Gift renovates Orange Grove Center's music classroom

The Music Department of Orange Grove Center received a holiday gift from Southwire Co. that will benefit more than 300 clients who attend classes in the room.

Southwire Co., a leading producer of wire and cable used in the distribution transmission of electricity in North America, gave a corporate gift that enabled the center to renovate the room as well as update equipment.

Based in Carrollton, Ga., Southwire assists individuals with disabilities by working with outside groups that provide jobs for them.

Southwire has become a major supporter of Orange Grove by contributing to varying areas of need at the center, according to Leslie Smith, public relations coordinator for OGC.

But their partnership extends further than a working relationship.

Sharon Thorn, the late wife of Southwire President Stu Thorn, wrote Orange Grove's theme song, "After All."

In her memory, the center's music room was christened the Sharon Thorn Music Center.

"Sharon believed in the Orange Grove Center, its staff and, most importantly, its clients. This new music center would have meant the world to her," said Mr. Thorn.

The music room's renovation includes new ceiling tiles, insulation, a lighting system and improvements to the heating/air system.

New instrument and equipment additions include a baby grand piano, an entertainment system with CD, DVD and Blu-ray players, receiver and computer.

There is a new 55-inch plasma-screen TV and an in-ceiling, surround-sound speaker system. A 40-inch-diameter, portable table drum that can be used by up to five players at one time. A new video camera and tripod system will be used for video learning and training.

Monty Parks, coordinator of the music program at Orange Grove Center, said that through contributions of Southwire and memorials to the music department in Sharon Thorn's name, "we have been able to greatly raise the level of services for the 300-plus clients who regularly visit the music room for various types of classes."

Orange Grove Center, Parks said, recognizes the powerful role that music plays in allowing anyone to express themselves in ways that words simply can't. The emotional needs of an individual are given an outlet through music.

Gross motor, fine motor, proprioceptive, social and educational issues may all be addressed and treated through the music program that Orange Grove is now able to offer.

Smith added that the music department also retains a significant amount of restricted funds set aside for future purchases for the music program. Funds will be utilized for further enhancement of the Sharon Thorn Music Center and the Orange Grove Center music program.

"I am so thankful for everyone's contributions in her memory. I am especially grateful to my Southwire coworkers, who dedicated an enormous amount of time, effort and creativity," Mr. Thorn said. "With all the love that was put into this center by so many, it will serve as a tangible reminder that 'we're not so different after all.'

"I can't think of a more perfect memorial and legacy for Sharon," he said.
