Somali pirates -- again

The reports about pirates from the East African country of Somalia attacking and demanding ransoms from ships in the Indian Ocean seemed to have dropped out of the news recently. But attacks have continued, with dangerous and outrageous incidents. Now there has been another noteworthy one.

Pirates operating in speed boats 350 miles off the African coast have attacked the big Mersk Alabama ship -- again. It was hit just last April. But this time, armed defenders on board the ship were effective in fending off the attackers, avoiding ransom payment.

But with the Indian Ocean a huge expanse of thousands of miles, and with pirates venturing far off shore, it is hard to police and defend such a huge expanse.
