GPS earns Rotary title number 13

Evans wins in singles and doubles for the Bruisers, who edge Vestavia Hills by half a point.

Sarah Evans and Bronte Goodhue might never play doubles again like they did Saturday.

But in the No. 1 doubles final of the A Division of the Rotary Invitational Tournament, they played like a team possessed.

The GPS duo's 8-1 victory over Vestavia Hills' Lauren Levant and Caroline Faught put the Bruisers ahead. That and another Vestavia Hill loss at No. 2 doubles gave GPS its 13th tournament title by virtue of a half-point victory.

GPS finished with 18 points, with Vestavia -- the two-time defending champion -- finishing with 17.5. Baylor was fourth with 10.5, right behind Hutchison with 11. Knoxville Webb finished fifth with 6.5 points, Harpeth Hall had five and Huntsville and Mountain Brook rounded out the scoring with 4.5 and 2.5 points.

Evans and Goodhue, who fell to the same Vestavia Hills team in last year's Rotary final, cruised in the rematch.

"We really wanted to get them back," Goodhue said. "They beat us in a close final last year, but we tried our best and it worked out for us this season."

Said Vestavia Hills coach Nancy Becker: "They couldn't do anything wrong in that final."

Levant and Faught won the Alabama Class 6A state doubles title last season.

Evans and freshman Emma McCallie also claimed singles titles for GPS. Baylor's Harper Caswell and Kelly Scruggs claimed the No. 3 doubles title, defeating the Bruisers' McCallie and Aliza Williams.

"Today was just a total team effort," GPS coach Sue Bartlett said.

Montgomery Bell Academy used a strong effort during the morning session to take its fourth boys' title, finishing with 18 points. St. Xavier from Louisville, Ky., was second with 15, and Baylor had 14. MBA had come into the day 1.5 points ahead of the other two.

Baylor's Red Raiders finished with one champion: Aditya Rali and Anderson Scarpa at No. 3 doubles. They defeated St. Xavier's Zachary Kuo and Joe Siami 9-8 (7-3).

"I was pleased with the way we played," MBA coach Zac Hood said. "We knew that coming into today we were close with St. Xavier and Baylor, but we had an excellent morning.

"We wanted to take care of business and not sit around hoping that other teams lose."

Mountain Brook took fourth with 10.5 points, and Knoxville Webb was fifth with 10. McCallie and Randolph had 3.5 points each, and Christian Academy of Knoxville finished with 1.5.
