North Jackson’s Richard wins award

North Jackson quarterback Will Richard has been named one of 50 recipients of the Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year Award. The 50 national winners will each receive a congratulatory plaque.

The purpose of the Red Zone Player of the Year award, according to the release announcing the honorees, is to motivate, inspire and recognize varsity high school football players who show outstanding athletic performance, strong leadership, and the will to win in the red zone — the area of the football field between the 20-yard line and the goal line.

Last season Richard rewrote nearly every one of the Chiefs’ single-game, season and career passing record.

He completed 194 of 305 passes for 3,056 yards and 37 touchdowns, which were all school records. He ended his career at the Stevenson, Ala., school with 316 completions in 482 attempts for 4,467 yards and 52 touchdowns, which also are North Jackson records.

Miles gets Robinson

Central High School linebacker and running back Jonathan Robinson signed with Miles College on Monday. Robinson had been recruited by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Carson-Newman and Tennessee Tech.

The 6-foot-1, 220-pound Robinson, a four-year starter, has not yet qualified academically but plans to retake the ACT later this month and could redshirt his first season at the Birmingham school.

Despite missing two games with a broken hand and playing the final four regular-season games with a cast, Robinson helped the Purple Pounders earn a Class 4A playoff berth with 80 tackles and a team-high 520 rushing yards.

“They’re getting a steal because he’s a very high-caliber player,” Central coach David Barger said. “He’s one of the best I’ve ever coached and was real impressive at the Tennessee-Kentucky all-star game. He’ll work hard every play and will challenge for playing time early on.
