Peggy Berry

Peggy Ann Berry passed away Friday, Nov. 20, 2009, at Erlanger Hospital.

She was of the Baptist faith and attended Charity Baptist Church and 1st Baptist Church of Gruetli-Laager.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Paul and Ruby Ann Berry; sister, Margaret Ann Berry.

She is survived by her brothers, Rocky Paul Berry and Billy Paul Berry; nephews, David Berry, Rocky Catchings; nieces, Angel Berry and Christy Berry.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 25, in the J. Avery Bryan Chapel with Dr. John Carter of Charity Baptist Church officiating.

Burial to follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Anna Deakins

Anna R. Graham Deakins, 86, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009.

Born in Jasper, Tenn., she was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in applied science from Tennessee Wesleyan College. Anna retired from 3M Corporation. She was a member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Robert “Bob” Deakins; a daughter, Linda Hogan; her parents, Oscar and Alice Swafford Graham; brother, George Graham; and sisters, Lucille Totty and Beatrice Graham.

She is survived by her brothers, Leonard (Tillie) Graham, Roy (Sue) Graham, Joe Billy (Ann) Graham and Reece (Betty) Graham; sister, Mildred (Paul) Greene; son-in-law, Bob Hogan; sisters-in-law, Mary Katherine Graham and Betty Deakins; faithful friend, Betty Harvey; several nieces and nephews and a caring neighbor, Odell Leinart.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 8 p.m. today and from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the North Chapel.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at National Cemetery with Dr. Daniel Sansbury and Dr. Joe Billy Graham officiating.

Fannie mae Deaton Dixon, 80, of Baltimore, died Monday, Nov. 23, 2009.

Eddie Knight

Eddie Knight, 84, departed this life Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, in Chattanooga.

He accepted Christ at an early age, first at Mount Olive AME Church, Fort Meyers, Fla. He was educated in the Lee County School System and was a graduate of Dunbar High School. He was a member of St. Paul AME Church in Chattanooga for 52 years, where he faithfully served as a member of the conference organization, president of the Laymen organization, vice-chair of the trustee board, class leader number four, and member tof the South Chattanooga Gateway Corporation. He was a 1949 graduate of Tuskegee Institute (University) where he met his wife of 60 years, Eloise Smith Knight; from this union, three children were born, Maurice, Phillis and Eric. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was preceded in death by parents, Will and Reanna Knight; sisters, Margurerite D. Robinson, Arsenia “Tight” Wilson and Helen L. Knight Agent.

He leaves to cherish his memory loving wife, Eloise, daughter, Phillis (Cornell) Williams, Houston Texas; sons, Maurice Knight, Memphis, and Eric Knight; grandchildren, Delane (Victoria) Torence, Calif., Thomas (Tammy) Eric Jr., Brian and Chris Knight, all of Memphis; great-grandchildren, Skyla and Jada, Torrence, Calif., and Miles Knight, Memphis; nephews, George (Patricia) and Cornell Agent, Fort Meyers, Fredrick (Carol), Anthony (Jackie) and Dwayne Smith; nieces, Margaretta and Linda Agent, Fort Meyers, Fla.; great-niece, Shuntale Smith Fairbanks; sisters-in-law, Gladys and Mary Smith; cousins, Florence Knowles, Carl Wise, Coutney Knowles, Jr., all of West Palm Beach, Fla., Eva Wise and family, Curtis (Patricia) Knowles, Cape Coral, Fla., Dorothy Lane, Staten Island, N.Y.; the Franklin family, Sanford, Fla., Annie Lee Sturne and Robert (Juliette) Sturne. Dorothy Mann

Dorothy “Dot” McConnell Mann, of Hixson, died on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, surrounded by family and friends.

Born on July 4, 1923, in Bluefield, Va., she was the youngest daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Enoch Luther McConnell.

Dot was preceded in death by her husband, William T. Mann; her parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors are her son, Eric T. Mann, and her sister, Elizabeth McConnell Morton, both of Hixson; a brother, Dr. Jack McConnell and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Hilton Head, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Dot was a faithful member of Hixson United Methodist Church and the McConnell Sunday School Class. She will be remembered best for her years of tireless service to older adults and shut-ins. She also belonged to Sam P. McConnell American Legion Auxiliary #159.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the McConnell Scholarship Fund of Hixson United Methodist Church, 5301 Old Hixson Pike, Hixson.

