Edith Adkins
Edith Allen Adkins, 84, passed away Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, at NHC Healthcare.
She was retired from the Hamilton County school system after 33 years teaching at White Oak, Signal Mountain and Westview.
She was active in many patriotic and political organizations serving as the co-founder and president of The Chattanooga Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, president of the DAR and member of the Chief John Ross DAR Chapter; Chaired the Armed Forces Day Luncheon and Parades, was involved with the American Legion and Teacher sororities; member of Brainerd Presbyterian Church.
She was a dedicated loving wife, mother, teacher and friend, with a great love for God and Country.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joe P. Adkins.
She is survived by her son, James A. Adkins.
Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. today, Oct. 20, 2009, at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Ronald Ragon officiating.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.

Wilbur Elliott
Wilbur “Will” Lowery Elliott, 70, of Signal Mountain, lost his battle with cancer and went to be with our Lord and Savior on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009.
He was an active member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church and a loving husband, dad and friend to many. Mr. Elliott was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Early in his career he worked with WTVC Channel 9 helping them sign on the air in 1958. He worked for TVA and was Valley Wide President of the Engineers Association.
He was preceded in death by parents, Fred and Ruby Elliott; and his sister, Freda Ann North.
Survivors include his wife of almost 49 years, Jimmie B. Elliott; sons, Tim (Cheri) Elliott, of Ooltewah, and Phil (Rachel) Elliott, of Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Ragan, Drew, Evan and Celia Elliott; nieces, Renee (Darrell) McKaig, of East Ridge and Rhonda (John) Ward, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., one nephew, Rod (Lois) North, of East Ridge.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Steven Granger officiating.
Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jake Yoder, Kurt Hasley, Wayne Turner, Harold B. Penney, Vernon Cawlishaw and Jaime Stewart.
Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.

Anita S. Godfrey, 69, of Hixson, passed away Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, in a local healthcare facility.
She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and retired from Jones Printing with over 30 years of service. She was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include her daughter, Arwen Kyle, of Hixson; brother, Barry Smith, of Sale Creek; one grandson, Hunter; one granddaughter, Autumn; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday in Chattanooga Memorial Park with the Rev. Harold Buck officiating.
A Celebration of Life will immediately follow the service.

Raymond Haven Sr.
Raymond E. Haven Sr., 71, departed this life on Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009, in a local health care facility.
He started his family and career in Monterey, Calif., with wife Emillia Roscelli-Haven. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He was of Baptist faith and previous owner of many businesses in Monterey, Calif. and Chattanooga area.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie C. Haven; son, Richard Haven; and uncle, Herman Haven.
Raymond Haven was well known by all that knew him for his personality, quick wit, and love for life.
Survivors include father, Gerald (Lois) Haven, Chattanooga; brother, Bill (Lavonne) Haven, Pensacola, Fla.; children Raymond Jr. (Teal) Haven, of Ooltewah, Roderick Haven, Vanessa Haven, Sacramento, Calif., Robert Haven, of Georgia, and David Cunningham, of Indiana. He was also blessed with eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the Valley View Chapel with Father Gordon C. Temple officiating.
Burial will follow at Ooltewah Cemetery.

Nadia Horton
Nadia Robinson Horton, 79, left this life to be with her Lord on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009.
She was born in Chattanooga on March 26, 1930, and was a 1948 graduate of Central High School, where she was a senior class representative and voted most friendly. She loved being outdoors, where she enjoyed hiking and working in the garden.
She was a loving Christian wife, mother and grandmother and was a member of Red Bank Church of Christ. She will always be remembered for her precious smile, care and concern in encouraging others.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Grover Cleveland and Mary Eula Robinson.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Joseph F. Horton Jr.; two sons, Joey and his wife, Teresa, and Terry and his wife, Kaye, all of Chattanooga; two grandsons, Joseph and his wife, Lauren, of Winchester, Tenn., and Patrick, of Chattanooga; two sisters, Sybil Sentell and Maxine Wheeler, both of Chattanooga; one brother, Grover C. Robinson Jr. and wife, Mattie Lou, of Knoxville, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends 10:30-11:30 a.m. today at the North Chapel.
Services for Nadia will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at the North Chapel with Ministers Joseph Horton and Steve Lusk officiating.
Burial will follow in National Cemetery.

