Esther Cagle

Esther Jo Cagle, 81, lifelong resident of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, in a local hospital.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jimmy Cagle and several siblings.

Survivors include her daughters, Linda Rice, Jean Williams, Shirley Morris, Connie Morris, Judy Ridge and Brenda Johnson; brothers, Grady and Harry Crump; 19 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Chattanooga Memorial Park with the Rev. Ronnie Smith officiating.

Clara Harris

Clara Elizabeth Harris, 61, of Hixson, passed away Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at a local hospital.

She was a 1968 graduate of Hixson High School.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Dorothy Pearl Harris; grandparents, Lester and Ruth Patton, and Arthur and Mary Harris; special cousin, Carleen Oldaker, several aunts and cousins.

She is survived by her brother, Thomas “Eddie” Harris; half-brother, Garland Harris, of Va.; half-sister, Linda Fletcher, of Ill.; aunts, Mary Blancett, Margaret Burrows, Thelma Patton; uncle, Bill Burrows, several cousins and a host of friends.

Funeral service will be noon Monday in the funeral home chapel with Minister Jerry Clements officiating.

Interment will follow the service at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Marvin Thompson, Lebron Patton, Randy Skates, Hayes Beard, Kavin Snider, Travis Snider, and Josh Patton serving as pallbearers.

Family will receive friends from 12-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service Monday.

The family would like to thank Clara’s doctors and nurses on the third floor at Erlanger Hospital. They also would like to express their appreciation to her cousin, Deb Rogers for all that she has done for Clara since she began dialysis. The Dialysis Center on Hamill Rd. has been great in the care and kindness they have shown Clara during the 12 years she has been a patient there. They would also like to thank Hospice for their care and support.

Dot Harvey

Dorothy L. Harvey, 82, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, at her residence.

Mrs. Harvey was born in Johnson City, Tenn. She was a longtime member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was a devoted homemaker whose hobbies included tennis, golf, and bridge. She was an avid bridge player and a longtime member of the Tuesday Morning Bridge Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Harvey; and grandson, Chase Skubiz.

Survivors include her children, Sara (Kenneth) Michaels, of Rocky Face, Ga., Christina (John) Skubiz, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., and Jeff (Katie Linderman) Harvey, of Ooltewah; grandchildren, Wes Michaels, Ashley (Sy) Martin, and Anna and Zachary Skubiz; great-grandson, John Martin; and very special brother-in-law, Jim Harvey.

Gordon Horn

Gordon McCoy Horn, 66, of East Ridge, passed away Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was born March 22, 1943, in Talladega, Ala. to the late Gerdon and Mary Frances Horn.

He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the United States Army.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Patricia “Pat” Horn; son and daughter-in-law, James and Melody Horn; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Clyde Moses; daughter, Sharon Horn; grandchildren, Jessica, April, and Christian Horn and Sean, Devin and Cody Moses, all of East Ridge; three sisters, and one brother also survive.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec, 1, 2009, at 1 p.m. in the East Chapel with Minister Richie Stone officiating.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dee Hundley

Dee Hundley, 81, died peacefully at a local hospital on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 26, 2009, with her family by her side.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga. On December 8th, she would have been married 63 years to Raymond Hundley. She and her husband operated Rickey’s Restaurant for 50 years, where her warmth, friendliness, beautiful smile and wit made everyone feel welcomed and at home. She and Raymond retired in 1990 and since have spent their days living downtown on the river. They enjoyed their wonderful, caring friends of the Shriner’s Red Fez Club. Actually, Dee and Raymond enjoyed doing everything life had to offer as long as they were doing it together. She was a wonderful woman, friend and mother and will be deeply missed by many. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Hundley; daughter, former Hamilton County Commissioner, Brenda (Tag) Bailey; daughter, former designer model, Sharon (Neil) Sobel; sister, Katherine Johnson; one grandson; one great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel with the Rev. Billy Dean and the Rev. Jim Watkins officiating.

Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.

Geraldine Lawson

Margaret Geraldine (Gerry) Toomey Engle Lawson “Mimi”, born March 14, 1935, went to be with the Lord on Thursday evening, Nov. 26, 2009, at her daughter’s home with family at her side.

Preceeded in death by husbands, John David Engle Sr. and Albert L. Lawson; parents, Henry Clay and Della Toomey; and brother, A.E. “Athol” Toomey.

Gerry graduated from Tyner High School in Chattanooga and Carson Newman College in Jefferson City. She worked in the mobile home business, Sertoma Learning Center and H.T. Hackney. After traveling with Al “Peanut” Lawson for several years, they settled in Beverly Hills, Fla. where she was an officer in the Elks Lodge Does Drove #232. Gerry was of the Baptist faith. She loved people and spent many years caring for others and staying in contact with friends.

