Pink! gala receives philanthropy award
Memorial Health Care System Foundation was the recipient of the Judges Choice Award by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy Southeast Regional Cabinet at its inaugural AHP Southeast Best Practices Awards program. Pink!, the foundation's black-tie fundraiser, received the AHP recognition.
Memorial was one of two hospital foundations to receive an AHP Best Practices Award.
The prize recognizes outstanding healthcare fundraising programs that demonstrate innovation, creativity, and successful outcomes.
Two sleep centers earn accreditation
The Sleep Well Center at Parkridge East Hospital and the Parkridge Sleep Center have been approved and granted a five-year accreditation following independent inspections by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Parkridge Sleep Center is directed by Dr. Vincent Viscomi. The Sleep Well Center at Parkridge East is directed by Dr. Sibaji Shome.
Orthopaedic nurses earn certification
Two registered nurses from the Orthopaedic Department at Erlanger's Baroness campus received National Association of Orthopaedic Nurses certification recently.
Nicole Scott, RN, clinical education coordinator in orthopaedics, has six years experience working at Erlanger. Kathy Emerson, RN, BSN, certified in orthopaedics nursing since 1994, has worked at Erlanger for two years.
Ms. Scott earned the certification status by working as a registered nurse two years and receiving 1,000 hours of hands-on experience in orthopaedics. To maintain the certification status, Ms. Emerson completed 100 contact hours in five years, primarily in orthopaedics. One must also pass a comprehensive test.
Bredesen receives Friends' award
Friends of South Cumberland presented the Jim Prince Award to Gov. Phil Bredesen recently in recognition of his work and vision.
The Jim Prince Award honors the life and work of the late Jim Prince, who dedicated his land and life to conservation on the South Cumberland.
With the governor's leadership, nearly 5,500 acres in Fiery Gizzard and Savage Gulf have been protected, a cooperative effort led by the Land Trust, the Conservation Fund and the Friends of South Cumberland.
Heritage Club honors five donors
Board members for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cleveland, Tenn., honored five Heritage Club donors as founders of the clubs' new planned-giving program.
Honorees were Greg Hamilton, Matt Jenne, Bobby Greene, Richard Parkinson and Charles Sutton.
The Heritage Club is an association of friends of the Boys & Girls Club that ensure future needsare met by including Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland in their estate plans.

Erlanger earns national recognition
Erlanger Health System recently received national recognition from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association for performance measures in the treatment and discharge of heart and stroke patients.
Corley Roberts, director of Quality Improvement Initiatives for the Southeast affiliate of the American Heart Association, presented certificates from the "Get With The Guidelines" program to Erlanger's Southeast Regional Stroke Center for receiving the bronze and silver award for cardiac and vascular services.
Erlanger Southeast Regional Stroke Center is Southeast Tennessee's first and only accredited Primary Stroke Center. Erlanger earned the Gold Seal of Approval from The Joint Commission for Primary Stroke Centers.
UTCOMC promotes five on faculty
The University of Tennessee College of Medicine-Chattanooga recently announced promotions for five faculty members, according to Dr. David Seaberg, Dean of UTCOMC.
Dr. Richard Alvarez has been promoted to professor, orthopaedic surgery. Dr.
Marco Chavarria-Aguilar has been promoted from instructor to assistant professor, surgery. Dr. Stephen DePasquale has been promoted to associate professor, obstetrics and gynecology,
Dr. Mark Freeman has been promoted from instructor to clinical assistant professor, orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Joseph Kipikasa has been promoted to Associate Professor, OB/GYN.
The medical college also announces the addition of two physicians as full-time faculty members. Both have been practicing with University Surgical Associates.
"We are delighted to announce that Dr. Curt S. Koontz and Dr. Mark W. Fugate have joined our faculty as assistant professors of surgery," said Dr. R. Phillip Burns, chairman and professor of the Department of Surgery at UTCOMC.
Dr. Koontz specializes in pediatric surgical procedures. Dr. Fugate is a specialist in vascular surgery.
UTCOM-C, based at Erlanger, is one of three fully integrated campuses in the state that comprise the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.
Parkridge receives ACR accreditation
Parkridge Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in OB, gynecological, general and vascular ultrasound as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology.
The ACR awards accreditation to facilities for high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists.
Lowry to head up Spine Center
Spine Surgery Associates announces the appointment of David M. Lowry, DO, as medical director of the center, located at 1736 Gunbarrel Road.
He has been a partner for the last eight years at Spine Surgery Associates' Erlanger office.
Dr. Lowry is board-certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He earned his undergraduate degree in pre-medicine from Ohio University, and his medical degree from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
He completed his internship at Horizon Hospital in Farrell, Penn., and a residency with the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Siskin Hospital in 2001.
Phillips to lead nursing society
Erlanger oncology nurse, Jennifer Phillips, RN, OCN, will begin a one-year term as president of the Chattanooga chapter of Oncology Nursing Society in January.
She brings 13 years of experience working in the field. She has been employed at Erlanger and certified as an oncology nurse since 2007.
Ms. Phillips says her goals as president are to start a mentoring program for student nurses interested in oncology care and to build teamwork within the oncology community.
Sample named Bryan vice president
Dr. Bradford Sample has been named academic vice president of Bryan College, succeeding Dr. Cal White, who resigned earlier this year.
Dr. Sample comes to the Dayton, Tenn., college from Indiana Wesleyan University, where he has served for six years as director of liberal arts and electives, dean of the college of adult and professional studies, and historian and associate dean of the school of social and behavioral sciences and business.
He and wife Michelle have two children.
Apison student wins pageant
Greyson Repko, 6, a student at Apison Elementary, won the overall competition to be named Prince Charming 2010 at the International Cinderella Scholarship Pageant in Dallas, Texas.
He is the son of Tom and Toni Repko.
UTC Mortar Board chapter honored
UTC's Mortar Board chapter was one of 32 chapters to be honored for excellence with the Golden Torch Award at the Mortar Board National Conference. Chapter President Carlyn Saylors and Director of Communication Melody Dale were present to accept the award.
Mortar Board is an honor society for college seniors.
"Throughout the academic year, the chapter exhibited exceptional leadership, dedicated many hours to community service, participated in the national Reading is Leading literacy initiative and more," said Megan Stevens, interim executive director of Mortar Board. "The group truly serves as a strong example to other chapters."
GPS publication receives award
Girls Preparatory School was recognized with a Grand Gold Award by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education at its Summit for Advancement Leaders and at its marketing and publications conferences.
The GPS Admissions Backpack and Contents was one of 72 entries in the Student Recruitment Publications Packages competition of theCircle of Excellence program. Among entries from colleges, universities, independent elementary and secondary schools, GPS was the only school to receive the top grand gold medal.
Graphic Advertising Inc. in Rossville, worked with GPS in the design of the publication. The designer won an ADDY for best brochure at the Chattanooga Seventh District Awards. Starkey Printing won two awards for the Viewbook and DVD holder at the PIAS Awards for printing companies.
The GPS Admissions piece is a three-dimensional, blue backpack complete with pockets for a GPS DVD, magnetic calendar of admissions events, several mini-notebooks of information, and a black-and-white composition book that is the school's Viewbook.
