Lora Jane Mahan Allender passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at her home, she was 93.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Essex officiating.

Burial will follow in Smith Cemetery.

Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until the time of the service Saturday.

Douglas Everett

Douglas M. "Mac" Everett, 67, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, April 7, 2010.

Mr. Everett will be missed by all of his family and his many, many friends. He had served the Hamilton County area for 30 years in Law Enforcement; he retired in 1988 as Chief of Police for the city of Soddy-Daisy after serving there for a total of 15 years.

Mac was the kind of man that loved to make people happy, he was very well known for his wonderful sense of humor, always ready with a joke or a story to make you smile. He played music for many years and played the bass at nearly every service at The Guiding Light Community Chapel where he was a member. He is one man that we can truly say he will be greatly missed by all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Bennett andAllie Mae Everett of Soddy-Daisy, grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

He is survived by Raylene Everett; his brother, John will Everett; sisters, Shirley Joy Roby, Sandra Helton; three sons and their wives, John Douglas and Carleitha Everett, Steven M. and Marilyn Everett, Brandon and Megan Everett; six grandchildren, Jacob, Lacey, Cody, Kelsey, Hayley, Lily; and also his nephews and their wives, Michael and Becky Jordan, William and Donna Jordan and Eric Everett.

The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010, at Williamson and Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Vernon Sneed officiating.

Burial will follow in Poe Cemetery.

Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today and noon to 3 p.m. Saturday.

George Fillauer Jr.

George William Fillauer Jr., 91, of Chattanooga, died Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at a local hospital.

He graduated from Notre Dame High School, and took pre-pharmacy at the University of Chattanooga with additional studies at the University of Tennessee Memphis.

He completed civil pilot training at Lovell Field, and at a later date he began naval air training at the U.S. Naval Air Station at Pensacola, Fla., graduating Nov. 26, 1942 as Ensign USNR. During the war he flew naval transport aircraft in the Pacific Theater. Nov. 2, 1946 he received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy.

Upon returning to Chattanooga, he joined his father in the family Fillauer Surgical Supply business. After his father's retirement, he served as president for seven years before the merger with Durr Drug of Montgomery, Ala., this company was bought by Bergan Brunswick and later by Cardinal Health. The Orthopedic division and Reagent Chemical Co. was acquired by Karl Fillauer. The last few years he was head of the laboratory reagent chemical department of Fillauer LLC. He was a member of the Fairyland Club for 54 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, George William Fillauer; his mother, Marie Millonig Fillauer; and his brother, Carlton Fillauer.

He is survived by his sister, Rita Kerr of Lookout Mountain, her husband, George Kerr; nephews, Karl Fillauer, Dr. Mel Wilcox, of Birmingham, Ala.; nieces, Melanie Landers, of Birmingham, Debbie Tillard, of Chattanooga, Kathy Brooks, of Signal Mountain, Terri Baker, of Sarasota, Fla.; sister-in-law, Betty Fillauer, of Signal Mountain; seven grandnephews; four grandnieces; four great-grandnephews; and two great-grandnieces.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.

Burial will be private at a later date.

The family will receive friends today from 5-7 p.m. at Wann Funeral Home.

Alma Gray

Alma Vineyard Gray, 85, of Apison, died Wednesday, April 7, 2010, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Gray was retired from UTC and was a longtime member of Tyner United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Charles H. Gray Jr.; daughters, Jeanette Conner, Chattanooga and Beverly McGowan, Apison;sister, Shirley Stafford, Lenoir City, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Les Conner, Lisa Conner and Brian McGowan; two great-grandchildren, Charlie and Caroline Conner; special friends, Juanita Felton and Amelia Roberts.

Services will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Glenn Moseley officiating.

Burial will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

John Holliday

John "Doc" Holliday, 64, of Red Bank, passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at his residence.

He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and was a Vietnam veteran serving with the U.S. Army. Doc was a registered respiratory therapist for many years, he started the program at East Ridge Hospital. He retired from Erlanger after eight years of service. Doc loved the lake on his boat and farming.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson H. and Clara Collier Holliday; brothers, Edward Holliday and Jamey R. Holliday.

Surviving relatives: sons, Sean Russo, of Summerville, Ga., Michael Holliday, of Pikeville, Tenn.; daughter, Sarah Phipps, of Red Bank; sisters, Mildred K. Harmon, of Chattanooga, Wilma L. Bryant, of Hixson; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday April 10, 2010 at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. John Franklin officiating.

The interment will be in Collier Cemetery, Pikeville, Tenn.

Mary Kilgore

Mary Alice Kilgore, 77, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2010.

She was born in Dalton and moved to Chattanooga in 1948. She was of the Baptist faith and retired from Foam Fabricators of Chattanooga after 30 years of employment.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Donald L. Kilgore; parents, A.J. and Dillie C. Brock; sons, Donald L. Kilgore Jr., Dewitt Kilgore and Johnny Kilgore; and brother, Buford "B.B." Brock.

