Hazel Alig

Hazel Lorraine Whitmire Alig, 75, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at her home in Dallas, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Daisy and Ralph Whitmire Sr.; brothers, Billy Joe, Elvin and Lee Whitmire; daughters, Susan Maynard and Sarah Allen.

Survivors include her daughter, Diane Ward and son, Albert Earl Stamps, both of Texas; sisters, Louise Grayson and Peggy Sims; brothers, Kenneth Whitmire, Fred Whitmire and Ralph Whitmire Jr.; eight grandchildren, Robert Andrews, Cathy Andrews, Andy Andrews, Casey Andrew, Crit Stamps, Linda Stamps, Wendy Andrew and Sarai Ward; 21 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are 3 p.m. Friday at Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel with Pastor Thomas officiating.

Entombment will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Nancy Arnold

Nancy Coleman Arnold, 90, of Chattanooga, died on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

She was a member of Stanley United Methodist Church. She retired from American Manufacturing Co.

Nancy was preceded in death by her two sons, Gaylen and Jerome; and her husband, Arventee Arnold.

She is survived by two siblings; her sister, Ruth Reese, Chattanooga; and her brother, Joseph Coleman, Washington D.C.; a dear nephew and niece, Llewellyn (Mary) Barrow, and Willie Mae Weaver, Chattanooga; dear family friends, Andrea L. Bacote, Bronx, N.Y., Roberta Edwards, Waynesboro, Va., Genett Morris and Margie Austin, of Chattanooga.

Services for Nancy will be noon Friday at Stanley United Methodist Church with Dr. Elston McLain officiating.

The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-noon at the church before the service.

Interment at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Pauline Vernuse Peeples Butler, 83, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.

Albert Carter

Albert Leon Carter, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, and will be deeply missed by his loving family.

He served honorably in the U.S. Navy beginning in 1944 and retiring after 30 years. He also worked at Baylor School for 23 years as Food Service Director and retired in 1993.

Survivors include his loving wife of 34 years, Catherine Carter; daughters, Jackie Malone, Cassandra Jullienne, Lisa Szczygiel; son, Ronald Edwin Carter; sister, Mary Furrow; brothers, Webb Carter and Chancy Carter; grandchildren, Christopher Carter, Jenny Carter, Albert Carter, Shatzie Szczygiel, Camille Jullienne, Sophie Jullienne and Max Jullienne; great-grandchildren, Autumn Carter and Jacob Carter.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

Audrey Coffman

Audrey L. Coffman, 79, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, surrounded by her family.

She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and friend.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Coffman Jr.; mother, Cora Mae Frisbee; father, Norman Patrick; and brother and sister-in-law, James and Gwen Patrick.

Survivors include her sister, Gwen Brooks, of Chattanooga; five children, Sandi (Ron) Seals, of Chattanooga, Susie Hicks, of Green Cove Springs, Fla., David Coffman, of Chattanooga, Darrell (Cathy) Coffman, of Harrison, and Steve Coffman, of Chattanooga; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

James Duncan

James Adrian Duncan, 20, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009.

Clyde Grant

Clyde Grant, 90 of Chattanooga, died on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009.

He was the son of the late Foster and Rebecca Hughes Grant. Clyde was the founder and co-owner Clyde’s Auto Glass and attended Brainerd United Methodist Church. He was a WWII Army veteran, serving as a Jump Master with the 508th Parachute Infantry and member of the American Legion. Clyde was an avid golfer and a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 67 years, Alnita Grant; son, Don (Jo) Grant, Lookout Mountain, Ga.; daughter, Joyce Payne, Atlanta; sister, Roxie Jones, Ringgold, Ga.; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors and Rev. Genevieve DeHoog will be officiating.

Brent Gunkel

Brent M. Gunkel, 89, of East Brainerd, formerly of California; passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Gunkel was a longtime resident of California and had been a resident of East Brainerd for the past three years. He was retired from Boeing International and was a WWII Army Veteran having served in Europe. He was an avid photographer, nature lover, and loved to travel and hike.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera Lou Gunkel; and son, Phillip Gunkel.

He is survived by his son, Stan Gunkel and wife, Dottie, Chattanooga; daughter, Rebecca Butler, San Diego, Calif.; four grandchildren, Julie Turner, Ooltewah; Tracy Chadwick, Jennifer Keller, Jon Gunkel, all of California; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. Friday at Heritage Funeral Home.

