Signal, Britt try for title

Playing in the state tournament at Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro is nothing new to Jordan Britt.

But this year, she'll be toting a red and black Signal Mountain bag instead of a blue and white one with GPS lettering on the side.

"I've been rooting for a bunch of teams this year," said Britt, a senior who transferred during the summer because of family obligations. "I've always wanted to win a team state championship."

She will have more opportunities to win individual tournaments before starting her college career, but those potential titles aren't shared.

"I really want a ring," Britt said. "It would be nice to graduate with a team state championship under my belt and a ring that I could wear forever."

She will be joined today and Wednesday by freshman Haley Davidson and sophomore Sarah Dolmovich. Based on region results from across the state, the Eagles have a chance.

They shot 156 at their regional. Milan shot 155 in the Region 7 tournament, and Greeneville shot 160 in the Region 1 event.

"I made a pretty tough schedule for the girls, and that was in preparation for the possibility that we'd play in this," said Signal Mountain coach Wes Moore, who has Blake Boerger playing as an individual in the boys' state.

"The thing with Jordan is that she's so worried about the team that she hasn't said one word about the possibility of an individual title. It's all about the team, and the others are getting confidence from that."

The Chattanooga area will be well represented this week at Old Fort due to reclassification that put some schools from the area in one region and others in another.

Signal Mountain won the girls' championship in Region 4 and Notre Dame won the boys' championship. The Irish were the only region champion with a sub-300 score. In Region 3, McMinn Central won the boys' competition and Polk County earned its first trip to state (boys or girls) with Lydia Triplett leading the Lady Wildcats.

The tournament field consists of 126 golfers, and 26 of them -- 22 percent -- are from Chattanooga-area schools.

The boys individuals include Boerger, Colin Osborne of Boyd-Buchanan, Joey Lottes of Sequoyah, Ramsey Kimbrough of Silverdale Baptist and Tyler Williams of McMinn Central.

The girls individuals are Maddie Everts of Notre Dame, Kelsey Weiner of Sequatchie County, Loren Pickett of Grundy County and Becca Kimberlin of McMinn Central.

While Britt and her teammates are at Old Fort to win, another area team is there to enjoy the experience and post a respectable score.

The McMinn Central boys had the highest region score (341) by 22 shots. The Chargers' best score in poor conditions at Chatata Valley was an 81 from Andrew Wilcox.

"Our first objective was to get here," coach Doug Armstrong said. "We've had years in the past where we shot 316 and didn't get here. We'll do our best and basically try to make the most of it."
