Stan Born

John Stanley “Stan” Born, 48, a lifelong resident of Signal Mountain, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, in Knoxville.

He was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church. Stan was an Eagle Scout, graduate of Eastern Kentucky University and worked 17 years for IEC.

He was preceded in death by his father, Stanley G. Born.

He is survived by his fiancé, Stephenie Crisp and her children, Ryan, Leslie and Haven; mother, Mickey Born; sisters, Debbie (Denny) Standifer and Sandra (Ray) Smith; nieces, Danielle and Corey Standifer; nephews, Brad, Cody and Wes Smith.

Services are 10 a.m. today in the Chapel of Devotion in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Dr. William Dudley officiating.

Lewis Brickell

Lewis Grant Brickell, Sgt, First Class, U.S. Army in Korea, presumed dead on Dec. 31, 1953, has been found, identified and reunited with his loved ones.

Lewis was born Oct. 12, 1931 to the late Aary and Vera Thomas Brickell in Chattanooga.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army, Aug. 15, 1949 to serve his country in the Korean War. Sgt. First Class Brickell was a member of Company D, 8th Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Calvary Division. He was listed as missing in action while in infantry near Kaeson, South Korea on Sept. 4, 1950 and was presumed dead on Dec. 31, 1953.

His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. Sgt. Brickell was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea war Service Medal.

After 59 years of waiting, due to the heroic and sacrificial services of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) and the JPAC’s Central Identification laboratory in Hawaii, our brother has been found.

He is survived by sister, Barbara Brickell Hobbs and husband, Joe; nephew, Lewis Hobbs; niece, Pamela Hobbs Burrows, all of Chattanooga.

Memorial services will be held Friday, Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m. in the chapel with Chaplain Patrick Brownell officiating. He will be laid to rest in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors.

Brenda Gatlin

Brenda Annette Gatlin, 57, of Lookout Valley, passed away Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at a local hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, was of the Baptist faith, and retired in 1999 from Duff Brothers as a compliance coordinator with 22 years of service. She was a member of the Cherokee Tribe of North East Alabama and her Cherokee name was Standing Deer. Her passions in life were her family, enjoying the outdoors camping and canoeing, as well as reading. Brenda was a loving and giving person who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Gatlin; mother, Marlene Little; and sister, Karen Walker.

Survivors include her husband of 42 years, Lebron “Butch” Gatlin, former Marine Sergeant and Vietnam Veteran; four children, Annette (Darian) Barnes, of Bryant, Ala., Eric Lebron Gatlin, of Hixson, Laura (Jerry) Leonard, of Rossville, and Rachel Lynn Gatlin, of Chattanooga; father, Ellis “Bill” Little, of Chickamauga, Ga.; two brothers, David Little and Gary Little, of Huntsville, Ala.; half sister, Linda Jo Little, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; mother-in-law, Eller Elizabeth “Betty” Ellis, of Fort Oglethorpe; eight grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.

Gerald Grant

Gerald O. Grant, 65, of Chattanooga, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009.

He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was a graduate of Soddy-Daisy High School, where he was a guitarist with the rock band, Demons. He was retired from DuPont and a member of Temple Baptist Church.

Gerald was an avid guitarist, and enjoyed his grandkids, whom he loved very much.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Lucille Grant; and a sister, Kathleen Lewis.

Survivors are his wife, Charlene Parker Grant; two daughters, Kristi (David) Davenport, of Dunlap, and Marlo Steward, of Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Grant, Hunter, and Taylor Davenport, and Ashton Steward; his brother, Wallace (Donna) Grant, of Tellico; his brother-in-law, Willard Lewis, of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 3 p.m. today, Oct. 28, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Shad Smith officiating.

Burial will be at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Sharon Lynnette Grizzard, 56, of East Ridge, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009, at her home.

Sharon was employed with BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee and was of the Baptist faith.

Vickie Lynn Hancock, 47, of Chattanooga, passed away from injuries received in an auto accident Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009.

