Everett Abercrombie
Everett Allen Abercrombie, 70, of Soddy-Daisy, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010.
Everett was born in Kansas City, Kan., and graduated from Bishop Ward High School there. He received his degree in milling engineering from Kansas State University where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Everett retired from Horizon Milling Co. in 2006, where he was the Eastern Regional Manager. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church and was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus.
Everett was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Carol Abercrombie; a grandson, Christopher Abercrombie and his parents, Mildred and Wilbert Watson.
He is survived by his wife of 8 1/2 years, Patricia Ann Abercrombie; three sons, Allen Abercrombie and his wife, Jackie, of Knoxville, James Abercrombie, of Hixson, and Dr. John Abercrombie, and his wife, Leah, of Knoxville; three stepdaughters, Rebecca Postic, Theresa Postic and DeAnna Onken, and her husband, Nathan, all of Minnesota; grandchildren, Jennifer, Amy, Frederick, Tyler and Ryan Abercrombie, April Olson, and her husband, Brandon, and their daughter, Autumn; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Keith and Janet Abercrombie; and several nieces and nephews.
A Rosary Service will be said at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church where the family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday.
A Mass of Celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 10768 Dayton Pike, Soddy-Daisy, TN 37379, with Monsignor Al Humbrecht and Father Mike Creson officiating.
Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Frances Basinger
Frances Jones Basinger, 80, our precious mother, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.
Mrs. Basinger was a member of Hamilton Baptist Church and was a retired pharmacy clerk.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Basinger; daughter, Lynda Basinger Robinson; parents Joe and Eva Jones; and brother, Charles G. Jones.
She is survived by her loving and faithful children son, Tommy (Anita) A. Basinger; two daughters, Bonita Basinger (Jimmy) Bryan and Janet Basinger (Eddie) Byrd; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and good friends and caregivers Lucille Davis and Karen Hutchins; two brothers, J.M. Jones and Ralph Jones, of Ringgold, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at the North Chapel with the Rev. John Wheeler officiating.
Interment will follow at Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Jarmin Martin Besaw, 29, of Ooltewah, passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Paula Jane Johnson Besaw; son, Stephen Besaw; mother, Sharon Besaw; sister, Adina Pendergrass; and a whole host of extended family and friends.

Joanne Deimlang Bishop, 70, of Chattanooga and formerly of Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at her home surrounded by family and friends.
A celebration of her life will take place at 6 p.m. today, Feb. 3, 2010, in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with Father Charles officiating.

Naomi Louise Brooks, 89, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at her residence.

Geraldine Candler, 78, of Chattanooga, wife of the late Jack M. Candler Sr., passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010.

Vernon Sidney Cockrell, 56, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at his home.

Samuel DeWitt
Samuel Edward DeWitt, 66, of Chattanooga, passed away Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.
He was born to the late Samuel E. DeWitt and Dorothy DeWitt on Oct. 3, 1943.
He is survived by his family, including his daughter, Natalie DeWitt Smith, of Buford, Ga.; stepdaughter, Terra Francella, of Fort Oglethorpe; stepson, Terry Vandergriff, of Hixson; brothers, Terrance "Terry" DeWitt, of Ringgold, Ga., and William "Bill" DeWitt. of Orlando, Fla.; and sisters, Dotti Southerland, of Dalton, Ga., and Janice "Jan" Hicks, of Clemmons, N.C.
Sam was a member of The Crossing Church. He worked many years as a plumber and was a longtime fan of the Georgia Bulldogs.

Carrey Garrett Jr.
Carrey Leon 'Simon' Garrett, Jr., 37, of Dayton, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, from his earthly home.
He was a member of Gamble Road Baptist Church.
He preceded in death by his father, Carrey L. Garrett Sr. known as "Turtle."
He is survived by his wife of almost 19 years, Debra 'Bear' Garrett; one son, Carrey L. "Peanut" Garrett III; mother, Judy Garrett; grandparents, Bud and Jessie Ann Harden; sister, Tammy Ives; three nieces; and five nephews.

Emmett Hart
L. Emmett Hart, 90, of East Ridge, passed away Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.
Mr. Hart was born in St. Louis, Mo., to Arthur and Mary Jane Hart. He was a member of East Ridge United Methodist Church where he belonged to the Joy Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of Chattanooga City High School and a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II. Mr. Hart retired as a mechanic's manager for Lockheed Martin, and was a member of Hill City Lodge F&AM 603, Scottish Rite, Alhambra Temple and Tin Lizzie.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Carrie Marie Hart.
Survivors include his sisters-in-law, Agnes Hart and Hilda Eidson, and several nieces and nephews.