Interment will be at a later date at Rose Hills Memorial Park in California.

Davion Malichi Henry, 2 months infant, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, in a local hospital.

Crawl Sr. both of Chattanooga; godfather, Melvin Benford; grandmother, Denise Bishop, of Hedgesville, W.Va.; brothers, Marlon Crawl Jr., Devin Crawl, Marlon G. Lillie M. Ingram, 93, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, November 13, 2009, in a local healthcare facility.

Wolle Jones

Thompson Wolle Jones, 86, of Flat Rock, Ala., died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, after a brief illness.

A native of Chattanooga, he graduated from the McCallie School, and attended the Georgia Institute of Technology before serving as a navigator in the 351th Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force during WWII. He later returned to graduate from the University of Chattanooga and was retired from U.S. Pipe and Foundry Co. He was active in Ruritan National. He was also an avid gardener and naturalist.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, John Hardin Jones and Ruth Elizabeth Hallam Jones and by his siblings, Bettye J. Clinton and John H. Jones Jr.

He is survived by wife, Ann M. Jones; children, Edward H. (Karla) Jones, Lucia J. Beiler, Judith A. Jones and Benjamin G. (Nancy) Jones; and four grandchildren, Sadie-Anne, Rebekkah, Jared and Hannah.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. David Banks officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. today and from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Donald Kennedy, 57, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at his residence.

Larry Lockmiller Sr.

Larry Clifford Lockmiller Sr., 64 of Chattanooga, died on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009.

Larry was a member of Emanuel Praise Temple and employed with the UTC Police Department for 35 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Bedney and Clara Dockery Lockmiller; a sister, LaJean McCloud and three brothers, Jim, Bob and Arthur Lockmiller and Bill Anderson.

Survivors include his wife, Beulah Lockmiller; son, Larry Lockmiller Jr. and his fiancée, Lisa Jones, Chattanooga; daughter, Gretchen (Jason) Davis, Chattanooga; brothers, David Lockmiller, Chattanooga, Dan Lockmiller, Decatur, Tenn., and Earl Lockmiller, Athens, Tenn.; sisters, Barbara Juanita Wilson, Chattanooga and Johni Minnis, Decatur, Tenn.; grandchildren, Loren and Landon Lockmiller and Bradley and Lindey Davis, all of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.

Glenda Faye O’Dell, 63, Chattanooga, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at her residence.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and North Georgia. Mrs. O’Dell was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors are her daughter, Lori O’Dell, Chattanooga; mother, Rita Williams, Rossville; four grandchildren.

Tilda Thomas Oehmig, 83, died peacefully in her sleep at her Lookout Mountain home, Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009.

Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain with the Rev. Robert Childress and the Rev. H. King Oehmig officiating. The interment of the ashes will follow the service.

The family will receive friends from 3-3:30 p.m. today at the church. Following the services there will be a celebration of her life at her home.

McKenzie Danyale Price, 2, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2009, at her residence.

Hildred Pyle

Hildred Marshall Pyle, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, in a local hospital.

She attended Eastdale Baptist Church and had worked in the nursery there. Following her husband’s death Hildred went to school and then to work for Blue Cross doing data entry. She had been active in her neighborhood garden club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Rolla Pyle; and a daughter, Margaret Karen Hembree.

Survivors include her sister, Melva Pyle and niece, Leslie Ashton, both of Austin, Texas.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Waylon Stewart officiating.

Betty Smith

Betty Ruth Keeble Smith, 84, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009.

She was born in Rock Spring, Ga., to the late John R. and Lucy Latham Keeble. She retired from DuPont of Chattanooga after 28 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, James L. Smith; her siblings, Beatrice Bennett, Irene, Paul and Thurman Keeble.

She is survived by her daughter, Rita Dawn Smith; sister, Millie Geraldine Keeble Summers; granddaughter, Ritzie Goff; and great-grandson, Brandon Mitchell Dailey, all of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends today from 6-8 p.m. and Friday morning until the service.

Jeanette Stone

Jeanette Stone, one of God’s angels, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009. She passed away peacefully at her home with her two sisters, Martha and Agnes by her side. Jeanette was a joy and Blessing to all who knew her.

She attended Orange Grove Center for over 40 years.

Survivors include her sisters, Kathleen Conner, Mary Ann Schenk, Virginia Ragghianti, Martha Stone and Agnes Stone; extended family, Mary and Tee Armour; several nieces and nephews.

