Two Sewanee students, one from Chattanooga, killed in crash

Two University of the South students have been killed in a morning accident in Franklin County, Tenn.

Kathleen Beach, 18, of Clarkesville, Tenn., and Kathryn Christianson, 19, of Chattanooga were killed when their vehicle pulled into the path of an 18-wheeler this morning about 7 a.m., said Lorna Croft, the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s administrative secretary.

The women were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

Two other passengers, Arden Jones, 18, of Greenville, Va., and Anna Sums, 18, also of Cookeville, were injured and flown by helicopter to Erlanger hospital, Ms. Croft said

The driver of the semi-truck, John Tucker, 52, of Kelso, Tenn., was also injured, she said.

The University of the South students were reportedly traveling east on Missouri Avenue in Sewanee, Tenn., when they crossed U.S. Highway 41 approaching Airport Road.

Mr. Tucker’s truck was traveling north on Highway 41 when the students’ vehicle crossed into his path and were struck, Ms. Croft said.
