Seven local artists will exhibit in Hanover Gallery's annual "Local Color." The show opens Dec. 3 and includes porcelain vessels by Dana Terry, clay tiles by Fang Ling Lee, paintings by Skip Lyons, Katherine Tate, Jo Ann Bracey and Melissa Peirano and collage pieces by Susan Doubleday.
Known for her pastel landscapes, Ms. Doubleday has begun a new series using the process of collage. Her subject matter focuses on still life and birds.
"After taking a collage class, I have found a new way to use some old letters, stamps and papers that were accumulated by my family over the years," she said. "Also, it has been an extension of my painting to paint the papers that are used in the collages."
Ms. Peirano, owner of Hanover Gallery, will display new works from her Dress Series. The dresses are designs she has created or represent dresses that have personal or cultural significance to her.
"The paintings are acrylic and I've used a palette knife to build up layers of paint," she said. "I enjoy depicting dresses because, as a woman, so much of what we think of ourselves is reflected in the outfits we choose."
"Local Color," on view through December," will be part of the first Northshore Art Walk that showcases nine galleries. All of them are showing work by local artists, many of whom will be present to discuss or demonstrate their creative processes.
The event will take place on Thursday, Dec. 3 from 5-8 p.m. Other participating galleries are Winder Binder Gallery of Folk Art, My Color Image Boutique & Gallery, In-Town Gallery, Tangerinas, Plum Nelly Gallery, AVA, Bill Shores Frames & Gallery and Smart Furniture Studio.
Hanover Gallery, 111 Frazier Ave., is open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Saturday and by appointment. Call 648-0533.
