Paschall: Amazing Gators run still going

Considering this newspaper primarily has subscribers in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, it may not be the wisest thing to brag about the Florida Gators.

Yet their dominance since the Southeastern Conference split into divisions can't be overlooked. Try the following 1992-to-present quiz, and see how Florida works out as your answer:

1. Name the only program that has been to a bowl game every season.

2. Name the only program to have won seven SEC title games, more than doubling the next closest team (LSU has three titles).

3. Name the only program yet to finish a season under .500 in league play.

4. Name the only program to produce a Heisman Trophy winner (the Gators have two with Danny Wuerrfel and some guy named Tebow).

5. Name the only program to win three national championships.

6. Name the only program to lose Saturday to Charleston Southern and fall all the way out of the Top 25.

OK, so maybe that last one should have been edited out, but for SEC fans younger than 30, Florida is their Alabama. The only thing up for debate is the best coach of this generation.

Steve Spurrier once was the obvious answer, but Urban Meyer is making quite a run at it.

Pasquali's Pix:

South Carolina at N.C. State: Spurrier offered this last-minute support Wednesday for quarterback Stephen Garcia: "We think he's going to follow the plan, but he's got to go out and do it. He's an unknown." Wolfpack 24, Gamecocks 16.

Glenville State at UTC: Glenville State is boasting a lot less these days about Rich Rodriguez being a former coach. Mocs 27, Pioneers 17.

Western Kentucky at Tennessee: Pasquali is squarely aboard the Lane Train and plans to stay there for at least two weeks. Vols 41, Hilltoppers 9.

Jacksonville State at Georgia Tech: Please sit down, because this may come as a shock, but JSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux has been suspended for this game. Yellow Jackets 48, Gamecocks 13.

Georgia at Oklahoma State: Tons of preseason hype on top of players getting arrested on top of players getting hurt? The '09 Cowboys sure do have a good imitation of the '08 Bulldogs going. Upset special: Bulldogs 31, Cowboys 24.

Charleston Southern at Florida: The Gators will win again! They're unbelievable! Gators 70, Buccaneers 3.

Alabama vs. Virginia Tech: It's quite the challenge predicting this one before knowing whether renowned fishermen Julio Jones and Mark Ingram will be given the go-ahead by the NCAA. The pick here is that each will be cleared, the Tide will roll and they won't have to vacate this win in 2011. Tide 24, Hokies 13.

Miami at Florida State: Give the Seminoles a slight nod due to Miami having two new coordinators, but the Hurricanes could be developing a monster tandem at defensive tackle with Allen Bailey and Marcus Fortson. Seminoles 23, Hurricanes 20.

Got to give the Gators their due. If Meyer quit right now he would be high up in the running for coach of this generation. Who knows if come-up-pence of other programs will change that in years ahead. My prediction is he will be up there pretty high in the end and I am certainly no Gator fan. BAMA fans would love to see Saban give Urban a run for his money. The SEC might be better if Nick chooses to stay and try that. Me? I still yell for the guys in Orange! Go VOLS!
