Bill Abbott
George William “Bill” Abbott, 68, of East Ridge, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009, in a local hospital.
He was a member of Calvary Memorial Baptist Church. Bill was retired from the U.S. Air Force and from Chattanooga State Community College as an HVAC instructor.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Abbott; stepson, David Stephenson and his wife, Cathy; grandson, Christopher Delabano, of Dallas, Texas; one brother, Lebron Madaris and his wife, Janice, of Ringgold, Ga.; several aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. David Thompson officiating.
Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2-6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Hubert Ammons
Hubert Lee Ammons, 83, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, in a local health care facility.
He was the son of the late Walker and Rosa Bell Ammons; and was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Lee Ammons; and two grandchildren.
He retired from the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of WWII.
He attended Rival Church of God in Apison.
Survivors include his three daughters, Evelyn Reynolds, Shirley Ann Lennox, both of The Villages, Fla., Eileen Owens, of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren; two brothers, Jimmy Ammons, of Lake City, Fla., Robert Lee Ammons; sister-in-law, Sadie Ammons, of Ooltewah; two nephews, David Hooper, of Ooltewah, Jerry Hooper, of Dalton, Ga.; two nieces, Rosa Marie and husband, Devin Clark, Meagan and husband, Aki Houser.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
Interment will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with military rites being conducted.

Raymond Hale Jr.
Raymond Franklin Hale Jr. went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009.
He was born in Halls, Tenn., on Jan. 27, 1929, to the late Pauline and Raymond Franklin Hale Sr.
Mr. Hale graduated from Halls High School in 1946 and entered Union University in the fall. In March of 1947, at the age of 18, he left school to buy a small grocery store which operated as Hale’s Grocery.
In September 1950 he entered Memphis State College and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
Mr. Hale married Mary Ann Ledford on June 22, 1952.
Through the Reserve Officers Training Corps, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Charleston, S.C., for two years.
In June 1956, he joined Fike Realty in Chattanooga, and in January 1958 he opened Hale Realty which included insurance, mortgages and building and development companies.
He has developed subdivisions that include Waverly Park, Poplar Springs, Morris Estates, Lakebrook, Ledford Acres and Plemons Estates. He built and managed Ledford Apartments for 20 years.
Mr. Hale was honored with the “Business Property Beautification Award” for his projects.
He has held offices in the Chattanooga Association of Realtors and served as president in 1968. The following year he was honored as “Realtor of the Year.”
He chaired the building committee for the Realtors office building on Amnicola Highway in the late 1970s.
The Tennessee Association of Realtors honored him as Tennessee “Realtor of the Year” in 1974 after serving as state president from July 1972-January 1974. He served as a TAR director and RPAC trustee. As chairman of the governmental affairs committee he led the Tennessee delegation to the Washington legislative meetings.
He served as a National Association of Realtors Director for several years and was elected to the honorary real estate fraternity Omega Tau Rho.
In 2005 he was honored by the National Association of Realtors as “Realtor Emeritus” for 40-plus years of service in the real estate industry. He was currently principal-broker of Hale Realty Co.
Clubs and boards he has been a member of include: Brainerd Kiwanis Club, director of Scenic Land School, president of Woodmore Elementary School PTA, board member of Bible in the Schools, chairman of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, Chattanooga Mechanical Codes Committee, Society of Real Estate Appraisers, Chattanooga Health and Education Board, Chattanooga Better Housing Commission, Half-Century Club, Alhambra Shrine Temple, the Scottish Rite, 32, and was a Master Mason, treasurer of the Hamilton County Baptist Association from 1960-1974, chairman of the Building Committee to relocate HCBA to North Chattanooga, Hamilton County Board of Appeals and was honored in September 2009 for 15 years of service.
He was ordained a deacon at Central Baptist Church, Woodmore. As an active member he chaired the finance committees and served on the building committees. The first “Newlywed” Sunday School Class was established by Raymond and his wife in the 1970s.
He was currently a member of Brainerd Baptist Church and the Friendship Class, which he and his wife organized. He served as treasurer and special projects chairman.
In 2008, with his wife, he co-authored an autobiography, “It’s A Long Way From Halls.”
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Lee Hale.
In addition to his wife, Ann, he is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Susan Chastain, Joan (David) Bunn, and Dianne (Mike) Gonzalez; grandchildren, Jennifer Chastain, Brad Chastain, Brandon Bunn, Tyler Bunn, Davis Bunn, Cameron Gonzalez and Alex Gonzalez.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at Brainerd Baptist Church with Dr. David Myers and the Rev. George Clark officiating.
Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
Active pallbearers will be Don Boyett, Vernon Cox, Glen Fleming, Bruce Gilpatrick, Elder Glen, Jamie Johnson, Elgin Smith and B.H. Yerbey.
The friendship Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Shirley Hutcheson, 77, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Friday, Sept. 25, 2009.
She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Shirley retired from Buster Brown Industries as a manager and was a member of the Daisy Eastern Star #328.
She is survived by her husband, William S. Hutcheson; son, William R. Hutcheson; brothers, Donald and Bobby Newby; grandsons, Chris and Sean Hutcheson; granddaughter, Amber Holbert; great-grandson, Jordan Holbert; and a great-granddaughter, Madeline Holbert.

