Fall FASHION

Big or small, fitted or loose, masculine or feminine — the choices in fashion trends this fall are diverse.

“The fall trends will appeal to most everyone’s taste,” said Suzanne Bishop, owner of Frankie & Julian’s boutique on Frazier Avenue. “The two main trends, menswear-inspired and feminine fashions, are polar opposites. However, they can be blended for a very cool look.”

Topping the must-haves list for fall for women are oversized jackets, mini dresses, statement jewelry and bold colors in cosmetics.

For men, it’s the classic look, said Bruce Baird, owner of Bruce Baird Co., on Broad Street. Suit trends for fall 2009 include double-breasted and three-piece, he said, noting that the latter is back after an absence of several decades.

Jewelry will make a statement, according to Sherry Gravitt, owner of Encore Consignment shop in Riverview. “You’re going to see big cuffs, chandelier earrings, jumbo jewels and lots of charms,” she said.

Casual fashions have been elevated to a new level, Ms. Bishop said, explaining that the look has been updated for work and an evening on the town.

Jeans, for example, are perfectly acceptable in many workplaces when worn with dressy boots or heels, a crisp blouse and blazer, she said. “It’s all about balancing the look.”