She was a lifelong resident of the North Georgia-Chattanooga area. She was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving grandmother and mother that will be missed by her family. She enjoyed watching her Tennessee Football and NASCAR.

Her mother, Mary Louise Hanley precedes her in death.

Brandy Johnson, 22, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2009.

She was of the Church of God faith. She was preceded in death by her father, Benny Johnson; brother, Gary Johnson.

She is survived by her daughters, Jade Johnson, Alexus Gervais; mother, Carrie Johnson; stepfather, George Hensley; sister, Christie Johnson; stepsister, Pamela Bradshaw; stepbrother, Joey Hensley.

Sarah L. Kling, 81, of Chattanooga, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009.

Sarah was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church and Pacesetters Sunday School Class. She was retired from Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department. She served as a volunteer at her church and Ronald McDonald House.

Sarah was preceded in death by husband Reginald W. Kling, her parents and sister.

Survivors are son, Donald Kling; daughter, Laura Levin, seven grandchildren, Hilli and Aaron Levin, Reg, Paul, Alex, Greg and Stephanie Kling; great-grandaughter, Emily, and several nieces and nephews.

Tonita “Tootsie” Lindsay, 90, of Soddy-Daisy, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Soddy-Daisy Health Care.

She was a longtime resident of Hamilton County, and a member of Falling Water Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by parents, Richard and Ethel Lee Miller Roddy; several brothers and sisters.

Survivors: three children, Reba Morgan, of Hixson, Frieda Hendon, of Soddy-Daisy and Richard “Bo” Lindsay, of Dayton, Tenn.; one sister, Wanda Marler, of Graysville, Tenn.; two brothers, Agnew Roddy, of Forest Park, Ga., and Jennings Roddy, of Rockmart, Ga.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mary Ann Long, 70, of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at Parkridge Medical Center.

Tim Schneller

Timothy Jacob Schneller, 27, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Eugene Meyer; and paternal grandparents, Carl and Dorothy Schneller.

Tim attended Sunnyside and Barger Elementary Schools before graduating from East Ridge High School. He received his Bachelors Degree in Entrepreneurship and Marketing from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He also studied abroad in church-related missions at Avondale College in Australia.

He formerly owned and operated a lawn service company and was currently employed as an insurance agent with Liberty National.

He was a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church and was an avid cyclist and skateboarder. He loved to help people.

Survivors include his parents, Karl and Marilyn Schneller, of Chattanooga; maternal grandmother, Frances Meyer, of Ferdinand, Ind.; extended grandparents, Walter and Frances Pabis, of Allegan, Mich.; several aunts, uncles, cousins and his beloved English Bulldog, “Mac”.

Tom Sircy

Tom Sircy, 94, a longtime resident of Chattanooga and retiree from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, in a local hospital.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dean Sircy.

Dr. Stewart Smith

Dr. Stewart P. Smith, 92, a beloved father, husband, and pediatrician for over 50 years in Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009.

Dr. Smith began his pediatrics practice in Chattanooga during the post-war baby boom, when making evening house calls, working in the office, and attending patients at the hospital were part of a routine day. He always enjoyed his work and his patients and considered himself fortunate to have a career and a profession that he loved. He said, “In 50 years, I never had a day that I did not look forward to going to the office.”

Dr. Smith loved his church, Grace Episcopal, where he served as senior warden, and for many years as lay reader, chalice bearer, and breakfast cook. He was also actively involved over several years with St. Nicholas School when it was a part of the church, and served on the Board of Directors.

Dr. Smith was born Oct. 3, 1917, in St. Louis, Mo., to Ruth Horne and William Franklin Smith. He attended Lookout Mountain Elementary School, McCallie School, and the University of Chattanooga. He completed his medical degree and his residency in pediatrics at Vanderbilt University. During World War II, he was a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corps and served in the European theatre in a field hospital.

His parents and his brother, William Lowell Smith, predeceased him. His sister, Mary Catherine Taylor, formerly of Key West, Fla., now lives in Atlanta.