Louise Holder
M. Louise Holder, 92, of Ooltewah, went to be with the angels Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.
A lifelong resident of Ooltewah, she was a member of Ooltewah Baptist Church and the Maggie Watts Sunday School Class and was a retired sales lady from retail sales after many years. She was the daughter of the late, Jewell and Mary Cannon Carson and the wife of the late William E. Holder.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Evelyn Hughes, and her brother, Frank Carson.
Survivors include her son and his wife, Ned and Betty Holder, Georgetown Tenn.; two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Raymond Baker, Ooltewah, and Rosemary and Mickey Arp, Georgetown, Tenn.; two grandchildren, Michael (Tiffany) Arp and Michelle Arp; and three great-grandchildren.

Timothy Arthur Lewis, 46, Harrison, died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, in a local hospital.
He was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area and was of the Christian faith. Mr. Lewis was a sales manager at Big Lots in Hixson and enjoyed fishing in his spare time, and being a dad and granddad.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Lewis.
Survivors are son, Hunter Lewis, Ringgold; daughters, Alex Lewis and Whitney Lewis, both of Ringgold; mother, Carolyn Keck Lewis, Harrison; grandmother, Irene Keck, Ringgold, Ga.; brother, Jeff (Stacey) Lewis, Flintstone, Ga.; dearly loved grandchildren, Ronny and Ryan Lewis; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dorothy Reynolds Long, 87, of Chattanooga, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, in a local hospital.
Mrs. Long was retired from 3M Co. and GE Co. in 1987. She was a member of Tiftonia Church of Christ and she was the second oldest living member. She was a loving wife, mother and devoted sister.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Alice Reynolds; sisters, Rebecca Bledsoe, Sallie Loveday, May Clark, Lula Beene, Corrine Housley, Margaret Huckabee and Virginia Ruth Reynolds; brothers, James Reynolds and Claude Reynolds Jr.; and husband of 51 years, James D. Long.
She is survived by her daughter, Alice Dianne Long, Chattanooga; sister-in-law, Louise Hulvey; several nieces and nephews; and devoted neighbors, the Delaney family and the Tippett family.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m.Thursday at Tiftonia Church of Christ with Minister Edgar C. Beard, Minister Jeff Brown and Minister Jack James officiating.

Carolyn Luetgens
Carolyn Marie Luetgens, 65, of Whitwell, Tenn., passed away Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, in a local hospital.
She was born Feb. 4, 1944, in Chattanooga. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in South Pittsburg, Tenn. Prior to moving to Whitwell, Carolyn was a member of St. Stephen Catholic Church where she taught CCD with Frances Newell. She was a member of St. Stephens Women's Club. She was a graduate of Catherine Spalding College in Louisville, Ky., and was employed at T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital and Erlanger hospital as a medical technologist. She was involved in many community activities; she volunteered at Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute and was active in the Compeer Program and the Chattanooga Food Bank. Carolyn was an environmentalist and a spokeswoman for many who had not the words or means to speak on their own behalf. She was an advocate for those who suffered from brain diseases and were often the walking wounded who were ignored.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Catherine and William Luetgens, and a brother, Bill Luetgens.
Survivors include her sister-in-law, Anne Brewer Luetgens, and nephews, Mike and Chris Luetgens.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen Catholic Church with Father Mark Scholtz officiating.
Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Gregory Marbury
Gregory Marbury, 52, quietly went home Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010.
He was of the Baptist faith, and was employed by Array Manufacturing Co. He was a Howard High School graduate, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Preceding him in death were parents, Ellious and Bessie Marbury; grandparents, Charlie and Vera Mennifee; and brothers, Leroy Robinson, Ellious Jr., William and Milton Marbury and Earl Hasley.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Juanita Marbury; children, Sharnell L. Kelly, Kiechia Marbury and Scott Douglas; sisters, Annie Robinson, Juanita and Connie Marbury and Cynthia Hasley; and brother, Thomas Hasley.
Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, in the funeral home chapel.

