Crews blast at U.S. 64 rock slide site

Construction workers set off a series of explosive charges Monday morning near the site of the Nov. 10 rock slide on U.S. Highway 64 in Polk county.

Boulders, ranging between 3 and 15 feet in diameter, were released from the explosions, which occurred directly above where the rock slide happened, according to a Tennessee Department of Transportation news release.

Construction crews continued Monday assembling a 275-ton crawler crane, which will be used on the west side of the rock slide for scaling operations to begin this week, the release said.

Crews will have Thursday off for the holiday, but resume work Friday.
