Robinson, Smith win Mr. Football titles

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Two of the four area players who were finalists for the TSSAA Mr. Football award were named winners Monday afternoon at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center.

Ooltewah defensive end Jacques Smith was named the Class AAA Mr. Football Lineman of the Year, and South Pittsburg quarterback Terrell Robinson won the Class A Mr. Football Back of the Year award.

Other area finalists were Baylor junior quarterback Jacob Huesman, who was up for Division II-AA Back of the Year, and South Pittsburg senior defensive end Jiajuan Fennell was one of three finalists for Class A Lineman of the Year.

Smith, a University of Tennessee commitment, became only the fourth local player to win the award in consecutive years. The 6-foot-3, 240-pounder had 57.5 tackles, 8.5 sacks and 23 tackles for loss this season and will graduate in December so he can enroll at Tennessee for the spring semester.

Robinson (6-3, 190) has guided the Pirates to the Class 1A state championship game, where they will play Union City Friday at 1 p.m. (Eastern) at Tennessee Tech University. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga commitment has thrown for 1,687 yards, rushed for 1,322 and has 46 total touchdowns.
