Nashville bans roadside pet sales, giveaways

NASHVILLE - Nashville's legislative body has banned the sale of animals along the roadside.

In an unanimous vote Tuesday night, the Metro Nashville Council approved the measure, which the sponsor said is aimed at animal welfare.

The Tennessean reported that in most cases, people cannot now legally sell or even give away dogs, cats - even rabbits, chickens and other animals - with few exceptions.

Those include people selling or giving away pets at their homes or businesses and nonprofit organizations whose main purpose is the care and adoption of animals.

Councilwoman Karen Bennett said sometimes people who take accept pets informally don't know if they have been properly vaccinated or treated.
