Virginia Aslinger

Virginia Louise "Ginny" Aslinger, 52, of Hixson, died Friday, April 23, 2010, at her home.

A native of Elgin, Ill., she moved to Hixson 17 years ago from Crystal Lake, Ill. A Registered Nurse, she had worked in hospitals and dialysis clinics. She attended Red Bank Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by her mother, Beverly Martel.

Survivors include her father, Henry Martel Jr.; and a brother, Steven Martel.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel with the Rev. Philip Summerlin officiating.

Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Eugene Bell

Eugene Robert Bell, 86, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Memorial Hospital.

He was retired salesman, a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, and of the Church of Christ faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Gilbert and Alice Lucille Bell; infant son, Eugene Robert Bell Jr.; brother, William Gilbert Bell Jr.

He is survived by Cathleen Bell; children, Robert (Carolyn) Bell, Janice Bell Ford (Anders Moller), Charlotte (Tim) Brooks, Joe Bell (Sherry Coe); seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 30, 2010 at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Minister Charles Cochran officiating.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dorothy Dalby

Dorothy Elizabeth Pangle Dalby, 93, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., died Monday, April 26, 2010, at Shenandoah Center in Charles Town.

Born Sept. 7, 1916 in Chickamauga, Ga., she was the daughter of the late George Alfred and Minnie Lee Slater Pangle.

She completed her nurses training at Newell and Newell Sanitarium, Chattanooga, and received her BS and MS degrees from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

She had served in the US Army Nurse Corp during World War II as a registered nurse. She was a retired Chemistry Professor with University of Tennessee at Chattanooga for over 25 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy A. Dalby and husband, Robert Gillette of Shepherdstown, Katherine D. Bozeman and her late husband, Hoyt of Kalaheo, Hawaii; and four grandchildren, Kristen E. Bozeman, Kala D. Bozeman, Pace A. Gillette-Aird and husband, Michael, and Robert D. Gillette.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Pangle and a sister, Ruth Conger.

Family will receive friends on Sunday, May 2, 2010 from 4 to 6 p.m. at J. Avery Bryan Funeral Home

Charles Frantz

Charles Norman Frantz, 81, of Chattanooga, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, from a local hospital.

He was a member of Crosspointe Baptist Church and a former member of Catoosa Baptist Tabernacle where he taught Sunday school and was a Scout leader for many years.

Charles loved gospel music and was a member of the Gospel Quartet "The Representatives". He was a past member of Fidelity Lodge 558 and a past member of the Fraternal Order of Firefighters. He was retired from the Chattanooga Fire Department as a dispatcher.

He was an avid coin and antique collector along with his father for many years while spending several years in the Optical business. He was an expert Blue Gill fisherman and an avid Rook player. He was a member of the Joe Engel Knot Hole Gang '1939' and the Co-Owner of Southland Super Worms.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Frank and Frankie Frantz.

He is survived by one sister, Norma Frantz, of East Ridge; extended family, Bill, Betty and Michael Kennedy; six grandchildren, Eric, David, Michael Jr, and Robby Kennedy, Josh and Alex Sewell; special friends, Trisha, Toot, Bullitt, M.C., Bill and Jason; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held today, April 29, 2010, at 7 p.m. in the Highway 58 chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Tankersley officiating.

Interment will be on Friday, April 30, at 11 a.m. in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. A.J. Bullard officiating.

Serving as pallbearers, Larry and Gary Templeton, Junior Sexton, Ronny Ross, Mark Kerley and Chief Rick Sewell.

Josephine Fulton

Josephine Angle Lamb Fulton, of Daytona Beach, Fla., passed away on Wednesday, April 21, 2010.

She was born in Gadsden, Ala., Aug. 28, 1920, the daughter of Joseph Newton Angle and Maggie Clara McMurrain Angle. Jo was preceded in death by husbands, James Houston Lamb Jr. and William L. Fulton; five brothers; and a sister, Edna Lokey.