We will miss her, but hope to see her again. May her soul and the souls of all of the faithful departed rest in peace.

Tony Treppard

Carl Anthony “Tony” Treppard, 47, of Chattanooga, passed away in Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

Tony was born in Chattanooga Oct. 19, 1962, and graduated from Hixson High School in 1981. After graduation, he served four years in the United States Marine Corp and was wounded in the terrorist attack on Beirut Lebanon in 1983. He was a member of IBEW Local 175 and worked as an electrician/lineman for 20 years. He enjoyed sports such as sky-diving, white water rafting, and umpired fast pitch softball for a number of years.

Tony was preceded in death by his grandparents, Roy and Margaret Morris and John O. Treppard.

Survivors include his daughter, Jessica Marie; son, Matthew Charles; parents, Carl and Pat Treppard; brother, Michael, all from Chattanooga; sister and brother-in-law, Debra and John Gilluly, of Austin, Texas; nieces, Emma and Maggie Gilluly; nephews, Jake and Charlie Gilluly and James and Alex Treppard.

Funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Pastor Terry Evans officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

William Troope II

William Brown Troope II passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009.

Billy was born Dec. 17, 1958. Billy was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend. He loved fishing, golf and biking with a passion.

Billy attended Dalewood Elementary School and Stratford High in Nashville. Billy was a caddy for several years with The Golf Club of Tennessee which was like another family to him. He also caddied at Old National Golf Club of Florida in Naples, Fla., during winter months.

He also worked in construction with his brother in Chattanooga.

Some of Billy’s favorite stories were him playing golf at Pebble Beach Golf Club in California. Catching a bass and birding on the same hole at Kelly Plantation in Destin, Fla.

Biking with his brothers and nephews and creek fishing at a drop of a hat. Billy loved telling jokes. He was a true free spirit.

Billy was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Claud; his brother, Steve; and sister, Wanda and adopted parents, William and Louise Troope.

Billy is survived by mother, Emily Gibson and stepfather Jim Gibson; brothers, Larry and Brenda Claud, Dave (Cilla) Robinson, Kenneth (Cindy) Robinson and Randy and Paula Troope; several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Billy’s life will be held Friday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. CST at Springhill Funeral Home in Nashville.

Cedric Lebron Wood, 35, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, in a local hospital.

WINCHESTER — Gladys Ruth Farris Clark, 87, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2009.

Leon Grady Jr.

CLEVELAND — Lake Leon “Dickie” Grady, 75, passed away recently at his residence.

He was retired from Durken Spinning. He was a master electrician. He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served with the 101st Airborne. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lake Leon Grady Sr. and Mary Fletcher Grady; and a sister, Patricia Millsaps.

He is survived by his children, Connie Grady Coots and husband, Danny, of Chattanooga, Mickey Grady, of Nashville and Carl Lee Grady, of Cleveland; grandson, Chris Park, of Cleveland; great-granddaughter, Kelsie Mary Rain Park, of Cleveland; sister, Betty Parris, of Cleveland; mother and stepmother of his children, Mary Ann Grady; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors. The Rev. Sonny Ledford will officiate. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.

James Sharpe

DAYTON — James R. Sharpe, of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, with his beloved wife and son at his side.

He was born June 2, 1949 in Dayton, and lived in Texas for most of his adult life.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Quynh Sharpe, also of Houston; his son Jason Sharpe, of Austin, Texas; his parents, James M. and Betty Sharpe, brother, Steve Sharpe, and sister, Carmen Sharpe, all of Dayton. He also leaves behind numerous friends, whose lives he touched with his constant smile, laughter, and kind heart.

Jim served his country bravely in Vietnam as a member of the United States Army and as a military policeman. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at Cypress-Fairbanks Funeral Home, Houston Texas on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at 3 p.m.

Gretchen Smith

SPRING CITY — Gretchen B. Smith, 86, died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at her daughter’s home in Scottsboro, Ala.

Born in Spring City, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Elbert and Barbara Sheehan Barton. Gretchen was a graduate of the Spring City High School. She retired from TVA’s Kingston Steam Plant as a clerk. Gretchen was a lifelong member of Spring City United Methodist Church where she taught in the nursery for many years.

She was an avid football and basketball fan, especially the Lady Vols and U.T. football.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Denton “Prof” Smith; daughter, Pat Smith; sisters, Pearl Woodfin and Helen Douglas; and brothers, James, William, John and Harold Barton.

