KNOXVILLE -- Janzen Jackson couldn't figure out why University of Tennessee football teammate Gerald Williams kept asking him about his favorite type of potato chip.

Eventually, the gifted young safety told the rising senior defensive end that he liked the new spicy Cheetos.

"Thanks," Williams replied. "I just wanted to know what you were having for dinner Saturday night."

Williams then informed Jackson that the winners of today's Orange and White game would feast on a steak dinner, while the losers would settle for hot dogs and potato chips.

Jackson will start for the White team, while Williams will start for the Orange.

The teams practiced with each other Thursday and met afterward, with the Orange team concluding its talk with a rousing rendition of "White team (stinks)."

Loud, good-natured ribbing ensued from both sides, and it reached a point where first-year coach Derek Dooley asked a student manager to blow the air horn and "tell them to get out of here before we have a riot."

"I think they're excited. What do y'all think?" Dooley then said to reporters.

If the Vols weren't excited, they were faking it quite well.

"We're not going to be showing too much stuff on either side of the ball, so it's just about which team makes the most plays," defensive end Chris Walker said. "It's just going to be about competing and having fun, but at the same time nobody wants to lose and have to hear about it all summer long.

"It's just going to be one of those things where we'll see who can make the most out of our base stuff. There's not going to be too many blitzes and trick plays and all of that for down-the-road purposes ... but like I said, nobody wants to lose."

That's the kind of environment Dooley wants to cultivate with his program, and the coach said his first spring has instilled that nicely.

"I feel really good about the 14 days of work we've put in," Dooley said. "I feel like I have a very good handle on our personnel. I feel like our staff has a good feel for some of the things we can do well and some of the things we better stay out of. I feel like we have a good understanding of our leaders, going forward. It went about as well as I could have ever hoped for from an administrative standpoint, and from a players' commitment standpoint.

"I'm looking forward to re-evaluating some things and cleaning up some things after this week, and then getting ready for the fall."
