Crowd turns out in effort to save Cleveland GM dealer

by Brian Lazenby

Dozens of supporters and local and state officials are rallying this morning in Cleveland, Tenn., in a bid to save a General Motors dealership from closure.

Don Ledford Cadillac, Buick, GMC, Pontiac has been ordered closed by General Motors in a nationwide effort to improve the struggling automaker’s bottom line. But the Cleveland family that operates the dealership believes it can lobby to change GM’s decision by showing an outpouring of community support.

“We realize this is a nationwide problem, but to this community it is like a death in the family,” said Debbie Ledford Melton, general manager. “We are not mad at GM, just very disappointed.”

Other dealerships were spared from closing after a groundswell of public support, Ms. Ledford said. The Bradley County Commission has penned a letter of support to GM, she said.

The rally will continue until 6 p.m. today. Attendees are being asked to sign a petition.