Visitation will be Sunday from 1 until 3 p.m. at Hixson United Methodist Church followed by a Celebration of Life Service. The Reverends Randy Martin and Paul Longmire, and the Rev. Dr. John Y. Bacon will officiate.

Rhonda Morgan

Rhonda Lynn Morgan, 23, of Ooltewah went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009.

She was member of Community Missionary Baptist Church in Apison, Tenn., where she taught children’s Sunday school and loved all of the children of the church.

She was engaged to be married to her fiancé, Jordan Wilson of Apison.

She was preceded in death by her grandmothers, Sandra Harris and Betty Morgan; great-grandmothers, Hazel Harris and Jean Carter.

She is survived by her mother, Kim Harris; stepfather, Marvin L. Barbee; father, Ronald E. Morgan; brothers, Rodney and Charlie Morgan, Chad Shadden; stepbrother, Nathan Barbee; sister, Ashley Morgan; stepsister, Carrie Wilson; aunts, Letitia Curtis and Sarah Harris; uncle, Ricky Morgan; very special extended family, Larry and Deana Wilson; Rachel, Will and Landon Rivera; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at 1 p.m. in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Fletcher Farris officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Beulah Munger

Beulah Lee Munger left to be with the Lord Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009.

She was a resident of Chattanooga and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by loving husband, Herman “Bill”; and two daughters, Carolyn “Diane” Tucker and Phillis Swearingen.

She leaves to cherish her memories, adoring son, Harold “Denny” (Shirley) Munger; sisters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Beulah was buried Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Garry Lamar “J.P.” Paul, 58, of Chattanooga, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Sunday morning, Nov. 22, 2009.

Jeanette Eileen Rose, 90, of Chattanooga, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, at a local nursing home.

Mrs. Rose was born and raised in Peoria, Ill., and was a retired sales associate for K-Mart.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Rose Jr.; granddaughter, Katie Rose; parents, Otis and Minnie Shaw; and brother, George Zimmer.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Mark Lewis; sisters, Bea Hoard, Edna Symons; parents, Charlie L. and Myrtle L. Campbell Lewis; first husband, Fred K. Weaver; and second husband, Jack M. Winkles.

He was a retired Warrant Officer in the U.S. Air Force.

RISING FAWN — Faye Broyles, 63, passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009.

Survivors include her husband, Alvin Broyles; sons, Randy Lee Hawkins and Donald Edward Vaughn; brother, Tommy Hawkins; sisters, Annette Vaughn and Janice Melia; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Willis James

SUMMERVILLE — Willis Samuel James, former mayor of Summerville, and Chattooga County businessman, 96, passed away peacefully on Sunday Nov. 22, 2009, after a long illness.

Born in Cobb County on Oct. 17, 1913, Mr. James resided for most of his life in Chattooga County. His father, Cleland Columbus James moved to the area to establish the CCC Fish Hatchery in 1929. Willis James delivered fish all over the state of Georgia with his father. Mr. James graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with an engineering degree. His professional career included work in insurance and serving as manager of the Summerville Manufacturing Co. for many years. He later worked with Roman Chemical Co. Mr. James was a member and former Elder of Summerville Presbyterian Church, and was involved for many years with the Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. James was preceded in death by his parents, Cleland Columbus and Annie Lou James; his brothers, Herman, Edward and Albert; his first wife, Lola Beatty James; and their daughter, Martha Addie James Hagood.

He is survived by his wife, Rosemary James; three grandsons, Gregory, Robert, and Richard Hagood; their father, Dr. Felton Hagood; and several great-grandchildren along with an extended stepfamily.

Memorial services will be held at Earle Rainwater Funeral Home Wednesday, Nov. 25, with Dr. Paul Bayerl officiating, visitation at 2 p.m. and the service at 3 p.m.

Interment will follow in Summerville Cemetery.

Mel Klausing

RINGGOLD — Melvin Hubert “Mel” Klausing, 77, passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, in a local hospital.

He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and was retired from Combustion Engineering as a mechanical engineer. Mr. Klausing was a veteran of the US Marine Corps during the Korean War.

Survivors include his son, Daniel Klausing and his wife, Christi, of Roopville, Ga.; two granddaughters, Jessica and Julie Klausing; three sisters, Della Koester, of Lima, Ohio, Paulissa Klausing, of Whitehouse, Ohio, and Helen Rushing, of Nashville.

