She was born in Forsyth County, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Frank Bowens; father, Paul Jerido Sr.; mother, Beatrice Jerido; and brother, Paul Jerido Jr.
Survivors include daughters, Sandra Cooper and Bernetta Bowens; grandchildren, LaNeeka Eldridge, Allen Cooper Jr., LaNeisa Eldridge, Gathen Anderson, Nathan Eldridge Jr. LaNaja Bowens and Niles Bowens; a host of friends.

Joy Gearhiser
Joy Edwards Gearhiser, of Chattanooga, died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family, Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Joy was born in Huntsville, Ala., in 1942, shortly before her parents moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn., where Joy was raised and educated. A lifelong Democrat, Joy was the first female president of the Chattanooga Young Democrats Club. She was also a former president of the Chattanooga Bar Auxiliary as well as a member of the League of Women Voters. Joy was instrumental in the furnishing and decoration of the building that was constructed to house the firm in which her husband was a founding partner, Gearhiser, Peters, Lockaby, Cavett and Elliott PLLC. She was a member of First Centenary United Methodist Church.
Joy celebrated her 67th birthday in April of this year with a party given in her honor at her home on Missionary Ridge by her family that was attended by dozens of her friends. Joy will always be remembered as a beautiful and elegant woman.
Those who knew Joy best will remember her as a kind and generous soul to animals, particularly dogs. For decades, Joy raised numerous homeless dogs, giving them a loving, safe and comfortable home. Joy was an avid gardener and a strong believer in protecting the environment. One of her greatest pleasures was taking trips to Yellowstone National Park where she would photograph animals and go snowmobiling.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Mary Edwards, of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and her sister, Beverly Edwards Steinlien, of Oak Ridge.
Joy is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Charles Josef Gearhiser as well as her devoted children, Charles Josef Gearhiser III, Signal Mountain, Laura Gearhiser, Knoxville and Christy Lee Gearhiser, Linden, Tenn.; grandchildren, Alexandra Josephine, Cooper Josef and Lochlain, all of Knoxville, Benjamin Wyatt Gearhiser, Signal Mountain; brother, Frederick Edwards, San Francisco, Calif.
Services will be held Monday, Sept. 21, at noon in the funeral home chapel.

Cleo Green
Cleo Atkins Green, 77, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009.
She was born Nov. 30, 1931 in Chattanooga. She retired from the Hamilton County School System after 25 years and was a faithful member of St. Elmo Missionary Baptist Church all her life and sang in the Sanctuary choir until her health began to fail.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Marshall Green; her grandmother, Louise Atkins who raised her; her mother, Nora Atkins Brock; father, Charlie Parks; stepfather, A.B. Brock; dear aunt, Cleo Bryant; brother, John Paul Williams; half-brothers, Joe Parks and Charles “Bo” Parks; and devoted friend, Elroy Scott.
She leaves to cherish her memory seven children; Linda Green, Beverly Green (Thaddeus) Casey, Barbara Green (Kevin) Pritchett, Nora Jean Green, Sandra Green (Frank) Smith, Danny Lebron Lebron (Tammy) Green and Albert Leon Lloyd. She is also survived by a dear brother, James C. (Katherine) Kelley, of Connecticut; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two nieces; one nephew; two half-sisters, Rosa Hamilton and Thelma Parks; a host of devoted family and friends.
Home going services will be Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at 2 p.m. at St. Elmo Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Billy E. Church officiating.
Interment in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Dorothy Montgomery
Dorothy Elizabeth Montgomery, 85, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, after a short illness.
She was born on Feb. 6, 1924 in Asheville, N.C. Dorothy was a 1943 graduate of Red Bank High School and received her BS degree from the University of Chattanooga in 1947. She was employed with Peerless Woolen Mills during her college years and played professional softball from 1945–1947 with the All American Girls Professional Ball League. Dorothy spent 1945 with the Belles of Racine and 1946 with the Muskegon Lassies. She was a member of the All American Player’s Association, and the Women’s Softball Hall of Fame. After hanging up her cleats, Dorothy became a Registered Cytologist for 28 years. She was a former teacher at Tennessee Vocational School and Laveran High School. Dorothy also was employed with Railway Express Agency, Erlanger Hospital and Combustion Engineering as a nurse. Retiring in 1992 she moved back to Chattanooga and enjoyed softball, bowling and motorcycles.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Thurmond Montgomery and Helen Lillian McDuffitt.
Dorothy is survived by numerous friends, Bettye Leonard, Billie Shook, Chris Everhart, Daisy Elsea, Mitch Killebrew, Patty Griffith, Joyce Young and Wilma, Tony Whittemore, Brenda Cross, Jackie Deer, Carolyn Odell and Inge Fraley.

