Elon senior wide receiver Terrell Hudgins became the most prolific receiver in NCAA Division I history last Saturday, a week after his junior quarterback, Scott Riddle, became the Southern Conference's all-time leader in passing yards and completions.

"They're both good players that have had special careers, and fortunately with Scott there's a lot more time and with Terrell I think he senses with each passing game (that) he's getting closer to the end," Elon coach Pete Lembo said during Tuesday's SoCon media teleconference. "They've been a big part of the progress we've made as a program, and hopefully they can continue to perform well here in more big games to come."

Hudgins set the career receptions record early in No. 11 Elon's 19-12 win at Furman, passing the previous mark of 316 set by Jacquay Nunnally of Florida A&M. By the time the game was over, Hudgins had distanced himself with a 16-reception performance.

The record now stands at 331 and the Phoenix have at least six games remaining. They host the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga on Oct. 24.

Riddle became the SoCon's passing yardage and completions leader in the Sept. 26 win over Georgia Southern. He now has 740 career completions and 8,267 passing yards, which are 46 and 443 more than the previous records.

Elon (4-1, 2-0) hosts The Citadel (2-2, 0-1) on Saturday in a matchup that will feature two of the best wideouts in the country. The Bulldogs' Andre Roberts is right behind Hudgins in the SoCon record books in nearly every major receiving category.

Hudgins, who has played one more game, leads the SoCon this season with an average of 11.8 catches and 150.0 receiving yards per game. Roberts, who has 239 career receptions, is averaging 7.8 catches for 79.2 yards. Both are candidates for the Walter Payton Award.

Smigelsky running

UTC linebacker Steven Smigelsky didn't practice Tuesday -- one week after having minor surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee -- but he did a lot of running and agility drills. He said the chances of him playing Saturday at Samford are about 50-50.

If Smigelsky can't play, starting strongside linebacker Ryan Consiglio will take Smigelsky's spot in the middle and Doug Faatiliga will start on the strongside, defensive coordinator Adam Fuller said.

Extra points

The Mocs' practice Tuesday was cut about 15 minutes short because of lightning in the area. ... UTC's 1979 SoCon championship team, which featured both coach Russ Huesman and offensive line coach Russ Ehrenfeld, will have a reunion on Oct. 31, when UTC hosts Western Carolina.
