Alabama communities to get $1.7 million for recycling

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Alabama Department of Environmental Management is giving 15 communities across the state $1.7 million in grants to enhance recycling programs.

The funds are generated by a $1-per-ton fee on waste dumped in landfills. The grants will help pay for recycling trailers, bins, collection trucks and other equipment, and support education efforts to encourage recycling.

A partnership among the Jefferson County Department of Health, the Alabama Environmental Council, UAB and the city of Birmingham will receive the largest grant, $276,368, to expand curbside and drop-off recycling programs in Jefferson County.
