Vest, Cothran win rainy region golf tournament

Walker Valley senior golfer Hunter Vest and Soddy-Daisy junior Haley Contran were the Region 3-AAA medalists in miserable conditions Monday at Willowbrook Golf Club in Manchester.

Cothran will be advancing with her team to the state tournament next week at Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro, but Vest will be playing as an individual.

The Lady Trojans won the girls' team championship with Cothran shooting a 2-over-par 74 and Jessica Cathey contributing an 80, topping second-place Walker Valley by 15 strokes.

"The conditions were not fit for men or beasts," Soddy-Daisy coach Kevin Templeton said. "For Haley to shoot 40 on the front is good, but to shoot 34 on the back is stellar."

Vest won the boys' title by shooting a 3-under 69 while wearing a soaked bucket hat and a rain jacket and going through four golf gloves.

"I had a lot of 50-footers where I two-putted for par," Vest said, "and made a couple of 15-footers or so."

Cookeville won the boys' team competition with a 310. Warren County was second at 314, followed by Walker Valley at 319.

Joining Vest at the state tournament as individuals will be Brett Patterson of Warren County (70), McKeehanon Rue of McMinn County (73) and Zach Hester of Soddy-Daisy (77). Hester earned the final spot in a sudden-death playoff that lasted four holes.

Walker Valley sophomore Avery George and Cleveland's Kaleigh Barringer earned state spots with a 77 and a 78, and Cookeville teammates Katya Hoffman and Sarah Joe Dixon got in with 88s.