Private graveside services will be held on Wednesday.

Mary-Louise Sartain

Mary-Louise Hunt Sartain passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, in Chattanooga, at the age of 88.

Her daughter, Esther Hall “Bunny” Roberts preceded her death.

Mrs. Sartain is survived by her granddaughter, Donna C. Roberts; and great-grandson, Gabriel Roberts-Peres, of Fort Myers, Fla.; and “adopted” granddaughter, Deborah Mann, of Rossville.

Having lived most of her life in Rossville, she was an entrepreneur. Mrs. Sartain owned a hair salon, as well as rental property, along with her late husband, J.S. Sartain who passed in 1987. She was a longtime supporter of the American Heart Association, and member of Eastern Star. Mr. and Mrs. Sartain were members of Rossville First Baptist Church.

There will be an informal memorial gathering on Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at 3 p.m. at John Ross Home in Rossville.

FORT PAYNE — David Dwayne Akins, 48, passed away Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, at his residence.

Sarah Gatlin

VALLEY HEAD — Sarah Jean Gatlin, 81, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009.

Survivors: sons, Ronnie and Michael; grandchildren; great-grandson; sister, Thelma McKinney.

Funeral: 11 a.m. CST Wednesday at Burt Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial: Sulpher Springs Cemetery.

Kyler Herring

RAINSVILLE — Kyler Luke Herring, infant born and died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009.

Survivors include parents, Eric and Delayne Herring, of Rome, Ga.

Service was Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Rainsville Funeral Home Chapel.

Interment in Mountain View Memory Gardens.

James Price Sr.

BRYANT — James William Price Sr., on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009, entered into the glorious presence of the Lord whom he faithfully served from the days of his youth.

He was born June 5, 1918, in Wildwood, Ga., to Buddy and Bessie Presley Price. He departed this life surrounded by his beloved family members who treasured his “Abrahamic Covenant”, given to him by God as a very young man. His greatest love was for God, His Word, his church and his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Beatrice Weldon Price; and three sons, David Price, Jim Price and Tim “Buddy” Price, also one sister, Belle Winters.

He is survived by his present wife of 11 years, Willie Bea Price who resides in Bryant, Ala. He is also survived by five of his children, Beverly Gilmer (husband, Louis) of Bryant, Ala., Patricia Gehret (husband Larry) of Pasadena, Texas, Joan Aultman (husband, Roger) of Bryant, Anthony Price (wife, Debbie) of Philadelphia, Miss., and Melanie Cannon (husband, Tommy) of Decatur, Tenn.

He leaves a legacy of 17 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren who revere the godly heritage that he bequeathed them.

He was a military veteran of the 6th Calvary of Fort Oglethorpe. He was a member of Mountain View Church of God for over 64 years. He was an employee of Combustion Engineering for 37 years as a machinist. He was an official member of the Cherokee Tribe of Northeast Alabama. He leaves lifelong contributions to the community from being a charter member of the Bryant Ruritan Club, serving as a Boy Scout Master and other leadership capacities.

Funeral will be held at 3 p.m. EST today, Nov. 24, 2009, at Mountain View Church of God with Rev. Brad Bridges officiating.

Interment will be held in Mountain View Cemetery.

Visitation is from 1 to 3 p.m. today at Mountain View Church of God.

Arrangements are by Moore Funeral Home, Bryant, Ala.

Anna Meaney

DURHAM, N.C. — Anna Napier Oeltmann Meaney passed away Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009, in Hillsborough, N.C.

She was born March 18, 1920, on the Napier farm in northwest Georgia in the house built by her great-grandfather in 1836. During the Battle of Chickamauga, the home was used as a hospital and now has a historical marker. During her professional career, Ms. Meaney was a valued surgical nurse. She enjoyed many hobbies and handy crafts and was a self-taught artist who signed her paintings “Grandanna.”

Ms. Meaney is survived by her son, Thomas Napier Oeltmann; daughter, Frances Ward; three stepchildren, James A. Meaney, Joseph Meaney and Mary Ann Festa; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was a long time resident of Atlanta and a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Ladies’ Auxiliary.

A funeral Mass will take place Saturday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Chattanooga.

Interment will follow at Mt Olivet Cemetery also in Chattanooga.