Dr. Smith is survived by his devoted wife of 36 years, Cheryl Ross Smith; children, Stewart (Cookie) Smith Jr., Evansville, Ind.; Phyllis (Paul) Berz, Memphis; Suzanne (Terry) Allen, Nashville; David (Sally) Smith, Chattanooga; and Ruth Ellen (Tom) McQuiston, Memphis; and stepchildren, John (Cathy) Ross, Lawrence, Kan., David (Sue) Ross, Cape Girardeau, Miss., Peggy (James) Denny, Aiken, S.C., Greg Ross, Chattanooga, and Chesley (Ray) Vohden, Lynchburg, Va. He was proud to be the grandfather of 12 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held today, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 20 Belvoir Ave., Chattanooga. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

Noveita Wilson

Noveita Trotter Wilson, of Chattanooga, died on Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, in a local hospital.

She was preceded in death by parents, E. Glen and Carolyn Pangle Trotter; brother-in-law, Doug Brown.

A lifelong resident of Chattanooga, Noveita was a graduate of Tyner High School, Tennessee Wesleyan College, and the University of Chattanooga, where she was a member of the Ladies Trio, played in the marching band, and was selected homecoming queen. She also served as Youth Director at First Methodist Church. While her husband, Jim, was in graduate school at Florida State University, Noveita served on the college staff as a secretary. During her husband’s time in the military in Atlanta, she worked at Rich’s Department Store. Noveita later began working as a model at Loveman’s Department Store, then became the Fashion Coordinator, serving for over 30 years. In 1984, she and Jane Isbell founded Noveita and Jane, Image and Fashion Consultants.

She also served as a volunteer at Ronald McDonald House for several years. She attended First Presbyterian Church for 25 years, and before that was a memer of Second Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir.

Noveita is survived by her husband of 55 years, James P. Wilson, of Chattanooga; and three children, J. Gregory Wilson and wife, Megan Wilson, of East Ridge, Karen Wilson Harper and husband, Don Harper, of Newbury Park, Calif., and Jennifer Wilson, of Knoxville, Tenn.; as well as three grandchildren, D.J. Harper and Nicholas Harper, of Newbury Park, Calif., and Gabriel Wilson, of East Ridge; two sisters, Jeannine Mitchell and husband, Damon Mitchell, of Hixson, and Nadien Brown, of Sevierville, Tenn.; two nieces, Connie Burlingham, of Sevierville, Tenn., and Sondra Coffey, of Cleveland, Tenn.; two nephews, Marty Brown, of Knoxville, and Eric Brown, of Sevierville, Tenn.

A celebration for the life of Noveita will be held Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Ben Haden officiating.

Solon Beach

PIKEVILLE — Solon L. Beach, 87, of Fall Creek Falls, passed away Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center in Cookeville, Tenn.

Solon was born Feb. 12, 1922, to the late Dewey and Minnie Walling Beach. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Avola Wheeler and Alova Binkley; and a brother, Arvil Beach.

Solon is survived by his sister Eva (Donald) Smith, of Pikeville; his first wife of 42 years, Joanna Grove Beach, of Fall Creek Falls, and their children, Delynn Kinnard, of Smithville, Marty (Emma) Beach, of Chattanooga, Ann (Dean) Lee, of Harrodsburg, Ky., and Jan (Wayne) Mitchell, of Sparta; grandchildren, Danny Cummings, Tracie (Keith) Ford, Kristy (Chad) Smith, Matt (Christy) Beach, Cason (Messina) Hayes, Julie (Doug) Smithhisler, Candice (Wes) Burtner, Cameron (Alicia) Mitchell, and 13 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his second wife of 22 years, Mary Standefer Beach, of Pikeville; stepchildren, Joel (Pam) Standefer, of Pikeville, Robby (Kim) Standefer, Brad (Reta) Standefer, of Chattanooga; stepgrandchildren, Shea, Lance, Seth, Jeremy, Tyler, Jake and Nick Standefer. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and good friends.

