NASHVILLE — One potential 9th Senatorial District candidate took himself out of the running for the seat Thursday.
But another potential candidate said he continues to weigh a bid.
Rep. Eric Watson, R-Cleveland, said he was “honored” by supporters encouraging him to enter the contest to succeed Sen. Dewayne Bunch, R-Cleveland, but the lawmaker said he believes it is more important to seek re-election to the House seat he holds.
“We have made many steps forward for the 22nd District,” Rep. Watson said. “My work here is not complete.”
Rep. Kevin Brooks, R-Cleveland, meanwhile, said that after “receiving so many positive words of encouragement, I’m seriously considering running for the Senate.”
He said he is sounding out his constituents.
“They’re the ones who sent me here,” he said. “I need to make sure they’re the ones who want me to move forward. It’s not about me. It’s about service.”
Earlier this week, Sen. Bunch informed area House members that he would not seek a second term.
Rep. Mike Bell, R-Riceville, announced earlier this week that he is running in 2010 for the 9th District seat, and former Sen. Lou Patten, a Republican from Cleveland, said he is looking at running, as well.
The district includes Bradley, Polk, Meigs and McMinn counties.