Avis Koelle
Avis Elaine Koelle, 82, of Morris, Ill., passed away Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, at Morris Community Hospital.
Avis was born June 9, 1927, to Emma and Henry Solomon in Burbank, S.D., where she spent her childhood. As a young woman Avis spent many years living in Denver, Colo., were she was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission. She then moved to Des Moines, Iowa; where she met and married Wayne G. Koelle in March of 1958. They settled in Des Moines and raised a family. In 1983, Avis relocated to Chattanooga with her husband and now grown children. She remained in Chattanooga doing secretarial work until her retirement in 2005, at which time she moved to Morris, Ill. Avis had many job titles in her life time from bartender to secretary. Her most important however, was the job of Mother and Grandmother to her children and grandchildren!
She is survived by her two sons, Christopher Henry (Karen Humphries) Koelle, Chattanooga, Douglas Gran (Becky Hibner) Koelle, Morris, Ill.; three grandchildren, Christian Carl Koelle, Chattanooga, Katrina Elaine Koelle, Mesa, Ariz., and Christopher Reynolds Koelle, Morris, Ill.; as well as a beloved cousin, Andy Solomon, Van Nuys, Calif.
Avis was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Wayne G. Koelle; parents, Emma and Henry Solomon; and beloved cousins, Charles, Wilfred and Barwin Solomon.
A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. today, Sept. 27, 2009, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Harold McClure officiating.

Linda Ray
Linda Diane Ray, 59, of Harrison, passed away Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009.
She was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was of the Baptist faith.
She was previously employed with Air Filtration Systems for more than 10 years and enjoyed camping, trips to Daytona Beach and holidays. She was also known as the “Neighborhood Mom,” who loved cooking for her family and friends and had established an extended family with staff and patients at Erlanger’s Tumor Clinic.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Winston and Polly Sisson.
Survivors include her loving husband of more than 40 years, Eugene Ray; children and spouses, Gina (Dwight) Hunter, of Chattanooga, Marty (Lisa) Ray, Marvin (Lisa) Ray, Jason “J.J.” (Haley) Ray, and Jeannie Ray, all of Harrison; stepchildren and spouses, Sheila (Jerry) Partch, of Roscoe, Ill., Tony (Margie) Ray, of Denver, Colo., J.T. Joseph Young
Joseph Wheeler Young, 81, of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at his home.
He was the son of the late Otto and Mary Sue Young; and was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Ann Young.
He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
He served as a sergeant first class in the U. S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada and U.S., national executive committee of the American Legion.
He served as past chairman for the National Cemetery Committee, Medal of Honor Museum and the Area Veterans Council. He served as past commander of American Legion Post #95 and past state commander of the American Legion. He was a member of the national executive committee of the American Legion, veterans insurance committee, insurance committee for the American Legion, On Eagles Wings and the Knights of Columbus Council #610.
Mr. Young retired from Kleen–A–Matic after 40 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Young, of Chattanooga; two sons, Joe Young, of Bradley County, Don Young, East Ridge; three grandchildren, Dustin Leslie Young, Traci Elaine Riggs, Ryan Lewis Phillips Young; three great-grandchildren; brother, Bob Young, of Waverly, Tenn.; sisters, Sue Ann Brown and Sara Light, both of Nashville; and several nieces and nephews.

