Chattanooga: Motorcycle rider suffers severe head injuries

A man on a motorcycle suffered severe head injuries this morning on U.S. 27 when a driver on a cell phone suddenly switched lanes, causing traffic to come to an abrupt stop, police say.

Marcus W. Black 32, of Chattanooga was taken to Erlanger hospital with severe head injuries after his motorcycle slid out of control and struck a 2009 Saturn, police spokeswoman Lt. Kim Noorbergen said.

The accident was caused when an unknown driver, who was on a cell phone, switched lanes, forcing other drivers to slam on their brakes, Lt. Noorbergen said. Mr. Black was about three or four cars back and tried to stop, but lost control and was thrown from his motorcycle, she said.

No charges will be placed at this time, she said.

Unfortunately, the motocyclist's wife and child watched this accident in horror as they drove behind him and saw everything. Is it so hard to wait until you get to work to pick up a cell phone? Driving is not a game!

My prayers are with Mr. Black and his family and that he fully recovers from this accident.

Wouldn't it be nice if cell phones could have the same capabilitias as a TomTom and require you to pull over in order to use them? That would prohibit a driver from driving and talking/texting on a phone. I think the only number you should be allowed to dial while operating a vehicle is 911.
