Gordon County deputy nabs international fugitive

During a traffic stop on Interstate 75, a Gordon County Sheriff’s Office deputy arrested a fugitive wanted in Romania.

Vasile Ionel Tomescu, 28, is wanted in Romania in connection with a human trafficking case, Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston said in a news release.

When the deputy pulled Tomescu over for speeding on Saturday morning, he became suspicious and typed in Tomescu’s information, Ralston said. Notification for Tomescu included that he was a fugitive and could be armed and dangerous, he said.

Tomescu then was arrested and was being held in the Gordon County Jail as of Monday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation will handle the case and transfer Tomescu at an unknown time, Chief Deputy Robert Paris said.