She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Callahan (Jim), Donna Clayton, Brenda Smith, Sandy Kilgore and Sherrell Kilgore; sons, Ronnie Kilgore (Sammie) and Bufford Kilgore (Linda); sisters, Wylene and Winfield Hensley, Nellie and Jim Duncan, Minnie Ruth and Ricky Scott, Louise and Eddie Edwards; brothers, Kenneth and Ann Brock, Andrew and Bertie Brock; sister -in-law, Lottie Brock; 27 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 2010 with Brother Jay Walthour officiating.

Interment to follow at Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

Eileen MacDonald

Eileen B. MacDonald, 88, of Ooltewah, died Thursday, April 8, 2010.

June McCall

Juanita June McCall, 78, of Hixson, died Thursday, April 8, 2010.

She has been a resident of the Chattanooga area since 1952 and retired from DuPont with 34 years of service.

June was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War and a member of the American Legion Post 0159.

Survivors include her sister, Evora Ogle, of Cleveland; daughter, Vivian Morrow; granddaughter, June Patience (Fred Sr.) Miller; great-grandchildren, Fred Miller Jr. and Stephen Miller, all of Hixson; niece, Phyllis Buckner Puckett and great-nephew, R. Andrew Puckett, both of Atlanta; 10 other nieces and nephews; and several other great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Williams officiating.

Interment will follow in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery, Maryville, Tenn.

Muriel Posey

Hilda Muriel Elder Posey died Wednesday, April 7, 2010.

She was born March 4, 1912 the daughter of the late Fred and Clara Mae Atkins Elder. She attended Central High School Class of 1929 then the University of Chattanooga where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She taught secondary school in Chattanooga and in Maryland.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles R. Posey; son, Thomas Elder Posey; sister, Jane Elder Hodge; sister-in-law, Ruth Posey Akers; son-in-law, Raymond E. Clark.

Survivors include her sons, C. Richard Posey (Barbara), Harry H. Posey (Mimi), Grant F. Posey (Rhonda), Gary W. Posey (Terry); daughters, Hilda Jane Posey Clark, Jenny Ruth Posey; niece, Helen Ruth Akers Jenkins; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Chattanooga nurses for their care of our mama, especially her nurse, Mark.

The true loss in her passing is known only by those who never got the chance to meet her, and with any luck, she will live on with those of us who did. For all that she did for us, that's the very least we can do for her. We will miss her terribly.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Greenwood Cemetery.

Effie Fowler Rogers, 89, of Harrison went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 from a local hospital.

Funeral services will be held today, April 9, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the Highway 58 chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. David Bragg and Pastor Orvan Childers officiating.

Interment will follow in Bartlebaugh Cemetery.

James Sherrell

James Sherrell, 89, of Chattanooga, died Thursday, April 8, 2010, in a local healthcare facility.

James was a member of White Oak Baptist Church and a member of East Lake Masonic Lodge 698 F&AM. James was a survivor of the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 serving on the USS SanFrancisco. James was a retired gas plant operator.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Chambless Sherrell; daughters, Linda Sherrell Compton of Louisville, Ky., Judy Sherrell Meeks and husband, John, of Chattanooga, Kristie Sherrell, of Midland, Mich.; son, James Michael Sherrell and wife, Myra, of Knoxville; sister, Effie Sherrell Romans Waters, of LaFayette, Ga.; brothers, Dewey Sherrell, of Jackson County, Ala., and John Henry Sherrell, of Woodville, Ala.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Tony Wilson officiating.

Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Scottsboro, Ala.

His grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Carolyn Smith

Carolyn Ann Redmon Smith, 73, of Chattanooga passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2010.

She graduated from Red Bank High School in 1954.

Carolyn is a member of Woodland Heights Baptist Church where she served as Secretary and Treasurer.

Carolyn worked as a kindergarten aide at White Oak Elementary for several years and then worked at Kmart on Signal Mountain Blvd. in the electronics and fashions departments and retired after 24 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Redmon and Dyllas T. Wolfe.

Survivors include her son, Bill (Liz) Smith, of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Diane (Jim) Ridley, of Red Bank; grandsons, Travis and Tanner Smith, of Dallas, Texas; and cat Lucy.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Hughes officiating.

Entombment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 4 to 8 p.m. today, April 9, 2010, and on Saturday from noon until the time of the service at the North Chapel.

Leroy Smith

Franklin Leroy Smith, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, after a courageous six year battle with cancer.

Born Dec. 10, 1935 in Chattanooga, Leroy attended Red Bank High School. In 1958 he graduated with a B.S. in Engineering from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and remained actively involved with his fraternity brothers throughout the years. Upon graduation, he was recruited by Bethlehem Steel Co. as a sales representative. His first assignment was to the Detroit, Mich., office where he met his wife, Judy, of 48 years. In the early 1960s he joined the National Guard and eventually went to Officer's Candidate School where he was awarded The Erickson Trophy for Most Distinguished Graduate for the State of Michigan. In the late 1960's, he returned to Chattanooga with his family and became a successful insurance agent and earned the Chartered Life Underwriter designation.

