Stimulus funds help Cleveland transit roll

NASHVILLE -- Gov. Phil Bredesen announced Thursday that eight small urban transit agencies in Tennessee, including Cleveland, will receive a total of $9.7 million in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The Cleveland Area Urban Transit System will receive $855,317 in stimulus funds. The system operates a fixed-route bus system within the city limits.

"Many Tennesseans, particularly those with limited mobility, already rely on public transportation for their daily needs, and many others would like to see expanded transit options," Gov. Bredesen said in a news release. "The Recovery Act funds announced today will help our small urban transit providers in Tennessee improve service and replace aging fleets with safer, more reliable vehicles."

The Cleveland system plans to use some of the money to replace two demand-response vehicles and three fixed-route and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant vehicles. It also will buy 13 ADA-compliant transit shelters and benches.

Also on the shopping list are GPS equipment to better locate calls for more efficient service, renovating the Cleveland Depot for use as a transit center and upgrading route-match software, the news release says.

Tennessee received $72 million in Recovery Act transit funds. Of that, $42.2 million was directed by the federal government to the state's four large urban areas, Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville.
