Georgia: Jan. 5 set for legislative special election

ATLANTA — Gov. Sonny Perdue has set a Jan. 5 special election for two vacant sets in the state Legislature.

The election will fill the unexpired terms of state Sen. Edward Tarver and state Rep. Hardie Davis Jr. Both are Democrats from the Augusta area.

Tarver left the Capitol to take over as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia. Davis has said he will seek Tarver's state Senate seat.

Secretary of State Karen Handel on Tuesday said the qualifying period for those interested in running to fill the vacancies will run from Dec. 2-4.
