UTC Mocs football in 'Bama den

Maybe it's easier for Chattanoogans to be optimistic about the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Moccasins football team early today -- rather than later.

That's because the Mocs, winners of six games and losers of four, go up this afternoon against the nation's No. 2-ranked team, the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, winner of 10 games and loser of none. And Bama has a Heisman Trophy candidate on its squad, running back Mark Ingram.

UTC Coach Russ Huesman and quarterback B.J. Coleman, formerly of the University of Tennessee, and their teammates are certainly going to have their hands full.

In pre-UTC years, back when the University of Chattanooga was an independent school before, during and after World War II, memorable UC Coach Scrappy Moore used to help fund his football season by matching the UC teams up against such as the University of Tennessee, the University of Mississippi, the University of Alabama and Auburn University -- all in the same season!

It sometimes was amazing that the Chattanooga players managed to stay close in the competition -- during the first half -- before depth and numbers wore them down.

And they beat UT once!

This year, the UTC-Alabama game will be broadcast by WDSI and 105.1 FM at 1 p.m. Saturday. Lots of local folks will be pulling for the locals.