Ronnie Shumate Jr.
Ronald "Ronnie" Earl Shumate Jr., 48, of Hixson, passed away suddenly Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.
Ronnie was born in Rockwood, Tenn., and attended schools in Hixson and Red Bank. He was a 1980 graduate of Red Bank High School. Ronnie was a talented athlete in basketball and football from YMCA all thru his high school years where he was named Honorable Mention All State in football his senior year. He continued his football in college at Marion Military Institute and Southeast Missouri State University. Ronnie was an outstanding quarterback on the SEMO team, holding the distinction of being 12th in the Nation in Offensive Performances for Division II Schools. Ronnie was a truck driver by profession and was an avid fisherman. He was a member of the Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Frances Hickey, of Rockwood, and Earl and Thelma Shumate, of Portsmouth, Ohio.
Ronnie is survived by his daughter, Kaitlin Shumate; and his ex-wife, Cynthia Luttrell, both of Jackson, Mo.; mother, Margaret "Micki" Hickey Shumate, of Hixson; father and stepmother, Ron and Peggy Shumate, of Soddy-Daisy; sisters, Laura Coulston and husband, Jeff, of Scottsboro, Ala., and Lisa Christopher, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; uncle, Paul Hickey, of North Hollywood, Calif., and an aunt, Suzanne Williams and husband, Mike, of Portsmouth, Ohio; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Janet Smith
Janet C. Smith, 80, longtime resident of Signal Mountain, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at Erlanger hospital.
She was born in Seattle, graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in language arts and spoke five languages fluently. After college, she entered the foreign service of the United States Department of State serving in Paris and Rio de Janeiro. While stationed in Brazil, she married James T. Smith Jr., of Columbus, Ga., who was employed by Dupont do Brazil.
Jim and Janet moved to Signal Mountain, in 1962 where she was an active member of the Chattanooga and Signal Mountain communities. She served as president of the Signal Mountain Woman's Guild and was a committed and longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the Morgan Sunday School Class. She enjoyed traveling extensively, playing bridge, and volunteering in the community. She was involved in the Children's International Summer Village Program leading tours to France, Portugal, Italy and Mexico. She was a member of the National Kidney Foundation and locally was known for giving support and encouragement to new patients on dialysis.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Aspasio and Eletta Cecchi.
She is survived by her husband with whom she was married for 53 years, James T. Smith Jr., of Signal Mountain, and their two sons, James T. Smith III (Denise), of Mobile, Ala., and Jeffrey R. Smith (Bridget); and two grandsons, Jeffrey and Stephen, of Auburn, Ala. She also is survived by her sister, Adrienne Romano (James J.), and nephew, James P. Romano, of Hixson, and her nephew, Admiral Steven Romano (Deborah), of Arlington, Va.; and her sister-in-law, Betty Lott, (Robert), of Tuscaloosa, Ala., and their four children, Robert Lott (Leslie), of Huntsville, Ala., James Lott, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Margaret Schroeder (Carl) of Olympia, Wash., and Mary Chedid, of Tampa, Fla. In addition, she is survived by her sister-in-law, Lou Johnson, and her daughters, Karen Johnson, of Albany, Ga., Fontaine (Shawn) Gervasi and Mary Allen (Andy), of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Carolyn Thickman
Carolyn Shub Thickman, 62, of Harrison, passed away Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, after a valiant struggle against cancer.
She was born in Timmins, Ontario, Canada to Thomas and Rebecca Shub. She moved to Miami, Fla., as a teenager where she met and married Howard. She has been a resident of Harrison for 17 years.
Carol was the beloved wife of Howard Thickman for 43 years. She is remembered with much love by Howard; their son, Jesse and his wife, Kimberly; two grandsons, Jordan and Dylan; her father, Thomas Shub; sisters, Nadine Shub and Sylvia dos Remedios and their husbands, Tom Durbin and Steven dos Remedios; niece, Shaya Shub-Durbin; and countless other family members and friends.
All of those she touched will hear forever her joyous, infectious laughter and see her happy smile.
A memorial service will be at a later date for the family.

James Weller
James F. "Jim" Weller, 67, of Harrison, passed away as the result of complications following surgery on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010.
Jim was a member of the Notre Dame graduate class of 1962 and was an employee of Tennessee Valley Authority, Engineering Division for 37 years.
Although he was never a pilot, Jim was an avid enthusiast of aeronautics and spent countless hours attending air shows and airline memorabilia conventions throughout the United States. His favorite being the Oshkosh air show in Wisconsin. He maintained an extensive and detailed collection of die cast model planes complete with specific details and he held an intensive knowledge of the history and status of current and historic aircrafts.
He and his wife, Dottie, traveled extensively throughout the United States and Jim truly appreciated the wonders of this great country. He was compassionate with individuals as well as a lover of animals and he loved his family deeply.
He was preceded in death by his father, William T. Weller, and mother, Carol P. Weller.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Dottie; son, Anthony; daughter, Lisa; stepson, Jerry Snow; five grandchildren, Shane, Garrett, Jordan, Mark and Matthew; stepgrandson, Brandon Snow, who is a member of the U.S. Coast Guard and will be unable to attend services as he is currently serving as a member of the United States Ceremonial Honor Guard for fallen servicemen and women; brothers, Bill, of Signal Mountain, and Joe, of Knoxville, Don, of Chattanooga, Dan, of Rockwall, Texas; and sister, Carol Ann, of Atlanta.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010, at 3 p.m. in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Morty Lloyd officiating.
Interment will follow in New McDonald Cemetery on Snow Hill Road.

