harryS Why you support the recalls? Since when is name calling a reason? Sure, that may have made you feel good to put down someone, but what did it do for understanding? I don't live in your state, I don't know anything about these people, and guess what, your rant with so much hate and with no thought nudged me to a bit of sympathy for them.

dewey60, you are showing your prejudice which one wonders where that comes from. Not all Tea Party members are racist. You need to try and look beyond the suspicious causing media you obviously adore and not judge everyone by a few. That's what I don't get about persons who call themselves liberal(meaning free and gracious). They demand a standard from others which they themselves refuse to keep. Look at the whole picture before you judge sir. But then you will likely be suspicious of me because we met on this site. FYI, I am not a Tea Pary member but respect their right to be respected which is not being done by a lot of the media nationwide. As for the recall, I think it is a bit silly but regard the rights of concerned persons who are pursuing it.

I don't live in Tennessee or Chattanooga, but the reason that the three are potentially being recalled is due to the passing of a property tax increase for the first time in nine years, and due to the passage of some rather hefty "storm water runoff fees" on businesses and homeowners.

Someone may correct me, but that is my understanding of the situation.

Some, or maybe all people inside the Chattanooga city limits feel that passing tax increases in this economy, rather than to have scaled back spending within the budget, which Mayor Littlefield claims he tried to do, is reckless politics in our current economic climate.

Property taxes? Okay, if it has been nine years since the last increase, that's a so-so issue.

I don't agree at all with making people pay for what Mother Nature dumps on our heads. It's a nonsensical tax in my opinion.

So...the more I read what I just wrote, maybe those responsible for assessing increased taxes on Chattanoogans SHOULD feel a little heat.

Many of my friends on Facebook have been inviting me to the recall protests, but they seem to be in the name calling camp, and I don't respond well to that tactic.

alprova, you explained their grievances much better than any of them have, which concerns me even more, because it seems like people are just mad at the government in general.

I didn't vote for Ron and I'm not generally a fan of his, but I'm a big fan of this Oliver Wendell Holmes quote: Taxes are the price we pay for civilization.

No one likes to pay taxes, and I'm a homeowner in Chattanooga, so I have a dog in this fight, but I DO like having police and schools and roads and all the other services we enjoy in the city, and I know I have to pay for those services.

A tax hike every nine years seems generous. After all, I'm sure the city employees want raises more often than every nine years. I know I would.

Thanks for reading, Katherine

State and local governments were hoping to get more stimulus money but the Republican "compromise" struck that funding from the final bill. It was a shrewd political move.

Tight local budgets only feed the "throw the bums out" mentality.

It's a mystery why Democrats water down bills to supposedly gain bipartisan support when Republicans seemed dedicated to always voting NO NO NO NO NO.

Why did they spend $750,000 on the old Farmers Market then to find out that it can not be built on after a $50,000 environmental study after they bought it.

Why did they spend $700,00 on a pervious parking lot, rain garden?

These are two examples of our city goverment wasting tax payers money. In tough times you do not spend more but spend less.

Thank you to the people out there with the re-call for taking a stand to show us how the goverment is wasting out money.

In regards to the storm water runoff fees the city leaders, Former Mayor Corker and Littlefield, have dragged their heels to come into compliance with EPA standards and now the piper is about to be paid by fines issued for non-compliance.

Instead of allocating monies and resources, and/or gradually raising taxes to meet these obligations, they waited until the 11th hour and now must impose these onerous taxes and fees before the EPA comes down on their head.

Hello, I am the senior organizer for Chattanooga Organized for Action (COA) and I would like to clarify a few things on this thread:

1.This Recall Campaign is a coalition effort that includes COA, which is a grassroots community organization, as well as Citizens to Recall Ron Littlefield and the Chattanooga Tea Party.

  1. COA is deeply concerned with the facts:

A. Our budget is a "black box" which is not shared with the citizens, we currently have several Open Records Requests with the city that are in non-compliance with TN State Law and are being reviewed by the State Comptroller's office.

B. There is ample and unequivocal evidence for large-scale, systemic corruption in our city. The evidence is available for public inspection at http://www.chattaction.org/corruption.php

C. The Mayor and City Council have approved a 19% property tax increase, a 300% stormwater fee increase, and a 5.5% sewer fee increase - but we cannot account for where this money is going (again, because we have no transparency, see (A)). Firefighters took a huge reduction in medical benefits this year, the police took a hit to their pensions, our stormwater facilities are leaking toxic human waste (now we are being sued for this! http://www.tcwn.org/sites/default/files/TCWN%2060-day%20notice%20Moccasin%20Bend_0.pdf), our City Attorney was caught siphoning off hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for the last 45 years in clear violation of TN State Laws and our own City Ethics Codes, and publicly owned land is being given away for free to well-connected friends of the mayor in backroom, sweet-heart land deals; given all this what reason do we have to assume that an increase in taxes will be anything other than a larger slush fund for the crooks and cronies in City Hall and the City Council?

Time to wake up Chattanooga! You are providing a gravy train for the Good Ol' Boys! Time to hold your leaders accountable and demand greater transparency in government! Time to Recall Ron, Rico and Benson!

There will be no special election, if the Recalls are secured by August 30th (that official date that all Recall Ron petitions must be turned in by) then it will be included in the November 2nd ballot.

Even if it "cost" the tax-payers a few thousand dollars, that is nothing compared to what can be potentially saved by removing corruption and cronyism - which is already costing us millions and millions of dollars every year (again, please review http://www.chattaction.org/corruption.php).

Democracy is NOT a spectator sport.

"If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle." -Frederick Douglas

And I wonder, does this guy really think that because MAYBE a donkey walks with a cloven hoof, like an elephant, which it doesn't, but if it did, that that would somehow prove liberal and conservative politicians employed identical legislative strategies?

And while I'm trampling around in the reeds the point goes floating off to sea. Oh yeah, I keep forgetting Republican strategy:
