Daniel Anderson Jr.
Daniel Wallace Anderson Jr., 77, of Hixson, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at a local hospital.
Mr. Anderson attended Baylor School and the University of Chattanooga.
He was a member of Hixson United Methodist Church. He was in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.
Mr. Anderson was a survivor of Pork Chop Hill and received the Commendation Medal.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel W. Anderson Sr. and Mildred Grammer Anderson.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Betty Parks Anderson; son, Dan W. Anderson III of Hixson, daughter, Amy Anderson Boyd of Hixson; two grandsons, Bret Anderson and Joshua Boyd both of Hixson; brother, Joe Anderson of Ringgold, GA; sisters, Madge A. Finney of Bradenton, FL, Dana Sue Rigsby of Dunlap, TN, and Paulette Manning of Valley Head, AL.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Heritage Chapel with Pastor Randy T. Martin officiating.
Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery with full Military Honors.

Stan Born
John Stanley “Stan” Born, 48, a lifelong resident of Signal Mountain, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, in Knoxville.
He was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church. Stan was an Eagle Scout, graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and worked 17 years for IEC.
He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley G. Born.
He is survived by his fiancé, Stephenie Crisp and her children, Ryan, Leslie and Haven; mother, Mickey Born; sisters, Debbie (Denny) Standifer and Sandra (Ray) Smith; nieces, Danielle and Corey Standifer; nephews, Brad, Cody and Wes Smith.

James Bryan
James Caswell Bryan passed away Sunday evening, Oct. 25, 2009, after a brief illness.
Born Dec. 14, 1913 he was 95 years young, a member of Bayside Baptist Church a former Navy Seabee and a retiree of General Motors. Jim was well known as a friend of many who never met a stranger. He thoroughly enjoyed being the oldest member of the Lawrence Welk Fan Club.
Jim was preceded to heaven by his first wife, Louise Minton Bryan.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Shirley Ann Bryan; and four stepdaughters, Lisa Jeffrey, Jill Sweet, Angela Fielden and Jennifer Jeffrey. Also surving him are his niece, Dot Hudson, nephew, Dale Gipson; niece, Betty Minton; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eric Stitts and Eric Dill officiating.

Gerald O. Grant, 65, of Chattanooga went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009.
He was a life long resident of the Chattanooga area and was a graduate of Soddy-Daisy High School, where he was a guitarist with the rock band, Demons. He was retired from DuPont and a member of Temple Baptist Church.
Gerald was an avid guitarist, and enjoyed his grandkids, whom he loved very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Lucille Grant; and a sister, Kathleen Lewis.
Survivors are his wife, Charlene Parker Grant; two daughters, Kristi (David) Davenport of Dunlap, and Marlo Steward of Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Grant, Hunter, and Taylor Davenport, and Ashton Steward; his brother, Wallace (Donna) Grant of Tellico, his brother-in-law, Willard Lewis of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Shad Smith officiating.

Croft; sisters-in-law, Sharon Croft and Donna Croft, all of Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

Marjorie Lorraine Lyle, 88, lifelong resident of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at her home.
She retired from Bell South, now AT&T, with almost 41 years of service. She was a member of St. Elmo United Methodist Church and a recent member of the “It’s A Wonderful Life” seniors group of First Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joe Lyle Sr. and mother, Sarah Stewart Lyle; and brother, Lt. Col. Joe Lyle Jr.
Marjorie is survived by her sister, Sarah Ellen Lyle Camp (Rev. Ken Camp); four nephews and two nieces; six great-nieces and great-nephews; five great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. She was cared for by her nephew, Andrew Camp, for the last two years of her life and briefly by Avalon Hospice.

Morton W. Rosenthal, 82, passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at a local healthcare facility.
He was a veteran of the Army Airforce in WW II, 32nd-degree Mason, Shriner, and a member of the Scottish Rite.