Survived by son, David Engle and wife, Renee; daughter, Diane Payne King and husband, Mike; grandchildren, Lauren Payne Scarbro and husband, Jay, Jenna Engle, Jeremy Payne, Lauren Witt and husband, Scott, Carrie Witt and husband, Derek; great-grandchildren, Griffin Witt, Jackson Witt, Henry Witt, and Harrison Witt; sister, Leda Lawrence and husband, Richard, several nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the caregivers at Continuum Courtyards where she lived prior to her recent illness.

Bettye Jean Fields McDaris, 84, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Nov. 27, 2009.

She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Frances Fields; and husband, William L. (Bill) McDaris Jr. in March 2008.

She is survived by one son, Michael McDaris and wife, Linda, Ringgold, Ga.; three daughters, Sharon McDaris Lewis and husband, Tom, Chattanooga, Debbie McDaris Roberson and husband, K.C., St. Joseph, Tenn., Susan McDaris Durand and husband, Rick, Decatur, Tenn.; eleven grandchildren, Heather Lewis Carter, Katie Lewis Rutledge, Robert McDaris, Lisa McDaris Dalton, James Kilbourne, Lauren Durand Haun, Russell Durand, Rebecca Roberson, Christopher Roberson, Nicholas Roberson, and Catherine Roberson; and two great-grandchildren, Carter and Cannon Haun.

Alice Dobbs Melton, 81, of East Ridge, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, in Germantown, Tenn.

She was retired from the Electric Power Board as a supervisor after 38 years of service. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Alice was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Dobbs; her second husband, Jerry Melton; and a brother, Garlon Phillips.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Ingram and Diane Parker; two sons, Tom Dobbs and Mike Dobbs; ten grandchildren, Chris Dobbs, Veronica (Hank) Tansey, Jackie Ingram, Megan (Brad) Horne, Melanie Dobbs, Zachary (Jessica) Parker, Jason Dobbs, Ryan Dobbs, Jason Souther and Melissa Wilson; seven great-grandchildren, Braden Horne, Olivia Tansey, Emma Tansey, Mitchell Souther, Ashley Souther, Monica Souther and Geena Wilson; three sisters, Marie Musselman, Kitty Stokes and Rosalie Mullin.

Herbert Andrew Morris, 62, of Chattanooga, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009.

Efford Norris

Efford James Norris, 91, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009.

He was a 1938 graduate of City High School where he was an outstanding athlete in basketball, baseball and football. After high school, he played basketball for the Dixie Aces where he was a star performer. This later led to his induction into the Greater Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame. Efford served in the Naval Civil Service completing two tours of duty at Pearl Harbor. While stationed at Pearl Harbor, he assisted in the founding of the Honolulu Church of God. He then worked for DuPont, retiring with 30 years of service.

Efford was a member of East Chattanooga Church of God for over 70 years where he faithfully served as Councilman, Clerk, Sunday School teacher and choir member.

He was the most genuine Christian example of a husband, father, grandfather, and friend that one could ever know. Efford was loving and selfless to all of us. We will deeply miss him and look forward to seeing him again.

Efford was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Beckie Holcomb; parents Grover and Minnie Norris; one sister, Frances Holder; and five brothers, Millard, Wilburn, Richard, Edwin and Doyle Norris.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Bettie; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Philip Sharp; son-in-law, David Holcomb; grandchildren, Benjie Holcomb, Matthew (fiancée Jericka Cotter) Holcomb, Cathy (Jarrod) Smith and Jonathan (Ashlee) Sharp; great-grandchildren, Caitlyn and Keaton Smith; sister, Ruth Carroll; and brother, Owen Norris.

The family would like to publicly thank three very special ladies and their families for the special love and care they have given to Efford the last two years. Lois Scott, Pam Whigham and Tonya Grays, thank you for all you have done.

The Celebration of Life service will be held at 1 p.m. today at East Chattanooga Church of God with the Rev. Don Glenn officiating.

Lester Sharp

Lester “Les” G. Sharp, 89, of Hixson, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009, where he is now drumming in heaven.

Born in Ithaca, N.Y. and attended Cornell University. Les served our country during World War II in the training department of the United States Air Force. He retired from Combustion Engineering with over 30 years of service. Les was a member of Covenant Baptist Church and The Frog Sunday School Class. He sang in the choir and served as an usher. Les was an avid drummer and was a member of the Musician’s Union.

He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Carter Sharp.

Les is survived by his wife of 33 years, Lillie B. Sharp; children, Lester Evans Sharp and wife, Jean, Elaine Mason and husband, Jim, Gary Drake and wife, Rena and Wayne Drake and wife, Kathy; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Les will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Patty officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2:30-3 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at National Cemetery.

