Chattanooga: UTC student enters no plea on hazing incident

by Monica Mercer

A UTC student entered no plea during her arraignment this morning on charges that she participated in violent hazing rituals last spring.

Seirra Smith, 22, is charged with two counts of simple assault. A Hamilton County Criminal Court judge assigned her a public defender since she said she could not afford to hire her own lawyer.

Ms. Smith is scheduled to appear in court again on Jan. 26.

The charges stem from an April 10 police report made by Jasmine Johnson and her mother, Karen Drake, accusing five members of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority of assaulting her.

No other charges have been filed against the other girls who allegedly were involved in three separate incidents off campus in which Ms. Johnson said the sorority members punched her in the head, chest and stomach, among other acts.
