Bernice Boaz
Bernice Smith Boaz, of Signal Mountain, passed away Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010.
She was born Constance Bernice Smith on Jan. 5, 1924, to Annie and Charles Walter Smith in Sewanee, Tenn. Bernice was the second to youngest of 12 children. She moved with her family to Chattanooga in the 1930s and graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1942.
Bernice met Raymond Martin Boaz Sr. on a blind date on Dec. 10, 1941, and the couple celebrated that anniversary every year. They were married on Feb. 9, 1945, at Fort Oglethorpe and embarked on a 65-year-long love affair that saw them settle first in East Ridge and then on Signal Mountain in 1959. Bernice was a loving and doting wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who took immense pride in her family. She was an accomplished seamstress who could easily replicate any dress that caught her eye and created numerous Easter, Christmas, Birthday, prom, May Day and party dresses that have been admired and passed down through the family. She was most proud of the hand-stitched christening gown that she created for her first grandchild and that has been worn now by two generations of the Boaz family.
Bernice loved sports, particularly golf, tennis and Tennessee football. For over 50 years she and Ray spent fun weekends in Knoxville with good friends and family attending the games. Their tailgate parties were legendary!
Bernice was also an accomplished cook who without a cookbook or recipe could create amazing family dinners or the most lavish parties. When asked for her recipe for cornbread dressing she remarked "there is no recipe -- it just happens." Her homemade applesauce and sweet potato casserole were favorites of her grandchildren. In fact, her sweet potato casserole has served as birthday cake on many an occasion.
Bernice is survived by her loving husband, Raymond Martin Boaz Sr.; and her four children, Brenda Boaz Kelly and her husband, Tyler; Raymond Martin Boaz Jr. and his wife, Diane; Charles William Boaz; and Constance Boaz Woods and her husband, Joe. Bernice was Mom B to six remarkable grandchildren, Sharon Boaz Deaver; Elizabeth Boaz Burnette and her husband, Chad; Katherine Boaz Santola and her husband, Jason; Robert Charles Boaz; Raymond Martin Boaz III; and Daniel Link Boaz. She was also Mom B to two sweet great-grandchildren, Finley Constance Burnette and Sophia Kate Santola.
Bernice is also survived by five sisters, Abbie Morris, Minnie McCall, Elsie Daffron, Charlotte Ziegler and Corrine Bradakis; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
The family appreciates the great care and support shown to Bernice by Hospice of Chattanooga.

George Painter Sr.
George Painter Sr., 83, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010.
Born and raised in Knoxville, he was a graduate of Knoxville High School and attended the University of Tennessee. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944, where he served as an aviation radioman. As WWII ended, he continued his Naval service in Cuba and the Caribbean.
After military service, George and his bride, Barbara, moved to Chattanooga where he worked 35 years at DuPont Co., retiring in 1985. Many of the following years were spent in devoted community service. He spent over 30 years coaching YMCA Knothole baseball and basketball in the Hillcrest community.
During that same period of time, he served as the Hillcrest/Kings Point Democratic precinct chairman. His commitment to the American electoral system was a point of both pride and passion. He was elected to the Democratic Executive Committee on several occasions where he served on the county and state levels.
However, his greatest interests centered around his Lord, his church and his family. For 40 years he was a faithful member of the East Chattanooga United Methodist Church until it merged with the St. Johns United Methodist Church in 1989.
It was his greatest pleasure to build, repair, replace, roof, tile or paint any need that came his way at the church or in the countless homes of both friend and stranger. It was his ministry and his gift. He used these gifts often in service to children, beyond the years of coaching athletics, at the Bethlehem Community Center.
The "Beth" was a favorite ministry of his, where he used his building skills frequently. He was a longtime member of the Bethlehem board of directors.
As a devoted churchman, he sang for over 60 years in the church choir and he served in a variety of ways on church committees and boards. He was blessed to have had the unique experience of being a member of the same Sunday school class for 62 years.
George was the past worshipful master of the Fidelity Masonic Lodge 558. He was an active member until his declining health prevented participation.
To his family, he was an entirely loyal and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His devotion to family was limitless and his presence will be painfully missed, but his ethics, convictions, and love will live on through those of us who loved him most.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Darthula and H.D. Painter; his sister, Wanda Worstell; and brothers Kenneth and Charles Painter.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Lane Painter; son, Wes (Emily) Painter, of Chattanooga; daughter, Julia (James) Morrison, of Ooltewah; grandchildren, Laura (Scott) Kirk, of Chattanooga, Kristin (Lindsey) Saxon, of Augusta, Ga., Rachel (Nathan) Hodges, of Knoxville, Tenn., and Jordan (Jennifer) Morrison, of Johnson City, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Colin McCracken and John William Kirk, Brenna, Connor and Ethan Saxon, Brianna Hodges; and sister, Norma (J.W.) Roberts.
The family is so very grateful for the loving care provided by Hospice of Chattanooga, particularly longtime family friend, Annice Morgan, R.N. Words cannot express the appreciation for the loving ministry and support provided by the pastoral staff and the faithful members of St. Johns United Methodist Church.
A service of celebration will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 8, at St. Johns United Methodist Church, 3921 Murray Hills Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416.
The family will receive friends an hour prior to this service.
A burial service will be held at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010.
Active pallbearers will be Bill Kennedy, David Kennedy, Rob Kennedy and Bryan Daniels; grandsons, Jordan Morrison, Scott Kirk, Lindsey Saxon, Nathan Hodges.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the choir at St. John's United Methodist Church and his Sunday school class.
Memorial contributions may be made to the music department of St. Johns United Methodist Church; Hospice of Chattanooga, 4411 Oakwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416; The Bethlehem Center, 200 W. 38th St., Chattanooga, TN 37410; or to a favorite charity of your choice.

Jan Speed
GRAYSON -- Jan Speed, wife of James Wallace Speed and mother of Kimberly Jan Speed Atkins, also of Grayson, passed out of this life on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, after a two-year battle with ovarian cancer.
She is survived by her husband, daughter and a brother, Jack Wayne Reeves, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Also surviving her are two grandchildren, Kameron Samuel Atkins and Alaska Jan Atkins, also of Grayson.
Ms. Speed, a native of Chattanooga, and the daughter of the late Elizabeth and Andrew Jackson Reeves of Brainerd was a 1963 graduate of Brainerd High School and a 1967 graduate of the Peabody College for Teachers (now Vanderbilt University), and she later obtained a Master's Degree from West Georgia University in Special Education. While in college she was the Youth Director at the East Lake Methodist Church in Chattanooga, and she was a member of the Brainerd Methodist Church where she and then Capt. Speed of the U.S. Army, also a native of Chattanooga, were married in 1969. After settling in Atlanta, where Mr. Speed entered Emory University Law School, she was a special education teacher of multiple-handicapped children, serving in public school systems in the Atlanta area and later as the director of childhood education at the Peachtree-Parkwood Mental Health Hospital in Atlanta.
Ms. Speed devoted her post-professional life to her grandchildren, her pet dogs, golf (a 10 handicap) and to her creative instincts, which included music, art, interior design, her koi ponds and gardening. She designed, invented and patented a self-watering tomato cage for home gardeners. Her gardens and her koi ponds were well known in the Atlanta area and were the subject of home tours and articles in newspapers and magazines. Jan possessed a most patient and kind soul and was the most gracious person to all those who knew her. She touched so many lives in such special ways and will be greatly missed by all those who knew, and therefore loved her.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, at Tom M. Wages Snellville Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society. A team has been established to participate in the American Cancer Society's upcoming Relay for Life in memory of Jan.
