Alabama deputies shoot, kill man

The man shot and killed at his home near Boaz in a confrontation with three sheriff’s deputies has been identified as 55-year-old Anthony Ray Sampson.

Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin said Monday that Sampson was shot and killed at his home Sunday afternoon.

Entrekin says three uniformed deputies went to the home on Sunday to serve a felony drug warrant and were met by a man with a pistol.

Entrekin says the deputies opened fire and called for backup. The sheriff said the deputies identified themselves as law enforcement officers when the entered the house. He says the deputies were attempting to serve a warrant on another man, Bobby Ray Emery, who lives at the same address.

Entrekin said the warrant charged Emery with failing to appear in court to face drug and reckless endangerment charges stemming from an incident where deputies were led on a high speed chase into DeKalb County.

The sheriff said deputies entered the house and found Sampson’s body after the shooting. He said deputies also found Mexican methamphetamine and packets of marijuana which appeared to have been packaged to sell.

Entrekin said a preliminary investigation found no reason to place the three deputies on administrative leave.

Emery was not immediately located.
