UTC is in 7 finals in Baras tourney

It's a Seven-11 Sunday morning for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team.

The Lady Mocs have finalists in four of the seven singles brackets and three of the four doubles brackets of the biggest-ever Steve Baras Memorial tournament the UTC teams are hosting this weekend at the Champions Club.

Third-seeded Emily Hangstefer beat top-seeded Alena Sergeychick of Kennesaw State in the Mocs Flight (No. 2 level) semifinals Saturday, 6-0, 6-3, and plays in a 10:30 final this morning after joining freshman Jenna Nurik for the 8 a.m. final in the top doubles flight.

UTC's Shaina Singh plays in the No. 3-level Blue Flight singles final at 9 a.m., while freshman Jennifer Taylor from Notre Dame and Annie Green play in the Rivermont and North Shore flight finals. Green is in the Gold Flight doubles final with Brianna Wishing, and Charlotte Bossy and Jennemieke van der Veek are set for the Mocs Flight doubles title match.

The Lady Mocs had won 10 of 11 matches in the Friday schedule that ended at 1:22 a.m. Saturday. And third-seeded Nurik in the top flight, who won at Middle Tennessee's tournament last weekend, fell to the No. 2 seed in the semifinals Saturday.

"We had a really good first tournament last weekend," Lady Mocs coach Jeff Clark said, "and it was good for us to play again the following week. And we've played a lot of matches this weekend and happened to be fortunate to win some close ones, which gave us momentum. This is not only the biggest field we've had for the Baras tournament but a very deep field. It's fun to see the improvement in our team in the last year.

"I have to credit my girls for bringing a lot of enthusiasm both when they're playing their matches and when their teammates are playing. We have unbelievable support from within our team and their parents."

David Henry, Hangstefer's cousin from Signal Mountain who plays for Memphis, is in two men's finals. He's facing Carlos Valdenebro of Eastern Kentucky for the B2 singles championship and joining Jordan Smith in the A1 doubles final against another Memphis duo, Spencer Heflin and John Taylor, who beat the No. 1 seeds in the semifinals.

Junior Gordon Rudell is UTC's only men's player still alive. He edged Lee University's Tyler Wickman 7-5, 6-7(1), 1-0(3) to reach the D1 consolation final against UNC Greensboro's A.J. Clark.