Newell Anderson
KNOXVILLE — Newell Sanders “Andy” Anderson, 101, died Wednesday evening, Sept. 23, 2009, at his home on St. Simons Island, Ga.
He was born on Aug. 13, 1908, in Lookout Mountain, Tenn., to Judge James Harvey and Norinne Sanders Anderson.
His first job as a boy was at his grandfather Sander’s factory in Chattanooga stenciling numbers on tractors. Educated at McCallie School and graduating from the University of Tennessee, where he was a member of the ATO fraternity, Newell had a lifelong love of cars and engines. Said to have the first car at UT, he studied both auto mechanics and electrical books extensively and opened his own garage at Andy’s Esso on Gay Street after retiring from KUB. After 30 years, the business was closed and Newell worked for Higgenbotham on Central in his last career for another 30 years until it closed.
His dedication to civic service was paramount in his business and personal life. He was voted Young Man of the Year in 1943. He served as president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, president of the South Knoxville Rotary Club, Exalted Ruler of the Knoxville Elks Lodge and belonged to the Chamber of Commerce. He was a 32nd-degree Mason.
He was a dedicated member of Central United Methodist Church, where he served on the board of trustees, the administrative board and as president of the Married Couples Class. Until he was 95, he was associated with Higginbotham Heating and Air and continued his service to the community with Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels.
He and his wife, Jane, spent much of their spare time helping others with their special needs. Newell was the epitome of a Southern gentlemen and he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Preceding him in death were parents; his sister, Norinne Anderson Hickman; and his grandparents, Sen. and Mrs. Newell Sanders, and Judge and Mrs. James Anderson.
First married to Mary Allen, of Chattanooga, widowed and then married to Anne Turley Rochelle, of Jackson, Tenn., he is survived by his wife, Jane Crowe Anderson, of St. Simons Island; children, Newell (Lynne McFarland) Anderson Jr., of Nashville, James H. Anderson, of Lenoir City, Rochelle (Douglas) Veum, of Knoxville, Michael (Florence) Anderson, and Catherine (Michael) Murphy, of St. Simons Island.
Funeral service will be at Central United Methodist Church, 201 E. Third Ave., Knoxville, today, Sept. 27, 2009, at 1:30 p.m.
Interment at Lynnhurst Cemetery at 10 a.m. Monday.

WHITWELL — Frances Jewell Gilbert Greene, 73, passed away Friday, Sept. 25, 2009.
She was preceded in death by her son, Tony Greene; parents, Greeley and Edna Gilbert; brothers, John Gilbert, Frank Gilbert, and James Gilbert.
Mrs. Greene was the owner of T-Mart in the Griffith Creek community in Whitwell.

ROSSVILLE — Winnie Biddle, 63, died Friday, Sept. 25, 2009.
She was a member of McFarland United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Cleo Gray Baker; brothers, Granvel and Franklin Baker.
Survivors include her husband, Yuell Biddle, Rossville; son, Chris (Beth Ann) Biddle, New Salem, Ga.; grandson, Christopher Biddle; sister, Louise (Jim) Bowen, New Salem; sister-in-law, Bertha Baker; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel with the Rev. Matt Hampton and the Rev. Gary Grogg officiating.
Interment will follow in Hawkins Cemetery.

