Sections of several roads are closed now in Whitfield County due to flooding.

Claude Craig, deputy director of county emergency management services, said there have not been any major accidents so far in the drenched county.

The county school system will release students today beginning at 11 a.m. with elementary schools. Middle and high school students will be released at noon, said Mr. Craig.

He said the schools aren’t in danger of flooding, but officials want to make sure buses will be able to get students home safely.

“We feel it’s going to get worse before it gets better,” Mr. Craig said.

He said a couple trees fell across power lines in the Rocky Face area, damaging a transformer on Bonifacius Road.

He said crews are working to restore power to some residents in the area.

Mr. Craig advised citizens to stay home, if possible; flooding is occurring throughout the county.

“We’re not expecting it to let up any,” he said.

Road closures include in the Dalton area include:

* Antioch Road at Lakeland Road

* Reed Road at Reed pond

* Legion Drive

* Willowdale Road at Old Chattanooga Road

* Old Dixie Highway at the South Bypass

* Bear Creek Road

* Mill Creek Road

* Threadmill Road

* Dee Street

* Willowdale Street

So far, Murray County hasn’t seen any serious impacts from heavy rains.

Nona Shelton, terminal agency coordinator for the Murray County sheriff’s office said they’ve experienced some flooding in low-lying parts of the county, but she’s not heard of any road closures or any school closings.