She leaves behind two daughters, Peggy Lamb Rice, of Daytona Beach Shores, Fla. and Kathy Lamb, of Farragut, Tenn.; sister, Emma John Buchanan, of Anniston, Ala. and Norton, Mass.; grandchildren, Brett Rice, Kimball Rice, Elizabeth Utsey, Patricia Rice and Katy Biggs-Hale. "Mama Jo," as she was lovingly known, had eight great-grandchildren, Kimball II, Joseph and Jacob Rice; Maggie and Alex Utsey; Treyston Biggs, Michael Hale and Katelyn Biggs; and three great-great-grandsons, Ethan, Brandon and Aiden Rice. She will be deeply missed and remembered by her extended family and many friends.

During WWII Jo was a volunteer Red Cross nurse's aid, sold Luzier cosmetics, and studied art at Hunter Art Gallery, Chattanooga. She was a long time member of the Garden Club and created exceptional cakes from her bake shop. Jo and her daughter Kathy moved to Anniston, Ala., and resided in the guest house of "Camwood" on Woodstock Ave. While there she was a Buyer in the gift department of Hudson's Department store. Jo moved to Knoxville, with her husband Bill, who was an engineer for the Tennessee Valley Authority. She was a Life Master with ACBL and taught Bridge for over 30 years. She also enjoyed creating holiday décor items. She loved to entertain and treated everyone as "visiting royalty." She was a gracious hostess and the definition of a Southern Lady.

Jo was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church, Grace Episcopal Church, Chattanooga and Church of the Good Samaritan, Knoxville where she served arranging altar flowers.

Funeral services will be at Grace Church, Chattanooga, on Saturday, May 1, at noon with Father James Curtis presiding.

Harry Green

Harry "Fuzzy" Green, 86, of Chattanooga, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 27, 2010.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Chattanooga, born on Valentine's Day 1924, to the late Margaret and Cecil Green. Harry graduated from Central High School Class of 1943 and attended the University of Chattanooga. Harry was a Bugler First Class in the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

Harry was a member of Avondale Baptist Church where he had served as Music Director for 27 years, Deacon, Trustee and Sunday School teacher. He also led Senior Adult choirs at Avondale and Ridgeview Baptist Church. Harry retired after 36 years, as Purchasing Agent for Chattanooga Coke and Chemical Co. He directed the "Scenic City Concert Band" for 55 years. Harry was a past member of the "American Legion Post 95, Big Band." He also was a member of the American Legion Post 95 and a member of the Half Century Club. Some of Harry's greatest joys in life were, serving the Lord, his family, his music, hunting, fishing and watching his three grandchildren play sports.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mike Green; and a grandson, Stephen Glenn Green.

Harry is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mable Griffin Green; son, Steve Green and daughter-in-law, Glenda Hamill Green; three grandchildren, Josh, Colton and Samantha Green; sisters-in-law, Geraldine Wilson and Bobbie Griffin; nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the North Chapel.

Services for Harry will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 30, at the North Chapel with the Rev. Richard Sorey officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors. The American Legion Post 95 Color Guard will perform the honors and Jack Kinser, longtime friend, will play taps. Josh Green, Colton Green, Robert Best, Tom Bartleson, Tom Cox and Joe Murray will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be past and present members of the "Scenic City Concert Band."

Patricia Ann Lawson, 70, of Ooltewah, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010, in a local hospital.

She worked for Pioneer Bank for 27 years and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Vesta Gladys Vandergriff.

She is survived by her husband, Elmer Clyde Lawson; sister, Lynda Vandergriff; brother, Ray Vandergriff; grandson, Bobby Clyde Lawson; brothers-in-law, Cecil and Carroll Lawson; sisters-in-law, Ruby, Flora Dean, Betty; several nieces and nephews.

Helen Lewis

Lillian Helen Lewis, 88, Chattanooga, died Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at her residence.

She had been a resident of Chattanooga for over 50 years and was a member of East 34th Street Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday School. Mrs. Lewis enjoyed tending to her yard and flower gardens.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Roy L. Lewis; and a grandson, Dewayne Shirley.