Elizabeth Sawyer
Elizabeth Chandler Sawyer, 97, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2009, at the home of her son, Ronald, in Chattanooga.
Born on Nov. 10, 1911, in Onancock, Va., Elizabeth was the daughter of Lillian Scott Chandler, seamstress and homemaker and Edward Chandler, merchant sea captain and Chesapeake Bay harbor pilot. At an early age, Elizabeth sailed with her family in a skipjack across the Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk. She remained a resident of Norfolk until age 94, when she moved to Tennessee to live with her son.
She was preceded in death by her son, Richard Paul Sawyer, of Chesapeake, Va.
Survivors include her son, Ronald; daughters-in-law, Marsha Sawyer, of Chesapeake, and Susan Sawyer, of Chattanooga; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She will always be remembered for her tenacity and ability to persevere through all of life's challenges with a quiet air of determination.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Elizabeth’s caregivers during the last four years of her life: Dr. Mary Bean, Erlanger North Family Medicine; Kathy, RN, and Teresa, CNA, ContinuCare; and the Hospice of Chattanooga team, especially Dr. Galina Rader, Dr. Ann Rybolt, Kim Sweeton, RN, Rachel and Michelle, CNAs, and Rachel, social worker.

Dr. Stewart Smith
Dr. Stewart P. Smith., 92, a beloved father, husband, and pediatrician for over 50 years in Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009.
Dr. Smith began his pediatrics practice in Chattanooga during the post-war baby boom, when making evening house calls, working in the office, and attending patients at the hospital were part of a routine day. He always enjoyed his work and his patients and considered himself fortunate to have a career and a profession that he loved. He said, “In 50 years, I never had a day that I did not look forward to going to the office.”
Dr. Smith loved his church, Grace Episcopal, where he served as senior warden, and for many years as lay reader, chalice bearer, and breakfast cook. He was also actively involved over several years with St. Nicholas School when it was a part of the church, and served on the Board of Directors.
Dr. Smith was born Oct. 3, 1917, in St. Louis, Mo., to Ruth Horne and William Franklin Smith. He attended Lookout Mountain Elementary School, McCallie School, and the University of Chattanooga. He completed his medical degree and his residency in pediatrics at Vanderbilt University. During World War II, he was a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps and served in the European theatre in a field hospital.
His parents and his brother, William Lowell Smith, predeceased him. His sister, Mary Catherine Taylor, formerly of Key West, Fla., now lives in Atlanta.
Dr. Smith is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Cheryl Ross Smith; children, Stewart (Cookie) Smith Jr., Evansville, Ind.; Phyllis (Paul) Berz, Memphis; Suzanne (Terry) Allen, Nashville; David (Sally) Smith, Chattanooga; and Ruth Ellen (Tom) McQuiston, Memphis; and stepchildren, John (Cathy) Ross, Lawrence, Kan., David (Sue) Ross, Cape Girardeau, Miss., Peggy (James) Denny, Aiken, S.C., Greg Ross, Chattanooga, and Chesley (Ray) Vohden, Lynchburg, Va. He was proud to be the grandfather of 12 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 20 Belvoir Ave., Chattanooga. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

WINCHESTER — Margaret Lillian Grant, 93, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009.
A native of Winchester, Tenn., she was the daughter of Moody and Ethel Cole. She was a loving mother and grandmother who will be remembered for her complete devotion to her children and grandchildren to whom she was always an inspiration.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hulin Grant; three brothers, Bill Cole, Jack Cole and Sidney Cole; two sisters, Martha Cole Way and Doris Baumgarten.
She is survived by a daughter, Margaret Dianne Grant, of Washington, D.C.; three sons, Wayne (Joyce) Grant and Danny (Lisa) Grant, of Chattanooga, and David Grant, of Winchester, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Steven and Scott Grant, of Chattanooga, Leslie Lamb, of Brentwood, Tenn., Valerie Grant, of Chattanooga, and Ryan Grant, of Huntsville, Ala.; one brother, James Cole of Ringgold, Ga.; one sister, Rebecca Ayers, of Winchester, Tenn.; six great-grandchildren; 10 grandnieces and nephews.
She was a member of Winchester First United Methodist Church and actively participated in Sunday school and related activities until prevented from doing so due to her failing health. She was recently blessed by loving family member caregivers.

