MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The Bucs stopped here, and that's right atop the TSSAA Class A volleyball world.
Boyd-Buchanan's Lady Bucs completed a sweep of the competition they faced in their classification in 2009 by defeating Loretto 3-0 in the state final Friday at Middle Tennessee State University.
With the championship, Boyd-Buchanan (39-10) completed a commanding run through its class. The Lady Bucs ended up 60-3 in games within its classification, losing one each in the regular season to Grace Academy and Arts & Sciences and one in the state tournament when they beat Loretto the first time.
"It just proves that a team can be on top without letting down," Boyd-Buchanan first-year coach Amber Nolen said. "We have the strongest offense in the 1A bracket. We're used to playing at a high level, and that's what we brought in here."
The first game of the final was so back-and-forth, neither team led by more than two points until the Lady Bucs went up 22-19. Even so, Loretto battled back and tied it before an ace and two kills -- the last by Stephanie Silvers -- secured it.
The pivotal point proved to be the start of the second game. Behind senior Erica Morris's serve, Boyd-Buchanan went out to a 6-0 lead that eventually grew to 16-5. Nolen said a defensive adjustment against the play of middle hitter Kinsley Williams proved to be a difference-maker.
"In the first game she was doing something different than she had been doing," Nolen said. "We know what she likes to do and we did a better job of getting on top of her in the second and third games. We really read her a lot better. She's a very smart player, but it's a problem when you only have one player to go to."
That's not the case for the Lady Bucs. Outside hitters Rachel Harper and Silvers were preeminent forces throughout the tournament, combining for 107 kills, 115 digs and 23 aces in four matches, and they had plenty of support.
Ashley Hixson's 62 digs were second only to Harper's 71 in the tournament and Maggie Brown equaled Silvers with 13 aces. Morris totaled 116 assists in three matches after freshman Jessica Kirk provided 16 in the opener.
"It was a great ending," said Silvers, who had the clinching kill. "We wanted it so bad. I think the whole way through we thought we had what it took."