Survivors are son, Ronald (Sybil) Lewis, Jasper, Tenn.; daughters, Bettye (Bud) Lowe, Sue (Danny) Dean, and Brenda (Lane) Jones, all of Chattanooga; brother, Lewis Holloway Jr., Jasper; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren.

Fred Lewis Reed, 63, of Harrison, passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2010, in a Cleveland hospital.

Charlie Rucks

Charles "Charlie" G. Rucks, 74, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2010.

Charlie was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and a 1955 graduate of Kirkman High School. He served our country in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Alhambra Shrine Temple. Charlie was retired from U.S. Pipe, Soil Pipe Division as a Superintendent with 30 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Mary Rucks; siblings, Martha Rucks Belue, Carolyn Louise Rucks and David Allen Rucks.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 52 years, Robbie Ricketts Rucks; siblings, William "Bill" J. (Faye) Rucks, Curtis F. Rucks, Jane Rucks Cole and Thomas "Jerry" G. (Dianne) Rucks; and a very close friend, Wayne Lamb; several nieces and nephews.

Elida Balzi Slagle, 87, passed away Thursday, April 15, 2010.

Survivors include two sons, Tony Slagle and Michael St. James; a daughter, Norma Jean Slagle Leite; three sisters, Nina Balzi Moura, Ninde Dos Campos and Eda Balzi Ritter; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Merton Slutz

Merton H. Slutz died Tuesday, April 27, 2010. He was born March 17, 1925, in Providence, R.I.

In 1935 he and his family moved to Knoxville. Following his graduation from Knoxville High School, he served in World War II with the United States Marine Corps in the South Pacific area. After completing his military service, he attended the University of Chattanooga. His career with the TVA. spanned 37 years.

Merton was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church until its closing, having taught Sunday School, been a member of the Chancel Choir and served on the Administrative Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J. Homer Slutz and Jennie Hammond Slutz and sister, Glenda S. Ballinger.

He is survived by his wife, Annette Thomas Slutz; niece, Anita (John) Killeffer, of Chattanooga; Rebecca Thomas, of Jacksonville, Fla.; nephew, Roger (Nancy) Thomas, of Jacksonville, Fla.; great-nephews, William, David and Richard Killeffer, of Chattanooga; Kevin Thomas, of Jacksonville, Fla.; and great-niece, Bonnie Thomas, of Jacksonville, Fla.

A private graveside service will be at Chattanooga National Cemetery with the Rev. Marvin Howard officiating.

He was a graduate of Clemson University, an Army veteran of WWII and retired from IBM after 50 years of service.

Lillian Ford

DAYTON -- Lillian Keith Ford, 92, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at Rhea Medical Center.

Mrs. Ford was born Sept. 5, 1917. She was a member of the Keith and Jones families, pioneer residents of Rhea County. Mrs. Ford was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and will be missed by many lifelong friends. In her later years, she was lovingly known to many as "Nana" Ford. She received her education at Dayton City School, Rhea Central High School and Abel's Business School. Mrs. Ford was a longtime employee of Robinson's Drug Store, Dayton City School, and retired from the Dayton Housing Authority. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dayton.

Mrs. Ford was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Ford Sr.; parents, Dayton natives, Wallace C. Keith and Maggie Mae Jones Keith; sister, Jane Keith Kimbrough; and daughter-in-law, Peggy Burnette Ford.

Survivors include her son, James H. Ford Jr. of Chattanooga; daughter, Sara Jane Ford Locke of Dayton; three grandchildren, Stephaine Ford Linkous (Darrell), of Cleveland, Tenn., Keith Locke (Jennifer), of Chattanooga, and James H. Ford III (Candice), of Athens, Tenn.; seven great-grandchildren; sister-in law, Betty Ford Byron, of Dayton and Frances Ford Watt, of Atlanta, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews and their families.

A celebration of her life will be Friday, April 30, at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Coulter-Garrison Funeral Home with Pastor John Anderson officiating.

SOUTH PITTSBURG -- William Gerald Mack, 21, died unexpectedly on Monday, April 19, 2010, while serving aboard the Submarine USS Nebraska.