Dennis McCurry
CLEVELAND — Dennis E. McCurry, 68, passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, in a Cleveland hospital.
He was an electrical engineer with TVA for 35 years. He also served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of North Cleveland Baptist Church. His hobbies included photography and working with stained glass.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glenn Robert McCurry and Daisie Pauline Carroll McCurry; brother, Glenn Haskell McCurry; and sister, Carolyn Delores McCurry.
He is survived by his wife, Deana Ricks McCurry, of Cleveland; children, Amy Byrd and husband, Albert of Jacksonville, Fla., and Jamie McCurry, of Chattanooga; grandchildren, Andrew William Byrd and Matthew Aaron Byrd, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Bernice Scribner of Galatin, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth Gerstman
TRENTON — Ruth Melbalee Alder Gerstman, 52, passed away Monday, Oct. 26, 2009.
She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Walter C. Alder; and a sister, Virginia Alder.
Ruth is survived by her husband, James Larry Gerstman; mother, Frankie McBee; her children, Katrina Gerstman, Melissa Messer, Stacy Pruitt, Amelia Gerstman, Lisa Williams, Tim Gerstman and Mitchell Gerstman; three brothers, James, George and Walter Alder; five sisters, Wilma Forth, Barbara Forsythe, Irene Cranford, Alisha Bennett and Brenda Williams; 13 grandchildren, Nicholas, Ashley, Summer, Amber, Dawson, Dylan, Zack, McKinley, Mason, Braylie, Nate, Laney, and Cameron; and one great-grandchild, Adam.
Funeral services will be conducted from the funeral home chapel Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 at 2 p.m. CDT with the Rev. Ron Moreland and Mike Manning officiating.
Interment will follow in Glover's Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. CDT today, Oct. 27, and from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. CDT Wednesday, October 28.

ROSSVILLE — Wanda Jean Lee, 69, passed away Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at her home.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

Gene Middleton
RINGGOLD — Gene Herschel Middleton, 65, passed away Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas and was a member of Covenant Baptist Church in Red Bank.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lola May Middleton; two brothers, Jimmy and Frank Middleton; and two sisters, Gladys Dyer and Louise Crowe.
Survivors include five children, Randy Middleton, Daryl Middleton, both of Rossville, Sandy Driver, of Fort Oglethorpe, Cheryl Middleton, of Rossville and Rita Middleton, of Birchwood, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Joseph Driver, Christopher Driver and Brandon Suarez; niece and caretaker, Donna Majors; sister-in-law, Brenda Middleton; nephews, Brian and Terry Middleton; and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009 in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel with Brother Doug Tate officiating.
Burial will be private.
The family will begin receiving friends after 4 p.m. today and prior to the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

FORT OGLETHORPE — Freda Scott Williams, 77, Fort Oglethorpe, died Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, in a local hospital.
She was a lifelong resident of Fort Oglethorpe and a member of New Manna Baptist Church. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Margie Rust Scott; husband, William C. Williams; brothers, Buddy Scott; sisters, Ethelene White and Tiny Garner.
Survivors are her son, Rev. Brion K. (Linda) Williams, Clarkesville, Ga.; daughter, Tamara (Phillip) Webb, Ringgold; brothers, James Scott and Donald Scott, both of Signal Mountain; sisters, Linda Vishmon and Shirley Pulliam, both of Signal Mountain, Betty Stocker, Kenansville, N.C.; grandchildren, Kayla Webb, Kelley Whitmire and Katelin Williams.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Brion K. Williams officiating.
Interment in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

She was a member of Harris Chapel Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Wooten; parents, Louis and Emmer McElhaney; daughters, Lois Cronnon and Ruth Bearden.
She is survived by four sons, Brady Wooten, Rossville, Bill (Linda) Wooten, Trenton, Don (Janice) Wooten, Trenton, Charlie (Sue) Wooten, Trenton; three daughters, Joyce (Larry) Haggard, Jasper, Tenn., Crickett Holtzclaw and the late Carl Holtzclaw, of Trenton, Sue (Rocky) Holcomb, Trenton; one sister, Betty Duncan, Live Oak, Fla.; 26 grandchildren; also several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. EDT Thursday at Harris Chapel Church with Rev. Eugene Lamb officiating.
Interment will be in Gib-Dock Cemetery.
The family will receive friends noon until 9 p.m. today and Wednesday.