Jack A. Mitchell, 81, of East Ridge, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009.
Mr. Mitchell was born in Loudon, Tenn. He was a member and usher at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a graduate of Loudon High School. He was a retired electrician from Service Electric and a member of IBEW 175. He was also a member of the Alhambra Shrine and American Legion Post 95.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Nadine Mitchell; children, Ann (Mike) Craft, Jackie Mitchell and Ron Mitchell; and grandchildren, Josh (Stephanie) Craft and Lesley Ann Craft.

Rev. Jesse Nolan
Rev. Jesse C. Nolan, 81, of Hixson, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 19, 2009.
He was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga and a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II.
He was a retired Baptist Minister and was a pastor for 53 years in the Chattanooga, Cleveland and North Georgia areas. Rev. Nolan had pastored 10 churches most recently, Lakeway Baptist Church. He was currently a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He had a radio ministry for many years.
Jesse Nolan was preceded in death by his first wife, Billye Ruth Nolan; father, Walter L. Nolan; mother, Gertrude Stewart Nolan; brothers, Stewart Nolan, Taylor Nolan, Billy Nolan and Nathan Nolan.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna M. Nolan; sons, Larry D. (Beverly) Nolan and James A. (Allyson) Nolan; sisters, Juanita (Louie) McDaniel and Betty Lou (Joe) Murray; grandchildren, Bob (Jeanniee) Nolan, Evin (Jim) Norris and Jessica (Bert) Gann; six great-grandsons; stepsons, Phillip L. (Connie) Turner and David M. Turner; several nieces and nephews.

Frances Orr, 46, passed away Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, in Clewiston, Fla.

DUNLAP — Virginia Ruth Farley Allen, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at Grandview Medical Center in Jasper, Tenn.
She was born Feb. 20, 1922 in Bath, Maine.
Mrs. Allen lived both in Dunlap, Tenn., and Orlando, Fla., and was a dedicated member of Dunlap Seventh-day Adventist Church and supported many worthy causes including the Dunlap SDA Church School.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Allen.
Survivors include a daughter, Joy Hosseinian, Leesburg, Va., Gary Allen and Byrne Allen, Orlando, Fla.; a grandchild, Lecia Joy, Kihei, Hawaii, and numerous friends, particularity the McKeown’s.

The daughter of the late Dave and Liza Sebring, Mrs. Harris was a manager at K-Mart, Shoe Barn and Sue’s Snack Bar. She was a Baptist and loved to cook—especially pies.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Harris; brothers, Dave Sebring and Gordon Sebring; daughter, Jerusha Gail Harris; and infant grandson, Earl Frame.
She is survived daughter, Pat (Guy Allen) Frame of Bryant, Ala.; grandchildren, Billy (Meritta) Frame, of New Hope, Tenn., Karen Frame (Dewayne) McKee of Jasper, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, B.J. SOUTH PITTSBURG — Lavona H. Scissom, 91, formerly of South Pittsburg, died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2009.
The daughter of the late Joseph Bailey and Lou Ada Haynes, she was a member of First Baptist Church in Bridgeport and had worked for over 30 years as a nurse assistant at Tri-City Clinic and South Pittsburg Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude T. Scissom.
She is survived by five daughters, Bobbie (Dale) Blevins, of Clarksville, Tenn., Carolyn (Bob) Weseman, of Orange Park, Fla., Sandra (Alex) Bontemps, of Signal Mountain, Linda Jones, of Franklin, Tenn., and Betty (John) Coates, of Anderson, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Inez Fenney.
She will be remembered by many patients she cared for, for many years at Tri-City Hospital and South Pittsburg Hospital.
Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009 at 3 p.m. CDT with the Rev. Tedd Jones officiating.

Albert Winston Sr.
COLLINSVILLE — Albert Lynn Winston Sr., 84, of the Mt. Vernon Community died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009.
Mr. Winston was born July 9, 1925, son of the late Percy and Nettie Barker Winston. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during WW II.
He was retired from the Chattanooga Glass Co.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Giles Wilkie Winston; sons and daughters-in-law, Albert Lynn (Becky) Winston Jr., Paul L. (Carolyn) Winston Sr., Tommy L. (Joy) Wilkie and Randal (Peggy) Wilkie. Daughter and son-in-law, Ritha (John) Buckley; brothers, Paul Winston, Bo Winston, Marvin Winston and Ralph Winston; sister, Wanda Manion; grandchildren, Debbie Hayworth, Jeffrey Winston, Rene Kleinkaaf, David Winston, Paul Winston Jr. and Timothy Winston; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