He was a Veteran of World War II.

James Daniel
CEDARTOWN -- James William "Dub" Daniel, 90, passed away Monday, Feb. 1, 2010.
He was born April 2, 1919, in Carrollton, Ga., the son of the late John Wesley Daniel and Marion Florida Samples Daniel. He lso was preceded in death by wife of 63 years, Madeleine "Pid" Bradshaw Daniel; sister, Christine Coker; and great-grandson, John Ray Bowling.
Mr. Daniel was a retired Railroad Engineer with 42 years of service from Southern Railway. He was the first elected president of Polk County Saddle Club, founding member and officer of Lookout Mountain Beagle Club, a member of the American Kennel Club and the American Quarter Horse Association and a past member of the American Walking Horse Association. He was a veteran of the United States National Guard.
Mr. Daniel was a proud member of the Cedartown High School Class of 1937.
Mr. J. W. "Dub" Daniel is survived by children, Patty McDonald Eldridge and Sandy Daniel; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; special friend, Melba Cochran. Also surviving is his cherished, canine companion, "Spike."
The funeral service for Mr. James William "Dub" Daniel will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Olin L. Gammage & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Russell officiating. Mr. Sandy Daniel and Mrs. Rhonda Culp to deliver the eulogy, Mrs. Robbin Bowling will read Scripture, and Dan Wolf of the Quila Indian Tribe will give special remarks.
The committal service will be at Northview Cemetery, Cedartown.
Pallbearers are Gordon Miller, Allen Summerville, Roth Yancey, Brent Yancey, Rick Dempsey, Glenn Sorrells, Chan McDonald and Todd Daniel.

Charles Whitener Sr.
DALTON -- Charles George Whitener Sr., died Monday, Feb. 1, 2010, at his home at the age of 81 after a long battle with cancer.
Charles was born in Cherry Log, Ga., on Jan. 7, 1929, son of Stella and Clifford Whitener. He grew up in Rome, Ga., and was a graduate of Gordon Military Academy, and attended the University of Georgia, The University of Maryland, and Georgia State University. He married Maebelle Berry Whitener on Dec. 24, 1950.
From 1948 until 1950 he served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, and from 1950 through 1953 he served in the U.S. Air Force at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C. After completing his Military duty, he joined the General Electric Company in Rome and served as an industrial engineer. In 1960 Charles moved his family to Abbeville, S.C. where he worked in management for the Deering-Milliken Co. In 1963 he returned to Rome and spent three years in sales for Rome Machine and Foundry. In 1966 he moved his family to Dalton, Ga., and took a position in sales with Norville Industries. After leaving Norville Industries in 1968, Charles launched a career as a successful entrepreneur. He owned and operated several yarn manufacturing and processing firms in the Dalton area including Tesco Inc and Yarn Set Inc.
Charles served on the Dalton City Council for eight years and past chairman of the Dalton chapter of the Salvation Army. He was also an elder in his church, First Presbyterian Church of Dalton, Ga.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Whitener; his mother, Stella Whitener; and his wife, Maebelle Whitener.
He is survived by his siblings, J.C. Whitener, Douglas Whitener, Randolph Whitener, and Elizabeth Whitener Simpson.
Charles is survived by his children, Charles George Whitener Jr. and daughter-in-law, Jenny Whitener; Martha Berry Whitener Thomason and son-in-law, Larry Thomason; and Gordon Douglas Whitener and daughter-in-law, Susie Whitener.
He was most proud of and adored by his grandchildren who are Brett Thomason, Chas Thomason, Macy Whitener, James Whitener, John Whitener, Margaret Berry Whitener, Molly Mae Whitener, Charles George Whitener III and Katharine Rose Whitener.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Mickey Shealy and the Rev. Tyler Downing officiating.
Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery.
