Georgia receiver from Calhoun shines in scrimmage

Georgia held its second closed scrimmage Saturday at Sanford Stadium, and Bulldogs coach Mark Richt was very open afterward in his praise of the quarterbacks.

Aaron Murray, Zach Mettenberger and Logan Gray combined to throw for 396 yards and four touchdowns -- with two interceptions -- according to statistics Richt provided. Kris Durham, the senior from Calhoun High who sat out last season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, was the big beneficiary with three receiving touchdowns.

"The throwing and catching, I thought, was pretty outstanding," Richt said. "I would say the quarterbacks were very impressive. They had a very good command of what was going on out there and moved well in the pocket. They made nice scrambles, getting extra yardage and finding the open receiver. All of them were putting the ball on the money.

"Some of the officials even mentioned, 'You guys are really throwing the ball well.' Today you walk away feeling like we're in good shape."

Murray completed 13 of 19 passes for 159 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the fifth consecutive spring scrimmage, dating back to last year, in which he's completed more than 50 percent of his attempts. Mettenberger had his second straight solid scrimmage, going 10-of-16 for 126 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Gray completed 7 of 11 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown Saturday after going 6-of-14 in the first scrimmage.

Richt has been giving the quarterbacks equal repetitions and respect through 11 spring practices. He announced Saturday that he will produce a quarterback depth chart following next weekend's G-Day game.

"We'll rack them where we think they are," Richt said. "We won't necessarily say, 'This guy is the starter,' but we might say, 'This guy is No. 1,' or, 'These are the co-No. 1s.' We'll give some indication as to how they'll stack up going into the fall."

One certainty for the season is that Mettenberger will not start the opener because of his suspension resulting from a March 7 arrest on five misdemeanor charges near Valdosta.

A.J. Green had six catches for 80 yards Saturday, while Israel Troupe had four for 45 and a score to assist Durham in a productive day for the receivers. The 6-foot-5, 209-pound Durham is Georgia's only senior scholarship wideout.

"He's doing great," Richt said, "and I know he's excited about practicing again and playing football again."

With Caleb King and Washaun Ealey nursing sore knees, Carlton Thomas led all rushers with 93 yards on 16 carries. Defensive end Demarcus Dobbs and inside linebacker Christian Robinson each had six tackles and a sack to pace the defense, while cornerback Brandon Boykin had five tackles and an interception.

Odds and ends

When asked again about the Athens-Clarke County Police incident report filed by a married couple who claim they were harassed by four football players in an A&A Taxi van last Sunday morning, Richt said, "I believe by Monday we will have all the information needed." ... The offense had one penalty (procedure) all day. ... Austin Long of Briarcrest Christian High in Memphis, who sat out last season after undergoing back surgery, has been cleared to start lifting weights.
