CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Richard Spangler’s fortunes changed down the stretch Sunday at Cleveland Country Club.
Spangler’s second round in the Cleveland Invitational began with more wayward tee shots than he cares to remember. But, 26 putts was all he needed to card an even-par 72, which was good for a two-day total of 3-under-par 141 and the championship.
“I got off to a real slow start,” Spangler said. “I got it back on the back nine.”
Spangler was down by four strokes at the turn when he regrouped and closed his round in 34. That was more reminiscent of the way he played when he shot a first-day 69 that left him positioned in second place.
“It was hot,” Spangler said of Sunday’s conditions. “We played the course probably about 300 yards longer, too. The pins were easier, but the tees were much further back.”
Adam Stephens shot 71 and 72 and finished two strokes behind Spangler in the Championship A flight. Brendon Wilson, John Maupin, P.J. Shields and Scott Melton tied for third with even-par 144s. Matt Robertson was the first-day leader at 5-under but ended up seventh at 1-over.
Andrew Weathers shot 4-over (76-72) and was a one-stroke winner ahead of Wayne Woolfall in the Championship B flight.
Eddie Watson (79-73) and Jim Brown (73-79) tied atop the Senior flight. Watson won in a playoff.