Shirley A. Moore, 74, passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2009.
She was born in Chattanooga on Feb. 23, 1935.
Loving mother of Kimberly A. Moore, and Michael E. Moore. Proud grandmother of Megan Elizabeth, Michael Jr., Angela, Matthew and Demetrius, and dearest great-grandmother of Elise and soon to be great-grandmother of Morgan.
Shirley was a positive and passionate woman with a gregarious personality. She was a dear and devoted friend to many. Shirley graduated from Howard High School in Chattanooga, in 1953 and later attended Tennessee State University. Shirley retired from the Cook County Recorder of Deeds Office following 19 years of dedicated and superior service.
Funeral services will be today, Sept. 19, 2009, 10:30 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church located 49th and King Drive, Chicago, Ill.
Interment will be in Evergreen Park Cemetery 3401 W. 87th St., Evergreen Park, Ill.

Robert Powell
Robert “Bob” Powell, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, in a local healthcare facility.
He served in the Navy during WWII and was a retiree of Combustion Engineering. Mr. Powell was a Deacon and Elder of Red Bank Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Friendship Class.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry M. and Ada Pinion Powell; brothers, Howard W. Powell and H. M. Powell Jr.; and sister, Betty P. Dodd.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Fann Powell; son, Robert L. (Sheryl) Powell Jr.; daughter, Rhonda P. (Joel) Klein; grandson, Christopher (Erin) Harvey; granddaughters, Heather Campbell and Audrey C. (David) Griffin; two great-grandsons; brother, Charles C. (Joann) Powell; several nieces and nephews.

Ida Delena Evitt Rudkoff, 84, of Blairsville, Ga., formerly of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at her home following a brief illness.
Mrs. Rudkoff was born on March 2, 1925 in Sumter County, Ga., the daughter of the late Elmore Evitt and the late Monnie Sauls Evitt. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Rudkoff and a brother, William Elmer Evitt. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mrs. Rudkoff was a member of Simpson Memorial Methodist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Rudkoff are two daughters and one son-in-law, Beverly and James Bennett, of McCayesville, Ga., Dianne Walton, of Canton, Ga.; two grandchildren, Heather Watson, of Canton, Beth Ware, of Morganton, Ga.; two great-grandchildren, Angelle Watson and Bryce Ware; many other relatives and friends also survive.
A celebration of life service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, from Branan Lodge with Minister Terry Stuart officiating. Special music will be presented by Lewis Kell.

Rev. Lanny Blevins
ROSSVILLE — The Rev, Lanny Marcell Blevins, 66, went home to be with the Savior whom he had sung and preached about for several years on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009.
He was born in Durham, Ga., to the late Paul Jennings and Mattenai Autry Blevins. He was a former employee of Southwest Motor Freight Lines, Bevis Rope and most recently with Atcheson Foundry. He had been a choir director for several Baptist churches including Shiloh in Fairview, Ga., Bethlehem in Chickamauga, Ga., New Testament in Chattanooga, and most recently at Signal Hills in Chattanooga. He had enjoyed traveling and ministering in song to many organizations. He also had enjoyed playing softball for church teams.
Along with his parents, his brothers precede him in death, Garnet and Gary Blevins.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marjorie Irene Harmon Blevins, of Rossville; his son, Dean “Deano” Blevins and his adopted son, Jim Powell, of Rossville; sisters, Myrna Patterson, of St. Elmo, Arlene Blevins, of Rising Fawn, Ga.; brothers, Duane Blevins, of Summerville, Ga., Ronald and Dwight Blevins, both of Rising Fawn, Ga.; an aunt, Sarah Clark, of Trenton, Ga.; several nieces, nephews and beloved pets.