An active duty Sailor with the U.S. Navy, he graduated from Richard Hardy Memorial School, attended University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and was a former employee of both Stevarino's and Lotto Mart in South Pittsburg.

SEWANEE -- Ann Patton Watkins, 75, died Monday morning, April 26, 2010, of complications from multiple myeloma.

Ann was the daughter of the late Evander and Anita Patton of Lookout Mountain, Ga., where she spent her childhood. She graduated from Girls Preparatory School in 1952 and from The University of Georgia in 1956. A lifelong educator, she taught at Fairyland School on Lookout Mountain, Stevenson (Ala.) Elementary, Sherwood (Tenn.) Elementary and later at Sewanee Elementary School, where she also served as principal from 1989 to 1999. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Rotary Club of Monteagle, Sewanee Pink Ribbon Society, South Cumberland Cultural Society, and Chi Omega Sorority. She was a 30-year parishioner at Otey Memorial Parish in Sewanee, where she had served on the vestry and was a Stephen Minister.

During her years in Sewanee, Ann also worked at Dubose Conference Center, managed the Hospitality Shop, facilitated weddings at All Saints Chapel, and was involved in many other community organizations and activities. Ann loved playing bridge, entertaining and cooking for family and guests in her home, spending weekends with her childhood girlfriends, and creating elaborate theme birthday cakes for her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Evander and Anita; and her sister Janet.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Francis Gettys Watkins Sr.; her daughter, Anna Watkins, of Atlanta; her son and daughter-in-law Frank and Ann Watkins, of Chattanooga; her son and daughter-in-law, Patton Watkins and Hunt Oliver, of Sewanee; and seven grandchildren, Patton Watkins, Evan Watkins, Camas Gazzola, Cullen Gazzola, Vladimir Watkins, Vlada Watkins and Ada Watkins; her sister, Mary Patton Clinton, of Signal Mountain; her first cousins, Barbara Patton Seals and Gerry Stephens, of Chattanooga.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 2, at Otey Memorial Parish in Sewanee, Tenn.

Edward Crumley Sr.

ROSSVILLE -- Edward L. Crumley Sr., 86, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2010.

He was a lifelong resident of Ooltewah and had lived the past four years with his son and daughter-in-law. He was a longtime member of Parker's Gap Baptist Church, was a Navy veteran serving during World War II in the Pacific on the USS Willmarth DE 638. During his service in World War II he was involved with five invasions and two sea battles including the Battle of Leyte Gulf.

He worked with Tennessee Stove Works/Modern Maid Stove for 37 years. After his employment with Modern Maid Stove he opened his own business in Ringgold, IBC Battery for over 20 years. He was currently working for Lakeview Middle School for nine years. Mr. Crumley was a member of the Destroyer-Escort Sailors Association and was an avid woodworker and gardener.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Crumley; sister, Ruby Stafford; brother, Fred Crumley; and several half brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his three children, Marilyn (Vernon) Ware, of Chattanooga, Edward (Chris) Crumley Jr., of Rossville, and Tim (Karen) Crumley, of Ringgold; brother, Orvel Crumley, of Ringgold; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Bobby Hatfield

ROSSVILLE -- Bobby G Hatfield Sr., 82, formerly of Rossville, passed away at his home in Seneca, S.C. on Monday, April 26, 2010 after a long battle with kidney disease.

He was born in Rossville on March 15, 1928 and was one of eight children. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was discharged when the war ended. Mr. Hatfield worked for several years in automobile sales and management. His accomplishments include being the first finance and insurance manager in the Chattanooga, area while being employed at Bert Brown Ford. He also worked for 25 years at Lane Funeral Home in Rossville. He later served as sales manager at Toyota of Greenville before his retirement.

Mr. Hatfield was preceded in death by his parents, Henry S. Hatfield Sr. and Ellen Youngblood Hatfield; his brothers Henry S. Hatfield Jr. and William A. Hatfield and twin sister, Betty Hatfield.