Mr. Beach was born in the Tip Top community of Bledsoe County and grew up in the hills of Fall Creek Falls. He was a beloved man and leader in his community. Solon was self employed most of his life as a logger, school bus driver, and established Beach Trucking Co. He loved and lived life to the fullest and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 2-7 p.m. today, Oct. 28, 2009, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. at Pikeville Funeral Home.

A family graveside service and burial will be at Walling Cemetery on Thursday, Oct. 29.

Frances Davis

DAYTON — Frances Willene “T” Davis, 76, of Dayton, and a longtime resident of Sale Creek, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at her home.

“T” was born Jan. 23, 1933 in Sale Creek to the late William Henry and Elsie Shipley Iles.

“T” was a member of North Dayton Church of God. She was a retired data processor for the I.R.S. and the U.S. Forestry Service and loved to play the piano.

She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Al Ray Davis; her son, Darrell McMillan, of Dayton; her daughter, Edwina Brown, of Dallas, Ga.; brothers Tom Iles and Marty Iles, both of Graysville, Tenn.; sisters, Mickey Bell, of Sale Creek and Bob Cassidy, of Graysville; granddaughter Kerri (Rick) Daniel, of Dallas, Ga.; grandsons, Jason (Cindy) Brown and James (Mardenin) McMillan, of Dayton; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and best friends, Charlotte Dotson, of Dayton and Dottie Hodge, of Sale Creek.

DECATUR — Billy J. Millsaps, 47, passed away on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at his residence.

Mary Britton

FORT OGLETHORPE — Mary Ruth Britton, 82, departed this life Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009.

She was born in Walker County, Ga., to the late William and Valley Keyes Cooper, and was preceded in death by her brother, Jerry Cooper.

Mary was a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Oglethorpe, and retired from Orange Grove Work Shop after 25 years of service as an Asst. Supervisor.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Gray, of Rossville, siblings, Frances Floyd, of Dalton, Charles Cooper, of Oglethorpe, Paul Cooper, Lebron Cooper, Toma Sain, all of LaFayette, Wanda Huey, of Rockspring; granddaughter, Alesa King; great-granddaughter, Kala King; special nieces, Jessie Paul, Peggy Holleman; many nieces and nephews; and special and devoted friend, Frances Kitchen.

Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel with the Rev. Joe Dodson, the Rev. Ken Putnam and Sister Jan Brantley officiating.

Interment will follow in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Family will receive friends after 4 p.m. Thursday and prior to the service Friday.

Clarence Fox

ROSSVILLE — Clarence L. Fox, 83, passed away Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, in a local hospital.

A native and lifelong resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia area, Mr. Fox was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army Air Force. He retired from Combustion Engineering with over 30 years of service. He was an avid golfer where he was a member of the Battlefield Golf and Country Club, and he also loved his garden that he grew every year.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Fox; and daughter, Susie Fox.

Survivors include his daughter, Vickie Fox, of Rossville; two brothers, Clyde Fox, of Soddy-Daisy and Donald Fox, of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

MARIETTA — Gladys Holt, 85, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009.

Mrs. Holt was born in Chattanooga. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Gideons Auxiliary.

Mrs. Holt is survived by her husband, Clyde W. Holt, of Marietta; two sons, Wes Holt Jr. and wife, Jan, of Vidalia, Ga., Elgin Holt and wife, Tonya, of Marietta; one brother, Henry Nite, of Del Ray Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Lori Holt, Heather Burke and husband, Matt, Justin Holt, Brianna Holt, Janessa Burge, Joshua Holt and wife, Rebekah, Joey Holt.

ROSSVILLE — James William Hughes, 80, passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at his home.

ROSSVILLE — Steven L. Rogers, 49, died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, in a local hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of North Georgia and a member of Rossville First Baptist Church. Mr. Rogers was a graduate of Rossville High School and was formerly employed with Walmart.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Rogers; brother, Curtis Rogers; sister, Lisa Rogers; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Cornett and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Rogers.

Survivors include an aunt, several cousins and friends.

Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park with the Rev. Bud Bell officiating.