Survivors include her daughter, Terri (David) Gann, of Scottsboro, Ala.; sister, Doris Ann Cameron, of Spring City; grandchildren Scott Gann, of Troy, Ala. and Ashlie Gann, of Mobile, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Spring City United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Wyrick officiating.

Interment will follow in Spring City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday from noon to 2 p.m. at the church.

Geraldine Hamrick

FORT OGLETHORPE — Geraldine Benton Hamrick, 67, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009.

She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas and was of the Baptist faith. She had worked at the Walmart in LaFayette as a cashier for the last nine years and was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Sim and Fannie Mae Benton; her husband, Midge Hamrick; and two brothers, David and Ronnie Benton.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tony Honeycutt, of Ringgold, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmie Dewayne and Chris Waters, of Bloomington, Ill.; two brothers and sister-in-law, Jimmy and Linda Benton and Rick Benton, all of Harrison; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret and Bill Coleman, of Ringgold, Ga., Carolyn, and Mac Stoker, of Chickamauga, Ga., Sandy Croft Allen and (Wayne Posey), of Gulf Shores, Ala. and Phyllis (Eddie) Close, of Knoxville; five grandchildren, U.S. Army SPC Matthew (Karen) Honeycutt, Christopher Waters, Joey Waters, Bryce Honeycutt and Cameron Honeycutt; great-grandson, Wyatt Honeycutt; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel with Pastor Luther Eslinger officiating.

Burial will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Helen Bell

FORT PAYNE — Helen Frances Webster Bell passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, in Fort Payne, Ala.

She was born in Menlo, Ga., to the late Mr. and Mrs. John Lee Webster on March 25, 1917. Following graduation from Menlo High School, she attended Bob Jones University in Cleveland, Tenn., where Rev. Billy Graham was one of her classmates. She later graduated from Georgia State College for women in Milledgeville, Ga. She taught school at South Summerville Elementary School.

She married Robert Terry “Bob” Bell and moved to Gaylesville, Ala. They owned a cattle farm for many years. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing her roses with friends and neighbors.

Helen was a longtime member of Oak Bowery United Methodist Church in Gaylesville where she was active in the United Methodist Women. In 1994, she moved to Fort Payne First United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Terry Bell; her sister, Kathryn Webster; and her brother, Daniel Webster.

She is survived by her daughters, Ann Ledbetter and her husband, Stanley, of LaFayette, Ga., Betty Chesnut and her husband, Richard, of Huntsville, Ala.; and Ellen Limbaugh and her husband, Malley, of Childersburg, Ala. She is also survived by her sister, Carolyn Webster Shaw and her husband, Thomas, of Jackson, Ga.

She adores her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Lance Ledbetter and his wife, April, of Atlanta; Julia Ledbetter Edge and her children, Jonathan and Jacob, of Chickamauga, Ga.; Patrick Chesnut and his wife, Mandy and their children, Caroline, Patrick, Anna Louise and Ruth, of Athens, Ala.; Lauren Lowe, and her husband, Carl, of Huntsville, Ala.; Ryan Limbaugh and his wife Jamie and their children, Carson, Cody, and Adam, of Anniston, Ala.; Scott Limbaugh and his wife, Kate, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and Sloan Limbaugh, of Nashville; several nieces and nephews and many friends also survive.

Services will be held 3 p.m. CST Friday, Nov. 20, at the Perry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ryan Limbaugh officiating.

Interment will follow in Randle Cemetery, Gaylesville, Ala.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Ryan Limbaugh, Patrick Chesnut, Lance Ledbetter, Scott Limbaugh, Sloan Limbaugh and Danny Chesnut.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 until 3 p.m. Friday.

William Darnell Jr.

TREASURE ISLAND BEACH, Fla. — William Gordon Darnell Jr. passed away at home in Treasure Island Beach, on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009.

He was born Feb. 10, 1936 and graduated McCallie Preparatory School, 1954, in Chattanooga and UNC, Chapel Hill, N.C., 1958 and a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

Gordon was a commercial banker in Chattanooga, and Tampa, Fla.

He is survived by his son, William G. “Chip” Darnell; his daughter, Cone Darnell Skruck; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, family is requesting that any donations be made to the American Cancer Society in his honor.

Memorial service to be held in Murphy, N.C. at a later date.