D’Angelo Marquis Vance, 32, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was a faithful member of Olivet Baptist Church where he was the Director of the Youth Choir, was a bus driver and sang in the Male Chorus. He also was a member of the Third Generation Gospel Singers and the Chattanooga Mass Choir.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Marion Williams; and father, James Bonner.

Maurice Wilson

Maurice Wilson, 93, a long-time resident of East Brainerd, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 26, 2009.

Maurice was educated in the Chattanooga School System and graduated from McKenzie Business College. He accepted Christ at an early age at Concord Baptist Church, where he faithfully served for many years and met his wife of 67 years, Mary Alice Howell.

Maurice served his country in the United States Army, attaining the rank of Major during World War II, and retired as manager of Wilson Certified Foods after 42 years of service.

His parents, A.J. and Lillie Mae Wilson; brother, A. C. Wilson; and sisters, Louise Norton and Velma Cowan preceded him in death.

Maurice’s impact of love, humor, and respect is felt by those who celebrate his life, especially his loving wife Mary Alice; daughters, Judy Ellington, Jean (Joe) Smallwood, and Maurine (David) Ward; sister, Barbara Dooley; brother, Herman Wilson; sister-in-law, Alice Wilson and brother-in-law, James Dooley; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Myrtle Roberson

PIKEVILLE — Myrtle Lee Roberson, “Miss Myrtle Lee”, 89, departed this life Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2009, at her home.

She was born in Pikeville to the late Virgil and Maude Walling Wheeler. She owned and operated R.D. Roberson Grocery Store for 47 years and continued in the grocery business until her retirement. She was a member of College Grove Church of Christ, on the board of Directors of First National Bank of Pikeville, a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Organization and Bledsoe County Senior Citizens.

“Miss Myrtle Lee” was preceded in death by her husband R.D. Roberson Jr.; sisters, Anna Belle Hale, Mary Farmer, Mamie Ruth Marsh and Katherine Hamilton; brothers Brainerd, Faith and Virgil Wheeler Jr. She is the last surviving sibling of the Virgil Wheeler Sr. family.

She is survived by a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, caregivers and friends.

She will be truly missed by everyone she knew and loved.

ROSSVILLE — Norma Rebecca Chambers, 85, passed away Wednesday evening, Nov. 25, 2009, at a local hospital.

She was born in Cleveland, Tenn. in 1924, and was a lifelong resident of Rossville where she was a member of South Rossville Baptist Church. She was a loving mother and a wonderful Mamaw. She was loved by all who knew her and will be truly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob A. Chambers; grandson, Todd Hull; and son-in-law, Danny Hull.

TRENTON — Wilma Meschino, 74, died Thursday evening, Nov. 26, 2009.

Mrs. Meschino was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Meschino.

Abelle Payne

RINGGOLD — Laura “Abelle” Payne, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at her home.

She was born September 21, 1923, in Plains, Ga., where she attended school with President Jimmy Carter. Mrs. Payne was a member of Ringgold United Methodist Church and the Seekers Sunday School Class. She spent a lifetime of dedication loving and caring for her family.

She was married to her best friend, John Payne, for 59 years before his death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Bertha Brock, all of Ringgold.

Survivors are six children, Harry (Mary Ann) Payne, Judy (Steve) McDaniel, Jerry (Debbie) Payne, Debbie (Bobby) Brown, all of Ringgold, Ga., Janet Dickerson, Chattanooga, and Terri (Ronnie) Queen, Ringgold, Ga.; sisters, Eula Mae West, Cave Springs, Ga., Ruby (Harrell) Presley and Clara Brewer, both of Ringgold, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two god-children, Dora Wilborn and Betsye Bishop, both of Ringgold, Ga.

Funeral services will be will be 2 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dan Payne and Pastor John Purrington officiating.

Interment in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Dr. James Rainwater

TRENTON — Dr. James Henry Rainwater, 78, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009.

He was a lifelong resident of the Tri-State area and a member of Berean Baptist Church, Trenton. He was employed by Siskin Steel for 11 years before being called to the Ministry. He was the Pastor of Robertsville Baptist Church, Mineral Park Baptist, Victory Baptist Temple, Ohio, and Berean Baptist Church, Fla. He was a professor at Covington Theological Seminary from 1981 to 1983 and Bethany Bible College and Seminary, Dothan, Ala.

He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Elbert and Estel Rainwater; and brother, Euel C. Rainwater.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Stella Rainwater; daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and George Cooper, of Rock Spring; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Pam Rainwater, of LaFayette; sister, Vera Duke; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Betty Rainwater, all of Ala.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. today, Nov. 28, 2009, all day Sunday and prior to the service Monday.

The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, in the funeral home chapel with Pastor James Jones officiating.

Interment will follow at Lakewood Memory Gardens-South, Rossville.

TRION — Donny Willingham, 56, died Nov. 25, 2009.

RAINSVILLE — Robert Thurston Wisner, 80, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009.
