MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Records will show the second time Boyd-Buchanan and Red Bank each advanced to a TSSAA state volleyball final, the outcome came out right.
The Lady Bucs played in a title match for the first time last year. It's been 19 seasons since Red Bank played for its only previous title.
At Middle Tennessee State University on Friday, both programs earned their first championships.
Boyd-Buchanan beat Loretto 3-0 in the Class A final. The Lady Lions outlasted Page 3-1 in the Class AA championship match.
The Lady Bucs finished 20-0 in matches within their classification. Championship match most valuable player Stephanie Silvers, a 5-foot-7 senior, punctuated the season when she elevated high above the center of the net and drove the final point into the floor.
"Stephanie dominated that last ball," said junior and fellow outside hitter Rachel Harper, who along with Silvers terrorized to the opposition throughout the tournament.
Red Bank senior Courtney Lawson was selected MVP in its final. The Lady Lions' final point turned out to be a reproduction of something opposing teams have had to deal with all season -- Lawson setting junior outside hitter Kalyn Helton for a kill.
"I couldn't ask for anything better," Lawson said of winning the championship. "I didn't care how we got that last point, just as long as we got it."
