Each year, teens look forward to their annual prom. For some, the fun begins long before the first dance when they start browsing stores, magazines and Web sites for the perfect attire.
According to David's Bridal dress consultant Laura Weems, prom trends have slimmed down in the last few years.
"They used to be very poofy and fluffy, and now they're more fitted and streamlined," she said.
Many teens are looking to Hollywood for their inspiration, said Emily Goodin, owner of Boutique Couture on Market Street.
"Prom gowns are going more red carpet," Ms. Goodin said. "Girls see these gorgeous styles worn by celebrities, and they want to mimic them."
According to Goodin, some of today's most popular dresses include flowing, high-waisted, Grecian styles, mixed floral and animal prints in unique colors, and one-shoulder gowns in bright, solid colors.
Leaving more to the imagination is another developing trend, Goodin said.
"There are less cutouts," she said. "Less skin showing is in."
Another trend emerging this year is gowns with necklace necklines. These necklines look like a large necklace but are actually a part of the dress.
"I've already started picking out dresses I like," said Signal Mountain High School junior Katelyn Handley. "I've been looking forward to prom all year long."
But dresses aren't the only form of prom attire that has changed over the years. Traditional prom tuxedos have come a long way, too.
While many still prefer the look of the traditional black and white tuxedo, other teens said they'll opt to coordinate the vest and tie with their date's dress color.
Another recent trend in male prom fashion is to wear a dark shirt and jacket, accented with a vibrant vest and tie.
Baylor School senior Brandon Eaves said the classic look is where it's at.
"I plan on wearing a classic black-and-white tux with a bow tie," he said, adding that he intends to choose his outfit "as late as possible."
Over the years, prom styles and traditions may change, but one aspect of prom will continue to remain the same; students continue to anticipate spending a night of fun and excitement with their friends.
"I look forward to prom this year," said Mike Jones, a senior at Chattanooga School for the Arts and Sciences. "It's my senior year and, besides senior trip, it's kind of like your last big event with your whole class.
"It's a time to get together with old friends and new and just have a good time."
