Rossville man shot 4 times by East Ridge police, report shows

A Hamilton County medical examiner's report shows four gunshot wounds on the body of a Rossville man shot this week by East Ridge police.

Charles A. Harvey confronted two officers in parking lot of the East Ridge Fire and Police Service Center on Monday night. He died from those wounds shortly after the incident.

The report diagram shows three entry wounds — one in the left chest near the shoulder, one in the upper right back and the third in the inner left ankle. A bullet graze wound to the groin marked the fourth gunshot wound.

Police released a 911 call from Harvey recorded just prior to the shooting in which he tells the dispatcher he needs to see police and has a "serious problem." When officers exited the building to meet with Harvey, they saw a handgun in his waistband and warned him not to reach for it.

According to police, Harvey made verbal threats and reached for the weapon, which turned out to be a pellet pistol.

Randy Crane Jr., Harvey's son, said in an interview earlier this week that the event shocked the family and was out of character for his father.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident at the request of the Hamilton County district attorney, which is standard procedure with officer-involved shootings.

Impact NC, impact. A hit in the left shoulder can easily cause a turn exposing his upper right back to a second shot. Think about the trajectory of the second shot. If he had remained facing the same direction, the second shot could well have hit in relatively the same place as the first.