ROSSVILLE — Winifred “Jack” Blankenship, 76, passed away Friday, Sept. 25, 2009, in a local hospital.
A native of Pikeville, Tenn., he had lived in the North Georgia area for more than 50 years and was employed as a typesetter with The Chattanooga Times for 25 years. Mr. Blankenship was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean war.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jess and Hazel Blankenship; and infant son, Wendell Blankenship.
Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Sandra Blankenship; sons and daughters-in-law, James Lamar and Rita Blankenship, Eric Allen and Debbie Blankenship, Felix “Charlie” and Debbie Blankenship; brothers, Norman (Billie) Blankenship, Bill (Gail) Blankenship; sisters, Janice (Denny) Foster, Diane (Harry) DeBoard, Nancy (Dale) Shasteen; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. CDT Tuesday at Blankenship Cemetery in Pikeville.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. EDT Monday at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home in Rossville, and from 10:30 a.m. until noon CDT Tuesday at Putnam-Reed Funeral Home, 1171 Main St. in Pikeville.

ROSSVILLE — Opal Kathleen Hardin, 79, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009.
She had lived in the North Georgia area for the past 68 years and was a member of Canaan Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Sara Dickerson; husband, James Hardin; and brother, Carl Dickerson.
Survivors include four children, Ann Melton, of Rossville, Ronald (Pam) Evans, Mike (Sharon) Daniel, both of Harrison, and Tom (Kathy) Cook, of Fayetteville, Ga.; brother, Charles Ray Dickerson; sister, Frances Goodwin, of Crossville, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, in the Fort Oglethorpe Chapel with Pastor Jimmy Coleman officiating.
Burial will follow in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Myrtle Holcomb
FORT OGLETHORPE — Myrtle Elizabeth Dover Holcomb, 96, passed away Saturday Sept. 26, 2009, at a local nursing home.
A lifelong resident of the Catoosa County area, she was a former employee of Sears, where she worked for 12 years. She was a lifelong member of Boynton Baptist Church, where she played the piano and organ for most of her life.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John W. Holcomb; father, James Dover; mother, Carrie Elizabeth Harp Freenie; and daughter, Ann Beaver.
She is survived by two sons, Col. John (Beverly) Lamar Holcomb, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Robert “Bob” (Jan) Holcomb, of Chattanooga; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at Boynton Baptist Church with Dr. Keith McLeod officiating.
She will lie in state at the church 1-2 p.m. on Tuesday.
Interment will follow at Anderson Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James H. McMahan; her parents, Julius and Beulah Pangle; and son, Gary McMahan.
Survivors include her son, James (Brenda) McMahan, Rising Fawn; daughters and husbands, Lynn and Rabbit Buffington, Trenton, Ga., Nadine and Bob Woods, Rising Fawn; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Vickie Qualls.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Nolan; children, Michelle Johnston, Tammy Gann, Angie Rogers, Tammy Henderson, Angie Baxter and Scott Nolan; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was born in Chickamauga to the late Jake and Bessie Nunn Walker and had been a lifelong resident of Chickamauga. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and the Good News Sunday School Class. He retired from Chattanooga Glass Co.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack and Joe Walker.
He is survived by his wife of 41 wonderful years, Charlotte Ann Goodwin Walker, of Chickamauga; daughters and their spouses, Judy (John) Rodriguez, of Gatlin, Tenn., Sue (Bill) Hampton, of Marietta, Ga., Jane (Pat) Woolsey, of Franklin, Tenn., Donna Crabtree, of Chickamauga, Ga., Cindy Sain (Kenny Whitworth), of Chattanooga, Kay Graham, Tammy Campbell, both of Rossville, Johanna (Nathan) Williams, of Fort Oglethorpe; son, Rick Posey (Deborah Fearrington), of Fort Oglethorpe; sister, Jean (Kenneth) Jones, of Chickamauga; brothers, Julian Walker, of Chattanooga, Jerry (Sharon) Walker, of Dawsonville, Ga.; dear friend, Frank Rimasfski; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
