'Magic' Johnson speaks at Normal Park

    Earvin "Magic" Johnson talks about looking up to Kareem Abdul-Jabar when he was a rookie during a talk to students at Normal Park Upper School on Thursday.

School assembly today at Normal Park was anything but normal.

It was magic.

NBA legend, businessman and philanthropist Earvin “Magic” Johnson, stopped by the magnet school’s Upper School to talk with the middle schoolers about staying in school and being successful.

The former L.A. Lakers star encouraged students to be involved in school, and to not let their circumstances get in the way of their life goals.

“I grew up poor, but I didn’t have poor dreams. I always wanted to be in the NBA and I wanted to be a businessman,” he said. “I saw those kids who were doing drugs and smoking cigarettes, but I went the other way.”
