Police probe death at Erlanger

Chattanooga police major crimes detectives are investigating Friday’s death of a patient at Erlanger hospital after he was stunned with a Taser when he resisted getting into a van, officials said.

Edward Buckner, 53, was taken to Erlanger hospital from Moccasin Bend Hospital on Tuesday after he developed dehydration from diabetes, according to police spokeswoman Lt. Kim Noorbergen.

Mr. Buckner underwent treatments and was discharged from Erlanger around noon Friday, Lt. Noorbergen said. Moccasin Bend sent a van and personnel to bring Mr. Buckner back to the facility, but he refused to get in the van and an altercation took place, she said.

Erlanger officers and Hamilton County corrections officers responded, and officers stunned Mr. Buckner with a Taser, Lt. Noorbergen said.

Mr. Buckner was then placed in the van and taken to Moccasin Bend, she said, and when they arrived at the facility he was unresponsive.

He was taken back to Erlanger, where he was pronounced dead, she said.

Hospital spokeswoman Pat Charles said the hospital is waiting for the investigation to be completed before commenting.

Mr. Buckner’s body has been taken to the Hamilton County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death, she said.

Chattanooga police major crimes detectives are continuing the investigation and are taking statements from Erlanger police and Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office corrections officers who were involved in the altercation, Lt. Noorbergen said.