TRENTON — Sally Bell Holcomb, 90, died Friday morning, Sept. 18, 2009.
Mrs. Holcomb was a member of First Baptist Church of Trenton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Coy Holcomb; two sons, William Coy Holcomb and Paul Holcomb; two daughters, Frances Holcomb Langston and Betty Holcomb Castleberry.
Surviving are daughter, Patricia “Pat” Johnson White, Trenton; son, Bobby Holcomb, Beardstown, Ill.; also several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 4 p.m. Monday in the chapel with the Rev. Eddie Cantrell officiating.
Interment will be in Lake Hills Memorial Gardens.
Family will receive friends from 2 until 9 p.m. Sunday at Ryan Funeral Home, Trenton.
Bonnie Lowrance
TRION — Bonnie Mae Lowrance, 81, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009.
Survivors include children, Martha Camp, Richard Lowrance, Gary Lowrance; sisters, Martha Sims, Louise Brown, Sarah Hilburn; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral is 2 p.m. today, Sept. 19, at Mason Funeral Home.
Visitation is noon until 2 p.m. today.
Willie Neal Sr.
LaFAYETTE — Willie Neal Sr., 69, passed away Monday, Sept. 14, 2009.
Survivors are his daughter, Sandra Jackson.
Services: 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Cove Road Church of God.

Robert Settecase
CHICKAMAUGA — Robert A. “Bob” Settecase, 57, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, in a local hospital.
A native of the Chicago, Ill., area, he had moved to the Chattanooga area in 1989 and was the owner of Chattanooga Mobile Wash for the past 20 years.
Bob was preceded in death by his father, Philip Settecase; and brother, Greg Settecase.
Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Carol Settecase; mother, Alma Perisich Settecase; brother, Philip Settecase; sisters, Rita Kovar and Maryann Brunke; several nieces and nephews.

TRENTON — Lee Earl Turner 71, died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 16, 2009.
Mr. Turner was a plumber and was retired from Republic Parking as assistant manager. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Sammy and Kenneth Turner; and his mother, Hazel E. Turner.
Surviving is his wife of 49 years Dorothy Lee Turner, of Trenton: two daughters, Patricia and husband, David Helsel, Chattanooga, Sandra and husband, Lance Browne, of Rossville; two sons, Timothy and wife, Sherry Turner, Flat Rock, Ala., Johnathan and wife, Tonya Turner, Rising Fawn, Ga.; 10 grandchildren, Josh Minor, Keith McKaig, Tom Abbott, Lynnette Reeves Kenimer, Amber Turner, Dusty Turner, Billy Reeves, Dakota Turner, Cheyenne Turner, Shelby Turner; three sisters, Shirley Casey and Janice Fletcher, both of Selma, Ala., Gail Turner, San Diego, Calif.; brother, Robert Turner, Pikeville, Tenn.; also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Ryan Funeral Home with Brother Jim Lilly officiating.
Interment will be in Trenton Baptist Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from noon until 9 p.m. Sunday at Ryan Funeral Home.

SYLVANIA — Della Rogers Bates, 94, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009, at her residence.
Survivors two sons, J.W. Bates and wife, Dean, of LaFayette, Ga., Bill Bates and wife, Sally, of Chattanooga; one daughter, Merlene Harris and husband, Marvin, of Henagar, Ala.; one sister, Stella Smith, of Buford, Ga.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by husband, Bill Bates.
Funeral services will be held today, Sept. 19, 2009, at 1 p.m. CDT from Rainsville Funeral Home Chapel with Chaplain Damian Olson and Mr. Bill Bates officiating.
