Murphy, Baylor girls lead

Mary Alice Murphy owns a one-stroke lead among individuals and Baylor's girls totaled 153 and have the team lead after the first day of play in the Division II-AA state high school golf tournament at Old Fort in Murfreesboro. McCallie is in third place in the boys' team standings with a 304.

The tournament concludes today.

Tuesday's round was marred by drizzling rain and swirling winds, and there was a delay of about 45 minutes in the afternooon because of lightning. So Murphy's round of 73 came in less than ideal conditions, or were they?

"Mary Alice doesn't mind when the weather's nasty," GPS coach Ryan Kopet said. "She uses that to her advantage. It was really windy and a lot of girls were missing greens, just because they didn't know what clubs to hit. She just keeps her composure. She looks at it like 'It's just a little rain. It's not going to hurt.'"

Murphy said she's spent some time practicing in bad weather, figuring she'll eventually be in that situation. She incurred her only double-bogey midway through her second nine, then played the last four holes in 1 under par.

"I was just trying to hit fairways and greens, and fortunately I got enough putts to fall," Murphy said.

Murphy finished 12th in the state as a freshman and 11th as a sophomore. She was seventh last year.

"This is my senior year and I've been all about playing golf," Murphy said. "This time I've really practiced with a purpose."

Murphy leads Baylor's Kaleigh Toole by one shot and Battle Ground Academy's Ashley Powell by two. The Lady Red Raiders' lead is two strokes over BGA.

Boys' leader Taylor Davis shot a 70 for Brentwood Academy, which leads with a 293. The Eagles are 10 strokes ahead of second-place Memphis University School.

"We're 11 shots back, one shot out of second, and Ensworth is two shots behind us," McCallie coach Tony Meyers said. "I think it's really going to be a dogfight. You don't wish to hope that BA goes backward. You hope you can go out and win it. I think our guys can compete out there."

Patrick Clossin, who paced the Blue Tornado with a 73 and is tied for fifth, said his short game sparked his round. Playing the back side first, hole No. 4 was his 13th of the day, and he stood over a 2-foot putt there when play was stopped. He sank the birdie when play resumed, then parred in, including making a 20-yard chip after a wayward approach shot.

"We're excited and kind of disappointed at the same time," Clossin said of the team's mindset. "We'd rather come from behind than try to hold the lead, but we didn't play very well collectively as a team. I know I left a couple of shots out there."

Meyers thinks resiliency will be a key today.

"All in all, year in and year out, our guys have been good at grinding," he said. "I think we'll be able to do that, and we'll see what happens."