Leroy was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. He was a member of the Chattanooga-Lafayette Emmaus Community, served a short time with the Gideon's, and was a member of the Chattanooga Golf & Country Club where he was an avid golfer.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys Burks Smith and William Harlsey Smith; and a brother, William Burks Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Judy; three children, Thomas Arthur Smith, Krystal Gay (Carl) Scarbrough, and Curtis Leroy (Lesa) Smith. He was very proud of his five grandchildren, Heather Ann (Ryan) Ewalt, of Salisbury, Md., Andrew Franklin Scarbrough, Stephen Thomas Scarbrough, Chelsea Van Dyke Smith, and Chandler Elizabeth Smith, all residing in Chattanooga.

Leroy was a man of faith and was not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. A celebration of his life will be shared with friends and family at a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church on Monday, April 12, 2010, at 1:30 p.m. with visitation one hour before the service. Pastor Tim Tinsley officiating.

Brandon Jamal Spralling, 22, passed away Friday, April 2, 2010 in Chattanooga.

He was a graduate of Brainerd High School class of 2006.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Nadine Marble Smith; and uncle, Kelvin Spralling.

Survivors include his mother, Tracy Spralling; father, Kelvin Smith; siblings, LaQuonda, LaShonda, LaQuisha Spralling, Kelvina and Justin Smith; a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Community Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Gerald Penn, officiating.

Interment in Highland Cemetery.

Wendel Stassen

Wendel Edward Stassen, 68, of Hixson, died Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at his home.

Wendel was the son of the late Kenneth and Pauline LaRocque Stassen of Illinois. Wendel was an engineer and had worked for various companies in the engineering field.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Bell Stassen; his beloved Gus; daughter, Deborah (Lance) Bowman, of Hixson; sons, Douglas (Lee) Land, of Bealeton, Va. and Jerry Land, of Cohutta, Ga.; sister-in-law, Loretta (Elbert) Stevens, of Cleveland; brother-in-law, Ron (Pegi) Bell, of Big Canoe, Ga.; three granddaughters, Jessica Ray, Sarah Land and Alexandria Land; two grandsons, Emory Land and Charlie Land; four nieces, Kim (Russ) Peck, Karen Whitt, Catherine Stevens and Kristen (Eric) Gray; two nephews, Bill Stevens and Greg (Vicki) Bell.

Grace Stephison

Major Grace Stephison, a retired Salvation Army Officer, 83, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, April 4, 2010 in a local hospital.

Major Stephison was a daughter of the late Alfred Jay and Winnie Loomis Stephison and was a lay leader of the Salvation Army Citadel Corps.

Survivors include a grand niece, Terry Wintzel, Culleoka, Tenn.; a grand nephew, Barry Hodge, Mount Pleasant, Tenn.

Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the Salvation Army Citadel Corps with Major Gary Bergen and Colonel Gary Herndon officiating. Major Stephison will be at the church one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

Helen Swofford

Helen F. Swofford, of Athens, Ga., formerly of Chattanooga passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2010, after a long illness.

She was 90 years old. Helen was born Feb. 20, 1920, in Allendale, S.C. to the late Mack and Nonie Mixson. Helen was a graduate of Winthrope College and worked in Washington, D.C. during World War II. She held the highest rating for a woman with Civil Service. She married Sergeant Major Curt Swofford.

Helen will be remembered for her vibrant personality and true concern for others.

Helen was a charter member of Bayside Baptist Church and served in many ways. She was a member of Emmanuel small group.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband and parents as well as her brothers, Richard, Claude, and Cameron; and sister, Margaret.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Mary Swofford, of Chattanooga; brother, Edward Mixson, of Bluffton, S.C.; and numerous, wonderful and caring grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Curt's daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Tom Gearhart for their watchful and caring eye over her the past several years.

Charles Thomas

Charles A. "Chic" Thomas, 90, of Hixson and formerly of Signal Mountain, went to join his Heavenly Father on Saturday, April 3, 2010.

Chic was born Dec. 13, 1919 in New Albany, Ind., to the late Catherine and Clarence Thomas. While living on Signal Mountain, Chic served first as Mayor and then as Fire and Police commissioner. He retired from DuPont, where he worked in personnel. He and his wife, Theda, attend Red Bank Presbyterian Church, where Chic taught Sunday School. He also attended Bryan College in recent years.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Boaz Thomas; his sister; and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Theda Freeland Thomas; son, Charles A. "Chuck" Thomas Jr. and wife, Winnie; daughters, Ann Thomas Shoup and Elizabeth Thomas Gross and husband, Tony; brother, August Thomas; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service in Chic's honor will be held at Red Bank Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2010, with the Rev. Everett Gossett and the Rev. Sturgis Poorman officiating.

There will be a reception in the Church Fellowship Hall following the service on Saturday.

She was a native of Centerville, Tenn., and a member of Highland Park Baptist Church.

The Rev. Bruce Howland, the Rev. Robert Circeo and Dr. Danny Lovett will conduct the service Saturday at 10 a.m. in the church.

Interment will be in Nichols Cemetery, Centerville, Tenn.
